The Metal Slug series is also available on arcades; wouldn't it be preferable to play this game on the "original" hardware? I'd imagine the PSX would be more prone to slowdown, though I grant I haven't watched any movies of gameplay on it. My only advice is to make certain to show off all the different weapons, transformations, and animations available in the game, even if it's slower. The Metal Slug series is so superbly drawn and animated that it'd be a shame to miss out on all the little details. For example, when overweight your melee weapon turns into a fork and your idle animations include devouring donuts. You should probably also turn one character into a mummy at least for a little while, despite the massive DPS nerf (due to being limited to the pistol and incredibly slow grenades). And there's the Hadoken-throwing POW, the soldier reactions to your arrival, the vast quantities of destructible backgrounds (especially in stage 4)... One possible "rule" for the gameplay to prevent it from being too arbitrary would be to save every POW and get the vehicle bonus at the end of every stage. The slowdowns inherent in achieving that goal should give you enough room to show off a lot of little details.

What about what errror1 said? "The reason for those missed attacks was to charge his super bar." Now ideally this should be explained in the movie description, but some leeway should probably be given for the fact that he is not fluent in English (which shouldn't be a prerequisite for getting a movie published here), which makes writing the descriptions difficult.

Can't be dodged? I avoid poison clouds all the time. You just have to recognize the precursor; I don't think there are any attacks in D2 that don't have some kind of signal you can recognize.

His computer's specs are irrelevant. The emulator is saying "insert a lag frame here" where the DS itself does not. It's an emulation bug.

You need to have at least one life by the time the screen finishes fading out. Bombs are used because they're a very slow killer, giving a large opening for the player to die (thereby triggering the fadeout) before enemies are killed for the points needed to gain a life. It occurs to me that it might be possible to trigger this glitch with ordinary attacks, in which case you could avoid the lag from the bombs. But that would require amazingly good timing to fire a shot, get killed, and then have the shot kill an enemy.

People tend to complain about "No killing except..." rules. How much room is there to play with the enemies if you still are required to kill each one? I remember the SNES Gradius 3 TAS leaving some enemies alive fairly long, for example.

You should read through the Puzzle Bobble threads for inspiration: Submission for the SNES version Thread in the SNES section Judging from the YouTube video you showed, the gameplay would be fairly repetitive, even if you could manipulate the game to give you the color you need every time. I'm not certain this is a very good game to TAS.

Okay, guys, this isn't productive for anyone. Could you please take it to PM if you really need to continue?

It is true that most of the really slow stars can be skipped; under identical conditions a 70-star run would be significantly more than twice as fast as a 120-star run. Of course, the 120-star run being worked on uses BLJs so they aren't directly comparable.

Personally I found it interminably dull; the gameplay isn't quick and the puzzles often required a lot of repetitive actions to build up slidable blocks.

Shinobi, for the Game Gear, is a fairly fun game. There's five different ninjas with different weapons and abilities (e.g. pink ninja throws bombs and can walk on the ceiling; blue ninja has a grappling hook; green ninja throws shurikens and can double-jump). The bossfights are liable to be a bit slow but I think it'd be a good game to run anyway. The last level is a maze that requires showing off each of the ninja's abilities, including a lot of tricky jumps that'd be cool to do at TAS level.

Looking good! Shame about the lag. Is that going to happen with all of the creatures that are made up from multiple components? I do hope that when a run gets submitted it does something creative with the drawing for the save file. :)

Yeah, you need the BLJ to skip Bowser's endless stair before getting 70 stars. Speaking of which, Kyman is (was?) working on a BLJ-less 70-star run, which seems to be what Warp was looking for. It'll be a lot longer than the 16-star run was, but it has that nice unambiguous "no BLJs" rule.

In the second to last level, would it be faster to walljump right after hitting the door switch? I can't remember how much horizontal velocity walljumping gives you, but it seems plausible that it'd be faster than a normal turnaround.

I think I just figured out why the glitch occurs: when the game finishes fading out in a level, it checks to see if you have any lives left. If you do, it assumes that the fadeout was due to finishing the level; otherwise, you got a game over. Losing your last life starts a fadeout, then you gain a life -- voila! At least, this is my theory, not having examined the code for the game. Movie looked good; voting yes.

I'd err on the side of making and solving puzzles. Forum games that are just mindless postcount++, or things like roleplaying, wouldn't really fit in with the community here.

The pendulum should release the ball at the same time regardless of its length. Additionally, the ball launches with a velocity perpendicular to the pendulum (thus, 20° up from the horizontal). We can use the first fact to determine the amount of time the ball spends in flight, and the second to determine how far (horizontally) it flew during that time. That gives us the horizontal velocity, with which we can solve for the vertical velocity using basic trig; that in turn gives us the ball's kinetic energy, which was derived from its potential energy, which depends on the length of the rod. I don't feel like plugging in the numbers, but this should be the right approach.

Well, according to the route we're selling a red potion, which could be duplicated for more rupees. Do we have the wallet space to be able to use them without making another trip to the banker?

I have to say I didn't find this particularly interesting. It doesn't seem like the physics of the game are very complicated, and your car has a sharply limited number of angles it can point in, so most of the game is spent watching a car drive down a perfectly straight road while itself being perfectly aligned with that road. It seemed competently-enough executed, but the enjoyment just wasn't there for me. Meh.

Are magic beans out of the question? We should come fairly close to them while getting the song for the swamp palace, right?

IST: do you have a hard drive in your 360? If so, did you install the game to it?

Thanks for answering my questions. For the witch, I was mainly just curious if there was something special about the curiosity shop. Since (IIRC) we don't need to talk to the witch anyway to get to the Deku Palace, she'll not be making an appearance in the run.

I do like Super Metroid, and still don't think this should be published. I believe this is the most pertinent of OmnipotentEntity's arguments:
There's one or two neat tricks that don't appear, such as the lake missle [sic] skip, but those would be better shown off on Saturn's Youtube Channel. I don't feel that it's worth 100MB to download the movie file for just that.
The people who are going to be interested in this run are already familiar with Super Metroid. Indeed, more than familiar, I should say; you pretty much have to be a fan of the game to appreciate what is involved in making this run. It's a very boutique piece of work, in other words, and I think it's too specialized for this site. For someone who isn't familiar with the game, this run will mostly look like the any% run, just slower.

Oh my. This does sound handy. The detours to pick up extra bottles always did annoy me. Would it be worth trying to grab a different item to replace instead of the bow? Pick up a magic bean, maybe, or a convenient mask? I can't remember if the current route calls for firing normal arrows at any point without having wiped out your magic meter first (i.e. for the ST boss). What happens if you dupe a bottle to a bottle? I assume from your last bit (trying to dupe eggs) that the contents don't get transferred. Can you do a similar trick other times you're prompted for items? For example, when giving medicine to Koume (or is it the other sister?)? Or is the curiosity shop special in some way? What happens when you Song of Time after transforming items to bottles?

Thanks for the encode, Nineko! Seemed an enjoyable enough game. Things kept moving at a good pace, anyway. I don't think it was spectacular, but it certainly meets the standards of the site.
