Yes

You'd know what the fuck you're talking about.

Yes
Warp wrote:
Could this be applied to other rules as well? Do, for example, using GameGenie codes become a valid form of TASing if the run looks cool enough?
No, the game must stand on it's own without outside influence, just the code that exists on the cartridge. This debug menu exists on the cartridge. And cheat codes are used in runs on this site. Most of them go directly to the concept demos and such.
Warp wrote:
I commented that in my opinion if the debug menu can be used for entering cheat codes in the same way as you can do with a cheating device such as GameGenie, it would make the technique invalid and against the rules.
You're wrong.
Warp wrote:
Could you please define what makes the Konami code a cheat, while such a debug menu (which I assume allows you to do similar things to a GameGenie device) isn't a cheat? Does the definition of "cheat" involve how difficult it is to access the code? If the code is hard to access, then it's not a cheat, but if it's trivial to access, then it is. Where do you draw the line?
Yes Why do you want to draw a line? This site is about entertainment...stop being a douche.
Warp wrote:
As I suggested earlier, would the Konami code stop being a cheat if it was more difficult to access? If yes, could you please explain why? I just can't grasp the logic.
Yes, unless you want to also remove all ability to do anything that wasn't intended by the programmers. You could eliminate all OOB glitches and all memory glitches and all wall glitches. As you seem to like to say "Where do you draw the line?!"
Warp wrote:
Personally I'm not very fond of runs that use save data corruption, for reasons I have explained in other threads. I view them as borderline hardware cheating.
Good for you, fortunately not everyone shares your opinion.
Warp wrote:
So your stance is, indeed, that if the cheat code is difficult to access, it becomes acceptable?
There's a pretty large difference between a cheat code and a glitch. If you don't want to make that distinction, that's your problem. Lastly, good job guys, voted yes. Was totally fuzzy pickles!

They link to patches to games and might bring the wrath of the big companies to sue the site!!! Oh also, this link has been on the site since 2006 http://tasvideos.org/901S.html Hope they don't find that one too. p.s. you can't get in trouble for distributing roms if you aren't distributing roms! That'd be as if someone asked you if you knew where to buy some heroine and you got arrested for pointing out the guy on the street corner.

Did some thorough testing and I will for sure not need the poundbrella for the entirety of this TAS. PeachtotheInfinity's chain chomp glitch does seem to be usable on only one level in world 7, and I was able to get peach's speed as high as 1336 (512 normal run speed). It's a pretty sweet lookin glitch I have to admit. Zeldara109, I can't say for certain, but it doesn't seem like carrying the ball has any affect on getting 777 or not. I'm currently done with 2-5 (actually gonna head back to 2-4 to fix up a minor error, maybe gain like 4 frames. But I'm currently dealing with the stylus portion of the boss. It's not giving me problems...I just don't want to do it =P

Well mostly my point about it being the wrong game i just because it's extremely obscure and most people will never have heard of the game. RPG TASes tend to stand on their own 95% because of audience familiarity. I do not doubt at all that you put in a lot of work and did a wonderful job. That I can see from the run. But the entertainment aspect of the run, partly because of the obscurity, and partly because of the 5 minutes of watching you level up, is brought down dramatically. If I was rating the run, I'd probably vote T-8 and E-2. But I'm just one person, if you get this run published, I'll say congratulations all day. It's nothing personal, more or less just a comment about how easily people click the yes button instead of truly considering the options nowadays. Good luck neo_omegon =) On the other hand, if the run was FF4 or illusion of gaia, or secret of evermore (obviously my own personal tastes) on the (J) rom and there was this quality of subtitles. That would get the yes vote in about 6 seconds. The reason it would take so long is cause my head would explode and take my body 6 seconds to fall on the yes button!

As much as I liked the subtitles, I believe it's my duty to mention that subtitles or not, the movie should stand on it's own. I think neo_omegon did a wonderful job on them, but most of the yes votes I've seen here are "yes vote because of the subtitles". It doesn't seem to me that simply because there are subtitles that this movie is therefore publishable. It's novel and innovative, but I still think it's just the wrong game to have them. I feel as though the run should be able to stand up on it's own, and not be held up by duct tape (the subtitles).

Voting no for replacing the (U) version as both the author and andrewg have stated that this is suboptimal. There shouldn't be a replacement of an old run unless the new run is of the same quality or better as the previous run. Published alongside? This is also an iffy proposition. It wasn't done with Super Metroid and I believe that set the precedent for this case. So in that case I am leaning towards no as well. Last option is to put a link in the description, and this of course has precedent for being done and doesn't harm anyone or anything. So I won't vote directly "yes, no, meh" because I don't think those describe how I feel on this one. But I will place my vote in text that I think this should be given recognition as it is faster, however it isn't yet of the same quality as what is on the site. On a side note: I don't have a problem with people using (E) or (J) roms for a run if it's faster than the currently published run. But it is obvious that a (J) rom will cause a drop in entertainment for some people and will also come into consideration during the voting process. If the (E) and (U) roms were sufficiently different enough, then publishing alongside would not be an issue either. Hope my 2 cents are worth 2 cents.

