When I played SMW as a kid, the display I used was an old monitor we used to have connected to a C64k. I remember being amazed at the improvement in the music when I finally figured out how to get both sound channels to play.

Hmm...the Dragon Coin glitch is great for the any% run, but I'm not so certain seeing it used heavily in the 100% run will be as entertaining as seeing the levels get completed normally. I guess we'll have to wait and see the final product.

Yay! Another Icy video! I think my favorite bit was at around 4 minutes: *look up* *Wire shot* *DOO DOO DOO DOO DOO" *beeeep* It's a shame that the TASes don't pick up Wire. It'd be great for added entertainment during that section. Thanks for the video!

What happens if you use Wire the instant you get Wire/Balloon? Or is that not possible?

Controllers would work, though we'd run into a problem once PS2 emulation matures. :) Also saves people from thinking "Oh, he has a Samus icon; that must mean he got the Best Super Metroid TASer award this year." (or, more likely, "Dammit, I'm getting associated with Super Metroid even though I hate the game, just because I got Best SNES TASer this year"). Eh, maybe I'm being paranoid.

Here's my thoughts on representative characters for some of the systems. This is just off the top of my head; there's almost certainly better choices for some. My goal was to avoid repetition while picking standout characters that would be recognizable. NES: 8-bit Mario Genesis: Sonic SNES: Samus N64: An ocarina Gameboy: Kirby GBA: Zero PSX: Richter Belmont

"CSV" means "Comma-Separated Value", and it just means a standard text file where each line in the file is one row in the sheet, and each cell is separated by a comma. It's possible that Excel defaults to thinking that the tab character is the delimiter instead of the comma (tab is a better delimiter...but "comma" is in the bloody extension!); IIRC if you use the "import file" option you'll be able to set what the delimiter is. EDIT: too slow.

"Hardcore" means "permanent death". So basically these characters are trying to see how far they can run through the game while dodging every attack, with no way to fight back, increase their defense, or heal. This is fairly straightforward for the first few zones, because they're outdoors (meaning lots of room to run around enemies) and there's a road to follow to get to the next zone. Once they go underground, though, things get more cramped and they have no idea where to go. The underground area is a passageway between two zones, but it also has a second level that just has some extra monsters and a treasure chest. The player being followed in that video managed to make it to that second level before dying (it's pretty clear he wouldn't have made it any further at that point). The main complication for this kind of run is that your stamina gets used up when running, and you have to stop moving for a bit and switch to walking for it to start recovering. So you have to decide when to run and when to walk.

Okay, I admit it. The "OH HAI" made me laugh. Nice work!

I think it'd look better if the column were removed. Just make them stand directly on the pedestal. Otherwise, looks good!

That was pretty brilliant. Nice work! I'm amused by how absurd the unicycle looks while you're pulling off those repeated tricks.

Heh. Aile's uncertainty in the dialogue makes a nice contrast to how confident she is in the levels. Nice work. :)

Aktan: er, yeah, different IRC channel, on a different network. I fail at communicating today. ¬.¬

Er, whoops! Clearly at some point I stopped reading your name past the first two syllables. I figured everyone calling you "Aktan" was just using a short form, like people on IRC who call me "Der".

So if I understand correctly: * You chose the mode that has the most gems at the start of the game (i.e. the game board is as full as possible) * You also chose the difficulty level that has the fewest colors of gems, which makes finding matches easier. I dunno...yes, the game is fast, but I didn't find it that interesting. I'd be more entertained by a run that sets up lengthy combos. This is basically "Dig a shaft to the gem that has to be destroyed, sidelining any triplets that you can't uses". All you need to implement that strategy is knowledge of the triplets that are coming up; tool assistance doesn't really apply beyond that. Voting meh; well-executed, but not very interesting. (Thanks for the encodes, Aktanusa and sgrunt!)

Tails has no respect for walls. Lookin' good! As for a glitchless run, it seems like it would be rather...slow. At least we'd be able to see all of Tails' sprite though. ¬.¬

You get a Sol Emerald for each boss you beat as Blaze, and they're needed to unlock the final boss, right? That's why I said that Blaze is required in a 100% run. I don't think we should concern ourselves with ranks; 100% in Sonic games has always meant getting all the emeralds, AFAICT. If I recall correctly, you unlock Blaze as soon as you encounter her in the story when playing as Sonic. I don't think it's more than a couple of worlds in. It's been awhile since I last played though.

As I understand it, Blaze will be required for a 100% run anyway. So basically we get four levels and two boss fights for each zone in the 100% run.

No need to take offense; Zurreco is just saying that he didn't care for the game choice. It's not a comment on your playing skills.

The big thing the no-minibosses run shows off is that it's possible to beat the game by skipping the minibosses. If you've played Metroid before, you probably know about that already; it's one of the best-publicized skips (right up there with the door glitch), and if you haven't, then the movie doesn't make its noteworthiness apparent in watching, since the entirety of the gameplay except for one room is basically identical to normal Metroid TASing. I'm inclined to say that that one room (the bridge room) is not enough to save the no-minibosses run from being "obsoleted" (really unpublished).

Indeed. Our goal on this one was uncompromising highest score, we wanted to show at the beginning what was possible with highest precision, but we'll definitely go for other things on other tracks (while still beating all known records.)
Excellent.
By the way, you have me to thank for this one, since Hala is busy working ahead. Sorry for the last 25 seconds but I thought the Tabletop trick was worth showing in the TAS in part at least (and probably at most) once.
I actually wonder if it'd be better to have one of the trick levels dedicated solely to stationary tricks, for the sheer WTF factor. I do agree that stationary tricks should only be abused in one trick level.

That looked neat. I hope that the other trick levels don't all feature twenty seconds of stationary tricks at the end, though. You might consider having each trick level have a different theme, or something. They're fixed-time anyway, so you should be trying to use that time to be as entertaining as possible (given that you've proven that you can shatter any score records out there).

Well, I watched it, and enjoyed it. I'm not an expert when it comes to Metroid 1, but I didn't see anything that was obviously improvable. Nach: Samus's beam has a hilariously short range. It looks to me like that's about as far away as he could have been while still hitting the door.
