So KirkQ is saying that he'd like to see a run that was about the game's chronology and major story points. And there's nothing wrong with that. Whether or not that's the run that'll be made is a different matter. Personally I'm ambivalent on the issue, mainly because all the plot cutscenes take so bloody long.

Okay, thanks for answering my questions. It's all clear now. :) I didn't realize that the numbers of hearts you have determines how many subweapons you can have onscreen. That's really the biggest "Huh?" moment in the movie. Well, that and noticing all the sprites that Konami's reused over the years.

In the first stage, you paused to gather some hearts, but then you threw a bunch of axes away after beating the boss. Before jumping into the pit in stage 3 you went a bit further left; what was the reason for that? In the room in stage 4 right after you killed a White Dragon, would it have been possible to damage boost up to the upper area instead of walking the long way around? Death, you're a skeleton! Skeletons don't bleed! Pull it together, man! The cutscene video (in the cutscene right after killing Death) lags badly behind the sound. Is that an encoding issue or one with the emulator? Same goes for the endgame cutscene, though obviously it matters less there. After climbing the first room in the clock tower (right after crossing the collapsing bridge), you did a backflip that got hung up on the wall for a bit. I assume this was still faster than walking? Stylistically, it would have been nice if you'd done something else during waiting periods than just using the key over and over again. I don't think we ever got to see Richter complete a backflip, for example. Otherwise, looked reasonably good. The cutscenes did drag on rather badly, especially since I'd no idea what was being said.

Personally I found the movie rather dull. It's practically the definition of run&jump, with uninspired level design and terrible music. The gameplay seemed decent enough; it's the game I take issue with. Meh.

Thanks for the encode, Alden! Definitely a good run. I was surprised at the death count, then disappointed when Jacoby came back. Still, they didn't revive Catry, the Token Female villain, so I guess that counts as a "real" death. Word of advice: if you're fighting a hero whose method of attack involves jumping on your head, don't throw your spiked helmet at him!

You did a fairly good job of keeping us guessing about how the combos would work out until you placed the last piece that snapped everything together. I think it's a bit of a shame that TASes aiming for fastest time can't pull off the really long, convoluted combos though. Still, this was reasonably entertaining.

The point is that doubt is not proof, and our legal system assumes you are innocent unless proven otherwise. Hanging out with children a lot is circumstantial evidence, no more; certainly not enough to say "Yes, he was a pedophile".

Wow, that looks terrible. Way, way outside my skill range. Damage boosts as part of puzzles? Inexplicable outdoor flame walls? Wind and damage floors while fighting Gohma? Pass, thanks. I recognize the desire to make things harder...but eventually you end up with hacks that nobody who isn't a die-hard fan that's been keeping up with developments in the community can play.

Right below this thread on the forum listing is a thread about Final Burn Alpha. That's what you want. I can't help but think that you could have answered this question for yourself faster than it took for one of us to answer it for you.

It costs, what, a minute at least per emerald collected? And that's just counting the bonus stages, not the time spent collecting rings so that the stages can be accessed. I find it hard to believe that you could make up seven minutes' time in the rest of the levels, considering that many of them last less than 30 seconds as-is.

You have four options for one of your weapon slots: * Polar Star (starting weapon, sucks) * Machinegun (lets you fly, first available replacement) * Snake (necessary for maximum-speed runs through Hell, otherwise dubious) * Spur (last available replacement, chargeable for more dakka) However, they have no bearing on the ending you get. To get to Hell, you have to skip Booster and save Curly; skipping Booster is in fact quite easy if you have the machinegun, and saving Curly doesn't require anything special. As for the missiles, when upgraded they have the best damage output of any weapon, bar none. And given that several of the later bosses have invincibility periods (c.f. Undead Core, Ballos (in ball form when jumping, practically you can't get more than one shot in)), you'll want to be dealing as much damage as possible when they are vulnerable. So I think it's worth grabbing one missile pack so you can upgrade them, then grabbing the megapack in Hell. For Undead Core, you can fire off the 5 missiles you'll have, then reload off all the little enemies. Though, for this hypothetical TAS, it'd be worth comparing the upgrading missiles to the level 2 Sword, which has some pretty fantastic damage potential if you get in the enemy's face.

Aren't there some POWs that only show up if you take a long time against the bosses? In any event, discussion as to what constitutes a 100% should probably be held in the appropriate forum (and thread, if one already exists).

XIF: several gruefooded runs were returned to the workbench on the theory that the site is more accepting now than it was when the runs were initially rejected. This was one of them. MarzoJr: sounds good, except it's JXQ instead of JQX. :)

My approach (in OSX) to this problem is threefold: * Shove about thirty icons onto the dock (which is set to auto-hide, minimum default zoom, maximum zoom near the mouse). * Make use of the "recent items" menu, which is a bit like a subsection of the Windows Start menu except that it's sensibly sorted, has more items, and is in its own submenu. * Have a terminal open all the time. Between the three of those, I hardly ever need to dip into the actual file browser to run applications.

The 2P video kills the boss at 35:32; the movie ends at 39:00 (with about five seconds' worth of "Produced by Treasure" sitting on the screen). Of course, you can sit at the end there as long as you like... Edit: to clarify, by "the movie ends at 39:00", I mean the encoding ends there. The input ends when the boss is killed.

I'm fine with that. The only reasonable icons we could use would be iconic (ahem) symbols from old, well-known videogames. Megaman's as good as any, especially since we're already using Mario on the site header.

We have an existing publication using two players on the hardest difficulty that is nearly six minutes faster than your submission. Why should this one be accepted as well?

Looking good! Personally, I think it's helpful to have the "demo" text displayed, so we know that the TASer doesn't have control at those points. Though I would say that if you're going to have it displayed, it shouldn't flicker like it does at the beginning of the game (unless you need that for luck manipulation?).

The issue with doing SSE 100% is that, IIRC, the last few percent aren't available until after you've beaten the campaign. So you'd go watch the credits and then skip out, get a few characters...and stop the movie. It'd be a much better movie, viewing-wise, if it ended with the credits.

It confuses me that I don't know does Kej want to blow up Zebes with Power-Suit ONLY like after the landing somehow, or does the trick require other items as well.
Given that he mentioned maybe needing the Varia or Gravity Suit, I suspect he's found a special room relatively far from the landing site where it's possible to corrupt memory (and initiate the explosion countdown) without any particularly special equipment. The problem is getting back to the ship without taking so much damage that you die. If he were going into Tourian to get to the room behind Mother Brain, then getting back to the ship wouldn't be a problem, I don't think; everything in the way is vulnerable to any shot (including the ninja pirates at the base of the Old Tourian Escape Shaft), and the route itself doesn't require any special equipment.