I mean this with the utmost respect, this run was incredibly boring. The subtitles were extremely nice though. Almost made me want to vote yes on the run just because of that. I've never played the game, but I'm sure you've done a fantastic job with the run. However I feel that the game is not suitable for a TAS. Almost the entire run was walking and no boss battles or anything. The glitch battle was novel at first, but it just dragged on and on. I'm sure it was necessary, but it was awful to watch. I'm sorry to say I only watched the first 25min as it's all I could handle, I would normally try to finish watching the entire thing, but I can't handle another 35min. Vote: No Last thing though, NOOOOOOO Tam died! =( R.I.P. Tam

Voting no for the following reasons: Run doesn't complete the game Game doesn't complete the game Not very optimized Hack isn't very good or interesting Run isn't entertaining Since this is bound for gruefood and will never be seen again, I would like to say Ponk Berry

Dragon Crystal please. Game produces a random map each time you go up a level. Can't remember how many levels there are, but I would imagine this is the kind of game for someone who wants to do some disassembly and have fun with the luck manipulation (not my cup o tea). Also it's for the gamegear, but this is the SMS/GG thread and I didn't see a GG wishlist)

False. Hacks are acceptable; they are just judged alongside the rest of the submission.

Well, all done with world 1. It's 697 frames faster than Waddles WIP. Which I must thank Waddle again for his WIP, it was very informative and taught me a couple minor tricks to save a couple frames here and there. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1438518337/SPP.dsm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxZLlpnYrh0 1-3 was redone thanks to having to rebuy before, I changed from getting the Poundbrella to just getting a vibe tea. The vibe tea cost 287 frames to buy, but will most certainly save frames as the run progresses. It saved about 30 frames on the boss from not having to enter into cry mode an extra time. edit: oops on the first 15 seconds or so in the shop lol, my bad =D

Here's my first installment of the run. Halfway done with world 1. Bought all three umbrella abilities in one go. This is 191 frames faster than Waddles WIP except that I bought the chargebrella so it's only 51 frames faster. But I have a few places in mind where the chargebrella will save quite a few frames. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1622215484/SPP.dsm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v77dsWgW32Q Unfortunately most of the strategy is identical to Waddles with a couple of exceptions because, well, he did a good job. I'm mostly just coming in and optimizing it. I'll be trying to post wips every 3rd level or so. Enjoy Edit: I suppose I posted a bit prematurely. I have had to go back and change the items I bought. Rather than buying the Poundbrella (which I've deemed useless and won't be needed in the run) I've bought my first Vibe Tea. I'm hoping this one upgrade will allow me to hold off on having to go back to the shop for a while, if it can, then it should save 280 frames, if it doesn't then no harm done, woulda bought it anyway. Anyhow, this has set me back on frames simply because it forces an animation, so pre buying I was 100 frames ahead, after buying 187 frames behind. After 1-3 96 frames behind, and I'm currently on the last room of 1-4 and I'm 98 frames ahead of Waddle's WIP (with a vibe tea and a chargebrella, which will save time later had Waddle continued his) (though I'm not sure he has stopped or not).

That's very much appreciated WaddleDX. And this is more optimized than I thought it was. My current 1-1 WIP is actually only 36 frames faster, with a few frames lost to manipulating the bonus 777 coins. Thank you very much for the WIP, it will be a good checkpoint. Will post a WIP maybe every half a world or something...not sure.

Most of what Peachtotheinfinity said is true. The part that isn't (and I was wrong, not him), is that there isn't less lag or anything like that on the (U) version. The lag was emulation error. I've done a room by room comparison on 1-1 doing the exact same things and the differences became apparent. For one, the "You saved a Toad" message is 7 frames shorter in the (J) rom. Which is negligible. The other difference is that it appears to be that on occasion the screen transition is 1 frame faster on the (U) rom. Other than that, everything else appears to be equal. Not enough of a reason to use the (J) rom for 7 frames per toad, which would roughly equal 14 seconds. Over an hour long TAS, 14 seconds is pretty insignificant. On a side note, I don't have WaddleDX's dsm, but comparing side by side as best I could (pressing play at the same time), my WIP is about a second or more faster through 1-1. What would be extremely helpful though, would be if someone could figure out what determines if the star gives 50 coins or if it gives 777. I sat in front of the RAM Search for about an hour and had 0 results. I figure it may be a formula of some kind, but I'm not experienced at all with disassembling.

voting no. Poor game choice. I don't think there's any way to make this game entertaining for a viewer. It's entire entertainment value comes from playing the game.

I have an old WIP of this game, I've been thinking about finishing it, but I have several other projects I want to finish first. I'm glad someone else picked it up, this game is fun, but a bit tedious to TAS. Anyway, it's possible to skip the text before jumping on the skate board, saving a lot of time. My level 1 is 236 frames faster than yours, mostly (perhaps solely, I haven't compared the rest) because of this. I'm kind of in a hurry right now, so I'll just upload my WIP here without any detailed comparison. Hopefully it will help out.
Yea, I can't tell you how many ways I tried doing that. I knew there had to be some way to skip that damn text. Well, if someone wants to redo the game and save that, I know it'll probably help with some of the crappy randomness I had on level 2 (couldn't get the right manipulations in a decent amount of time). But personally, I abhor this game after TASing it. This is honestly the most frustrating game to TAS I've ever done. I've dubbed it, the anti-TAS.
