It is not. I tried all sorts of different things to avoid as many random battles throughout the run as I could (one of which is noted in the response to Bisqwit's question).

In the weapon shop I take an unnecassary step to the left. This adds 1 step to my step counter (not 2 because the spots in front of the bar don't count towards the counter). The reason this is necassary is because I was getting rid of an encounter that I otherwise would have to run away from.
Otherwise the very first step taken in the cave would be a random encounter.
The same idea was employed after the dark elf in the castle to avoid one random encounter in ther tower of zot.

That's an incredibly wrong answer though, sorry to say. Even Deign's own real-life speedrun didn't abuse pausing, so the TAS pausing would only further distort any in-game timer comparisons. It's pretty simple, he paused a lot just to have a smaller time displayed at the end. Why? Because it looks cool, why not?

It's just personal preference and real time is what matters, so it's not required. However, the person beating it would maybe try to get the game timer lower for the challenge of it. So of course "should" is really a judgment call of the person doing the TAS.
Also that the pausing saved an unknown amount of frames throughout the run. I'd ball park it in the 5min range (Probably a severe underestimate). Thanks to pausing, the bosses attack less, and Rosa's walls last longer. The pausing allows me to manipulate the damage more precisely than could be possible by waiting for a specific frame to select attack (not to mention that this would also add extra attacks from the boss).

But why 2 steps, I tried a SaveState from the movie and it is possible with only 1 step to the right and back again. So you walked 2 steps more. 1 to the right to far and 1 to the left back to far.
Is there a reason for that?
Had nothing to do with avoiding the old woman, walking on the red carpet doesn't advance the step counter. In all actuality it's possible to just manipulate her off the path very easily. I take 3 steps on the concrete tiles to avoid a battle inside the Tower of Zot. 2 extra steps ~= 32 frames, rather than an extra fight @ about 300 frames =). The same thing is done inside of Cave Eblan in the Weapon shop.
There's another error that I found later in the run that I thought was hilarious. After defeating the CPU the first thing that comes up is "Kain: We did it!" even though Kain is not in the party yet, nor has he shown up to reveal that he is even inside the Giant. Seems the programmers pre-maturely replaced FuSoYa.

I'm going to quash the argument that the Japanese version is harder right now. To the average player, yes, it is harder. However, to the knowledgable player, it is significantly easier. It trivializes the first 2 hours of the game with the extra items and extra abilities. For this reason, and because the majority of people that come to this site are more familiar with the american version, I chose the US version.
I could have sworn it was possible to speed up the white-text-on-blue-background you get twice in Mysidia (the "one to be born..." text) by pushing one of the controller buttons repeatedly.
I tried a few things, nothing advanced it any faster.
I'm wondering if a run of FFIV Advance would be any different.
It would be a completely different TAS. Not only would it be much more like the japanese version (due to the addition of all the missing items and abilities), but it would also be longer than either of the US or Japanese versions. I found that the RNG was a lot less flexible than the SNES versions. Another thing about the GBA version is that it does not have any of the 4 good glitches (that i'm aware of). Just being required to do the sealed cave would add a good 20 minutes or so.

edit: in response to the pink puffs, they are in fact not on path. They are in a very small room that is a little ways off path.

Near Future -> Getting a degree in economics/business.
Distant Future -> Eventually go back to school (mostly for interest rather than a new profession) and get a degree, possibly a PhD in physics (yet to decide what field of physics).

Waiting for some proof, because I just checked again and Shinryuu made sure to hit the clone on the first possible frame every time and there is but 1 unavoidable lag frame. So please, provide proof.
Edit: checked again, and the 1 unavoidable lag frame was only one that showed up in memory, but did not actually cause lag. So there is at no point a lag frame in the entire fight. The invicibility timer still goes down on that frame.

I know I'm not Fabian, but hopefully I can help you out with this one.
My advise for you in such a troubling situation would be to first and foremost, if you care about what your parents think of you so much as you seem to, sit down and have a discussion with them. Tell them your situation, financially and how you're feeling. I remember when I had a similar situation back in 2003/2004. But then I got kicked out of my house cause my father and I were on really bad terms. I ended up joining the Navy and spending 2 years in japan and blah blah blah.
Concerning dropping out of school for a year, this may be a great decision for you. It would be better to not pay for a bunch of classes that would be superfluous for whatever you decide to major in. Rather than thinking you wasted your time this previous year, I would prefer to look at it as a learning experience. You tried it out, and now you've learned that "hey, this isn't for me." Better to find that out now rather than after 4 years and a degree later.
What you can do by dropping out of school for a year, perhaps with a part-time or full-time job (I don't know your situation), is you can take some time for yourself, relax, and in your leisure do some searching. Whether it be introspectively or extrospectively. But as I've said, the first thing I would suggest is having a sit down with your parents and talking to them. If they understand your situation they would probably much more sympathetic and supportive. I hope this was helpful in some way.
