Well, I'm impressed. It's not many games get a purpose-built simulator for a single project. And the snippets of the result I watched were reasonably entertaining (granted that I watched maybe five minutes' total). I even saw the plane dipping into those little cul-de-sacs, like it was playing with death the way TASers often do. That said, I appreciate the concept of the run rather more than I appreciate the results. It's just too long.

Where did you see the physics break? Honestly this game has always impressed me with how non-glitchy it is.

Wow, this is a pretty noticeable improvement over BobWhoops' old run, which itself was already impressive. Great work, all of you, and thanks for your efforts! It occurs to me that perhaps the best way to have a true "all levels" run of this game would be for someone to make a ROM hack where every door in each level was modified to take you to the numerically next level. This would effectively replicate the effect of that Japanese TAS, and might actually be what they did.

Incidentally, this game really does deserve a proper TAS. Anyone looking for a project ought to check it out.

I also like the current avatars, though I also wouldn't be surprised if it's now possible to get better image quality at the same filesize. Does anyone have examples of the original animations that the avatars were generated from?

Okay, this was actually legitimately funny. Nice work, slamo.

Ha, that's pretty nicely broken. "You took so long that *dissolves into gibberish*" I'm curious what flags are necessary to set to achieve the credits. I mean, you clearly aren't beating the final boss, nor even setting any flags that seem to be anywhere near that point in the game; the last input appears to be triggering a cutscene that happens at about the halfway point (Idura kidnapping the baby).

If you're going to do Mega Man, can we also squeeze Mega Man 2 into the same block? Mega Man 1 is completely broken, while Mega Man 2 still plays through the entire game, but still breaks the rules frequently and in outlandish ways (e.g. the glitch to scroll to the "next" screen, but in the wrong direction). As for other suggestions, well, there's always International Super Star Soccer Deluxe. :)

Honestly, the VVVVVV runs were underwhelming for me. The TASes mostly look like optimized skilled speedruns, or else they just skip large portions of the game for difficult-to-comprehend and not-very-broken-looking reasons. Scribblenauts is a fantastic TAS, but it's also very long. I don't know if that's a factor in deciding what gets selected, though -- I mean, AGDQ had multiple hour+ runs, and not always of especially high-profile games.

I get the impression that "real console" runs aren't going to be on display for the core block, at the very least. Let's save dwangoAC a few gray hairs. :) But yeah, the Megaman 1 TAS isn't a bad option.

I'll admit I haven't read most of the discussion in this thread, but I'll drop my two cents in anyway. We should choose the classification that people are most likely to think of when they're looking for the TAS (and, for whatever reason, not using Google). To me that means it should end up in either the DOS or PC categories, probably DOS. I don't think most people would expect Doom to get its own special category. The behind-the-scenes details of how exactly Doom replays are implemented is irrelevant to the viewer. And the categorizations are intended to make the viewer's life easier.

Actually there have been a number of debates about when a run is really "over" and thus when timing should stop. Many runners favor ending a run at the soonest point at which no further input is needed to end the game, which results in things like the Super Demo World example you cited, as well as the Gradius and Magician Lord runs where the player just kind of sits there through the entire final boss because it can't hurt them and eventually times out. Sometimes this makes for a more interesting run (setting things up so that input can end much sooner than it ought to be able to be); sometimes it makes for boring ones (the Magician Lord run was replaced with one that actually killed the final boss, largely because it took ages for the boss to time out). The most common other interpretation for when the run is completed is the point at which no further input can prevent the run from finishing (short of resetting or the like).

Personally I would not trust Nintendo's website, or even Nintendo's lawyers on this particular topic. They have a vested interest in making people think that ROMs are illegal. I'm not saying they're wrong, as I lack the legal knowledge one way or another; I'm just saying that I'd rather see a legal opinion from someone who isn't working for a major videogame company.

So for the sake of argument, how does this compare to, say, an all-cups run of Super Mario Kart vs. a run that only completes one cup?

So is this just unmorphing while killing the enemy you're on with bombs? Maybe the game tries to figure out what you're standing on and dereferences a dead enemy, getting zeros for your height?

Incidentally, this kind of thing is one reason (among many, many others) why you should support greater restrictions on copyright terms. The original USA terms were 14 years from creation, with the option to renew once for another 14 years -- that would mean that any games from 2001 or 1987, depending on renewal, would be in the public domain and you could do whatever you wanted with them.

Thanks for the encode, Samsara! And thanks for the TAS, TheAxeMan. It was quite interesting, as were the subtitles. I didn't see any obvious inefficiencies. :) How feasible would a TAS of the PC version be? How would it compare to the NES version?

Re: slowing down, wouldn't it be better to space out your nitro boosts? Your speed gradually decreases after each boost (assuming the speed indicator is accurate), so you should get a higher average speed if you use a boost, let it return you to normal speed, then use the next boost. Instead you seem to be chaining boosts to stay at max speed continuously, which means you only get one deceleration period.

This is what I was talking about earlier, with having the time calculation the site does ignore any empty input in the input file. Heck, we should be doing that for any input movie. Null input that immediately precedes the end of the file is effectively pointless except in weird edge cases like this one.

They aren't Ultima games, but you might be interested in checking out the output of Spiderweb Software, in particular their Avernum series. Assuming you haven't already heard of them. Exile 3 in particular is a fantastic old-school CRPG.
