FunnyHair: of course, you'd have to wait for the bombs to go off, and they're very short-range, so almost any time you use bombs when the next room is already loaded, you're wasting time. Depending on how long it takes to unmorph and remorph, it might well always be faster to shoot doors instead of using bombs. I think we can rest assured that whoever TASes Metroid Prime knows the game inside and out. :)

How much of the time difference is due to Japanese text vs. English?

Thanks for the encode, FODA! Mario only pulled down one flag in the entire run! I guess he likes green stars. Nice run! Congratulations, HappyLee.

Thanks for the encode, Alden! Looked like a solid run. With this kind of improvement it's difficult to see the actual changes that made the run faster unless you use frame-advance and look at the inputs and memory. But hey, the small numbers are slightly smaller now, and that's good enough for me. :)

Well, as I said, lighting is tricky. Oftentimes to get a well-illuminated primary subject, you have to have over- or under-exposed background elements, because the scene isn't evenly illuminated. In your case, the sky was a lot brighter than your face (er...that sounded kinda like an insult), so to get a well-lit face, you have to accept an over-exposed sky, or else try to do some compositing or filtering tricks.

I guess it depends on how often you have to stop to kill enemies. For those where you do have to stop, if crouching really does give you a faster firing rate, it seems like you'd want to crouch for most of the shots, then start jumping forward when the enemy is about to die so you're as far right on the screen as possible. Or does having your bullets hit enemies quickly give some other benefit?

Randil: the shot's a bit overexposed in the background, which is why it looks flat. Lighting is tricky. :\

Oh man, I hate those low-health alarms. I hate them much more than I'd hate losing 44 frames each time you do a health tally.

The Final Fantasy marathon was bigger (and also for charity). It was scheduled to last 7 days (168 hours), but this article says that it took them 65 hours to finish 4 games, so I don't know if they finished on time.

That doesn't make the behavior acceptable.

The main technical issue, I believe (not having seen the codebase myself), is not giving the uber-niche movies the same prominence that the regular publications enjoy. There's also a social issue, though, which is figuring out who decides if a niche movie is publishable. I'm not trying to revive the debate, just laying out what I understand the issues to be.

If you're going to work on a TAS of this game, reading through the dozen forum posts here will give you information that you probably won't find anywhere else, and thus will save you time and effort. For example, those save&resets he did were to get better random encounter patterns; they save a lot of time that would otherwise be spent loading the encounter screen and then waiting until you could run away.

Fredrik: because reworking how movies are presented on the website takes a lot of nontrivial work, and the maintainers are doing this strictly as a hobby. I'm sure you could volunteer your own efforts to make an alternate version of the site and get feedback on it; how good of a programmer / web dev are you?

Awesome! I especially liked watching the different ghosts play around during deadtime. The movie sadly just stopped playing with no error in the statue room; I don't know what's up with that. But what I saw was very nice.

To clarify: I haven't actually watched the run yet. I just played a lot of B.O.B. a decade or so ago, and it only has like three tunes, so they got pretty wired into my skull. :) Seeing as it's a significant improvement on an old run, though, it seems like it should be worth publishing even if it could itself be improved.

Wait what? Why was this cancelled? Don't tell me you found a new optimization back in Flashman's level and had to start over. :)

As soon as I saw this run on the workbench, I got the theme to the first level stuck in my head. Dammit, man! :)

I'm not a huge fan of the game, but the subtitles definitely made it much more entertaining. The back-and-forth banter and jokes about DK's Shining predilections were amusing, and explanations for why certain choices were made (e.g. hiding on the ceiling during the falling-platforms stage) were a big help.

I'd say there's a good reason why this video pales in comparison to videos aimed at fighting game afficionados: it's not made for them! It's geared towards entertaining the general audience, which requires a different kind of video. Most people don't have the detailed knowledge of the game engine that's required to appreciate a combo video.

#!/usr/bin/python

import random

numMale = 0
numFemale = 0
for i in xrange(1,100000):
    while True:
        if random.random() < .5:
            numFemale += 1
        else:
            numMale += 1
            break
print numMale,numFemale
Printed "99999 99600" on my first run, and since intuitively the number of female children would go up, so much for intuition. :)

Probability, after having chosen X capsules, that we have each number represented: First pick doesn't matter Second pick must be anything except what you picked first (2x-2 options) Third pick must be anything except what you picked in the first two times (2x-4 options) Et cetera. So you have a 1 in PI(2x-2n) chance. (PI is like Sigma, except it does multiplication instead of addition). If you constrain it to be just one color, then for each pick, you must avoid x capsules, so your odds are: First pick: x in 2x Second pick: x-1 in (2x - 1) Third pick: x-2 in (2x - 2) Et cetera Total is PI((x - n) / (2x - n)) If, every time you pick a capsule from the bowl, the corresponding differently-colored capsule is removed, then your odds of getting every number are 1. Your odds of getting every number in the same color are improved, because you now must simply make a 50% toss for each number that you get the right color. Thus your odds are 1 in 2^(x-1) (first pick's color doesn't matter).
