I don't think that Dan necessarily has to be the chosen character. I mean, yes, in normal play, he's generally the hardest to play as, but I doubt that'll make much of a difference in a TAS. It's like giving all the enemies 5x health in a run where the fastest playstyle is pacifist. Though if you do decide to use Dan, remember to make use of his unlimited taunts.

I actually don't think speed is necessarily the best way to go for this game. I'd see a speed game as consisting of repeatedly building up the shortest combo necessary to defeat your opponent, which in many cases wouldn't be particularly large -- plus, you wouldn't get to show off many of the amusing animations during the fights. I say you should try to overkill every enemy as much as possible.

A run of this game would have to go for the secret boss, which means going 2-0 on every opponent and killing them with a maximum-power attack animation (where your chibi does their super). At least, that's what I remember the unlock condition being. In general I'd say build up huge attack combos. Pick a character with entertaining attack animations, since your drop pattern doesn't matter a whole lot. I'd say Hsien-Ko, or maybe Felicia because her pattern is ordinarily so horrid. Plus it's amusing to see the characters get beat down by a chibi cat. Or, y'know, Dan.

Remember how important it is in X2 to get the movement-enhancing abilities quickly -- Flame Stag gives you an airdash and Wire Sponge gives you a grappling hook of sorts, both of which markedly speed up movement in all of the stages. That's more significant than getting the weaknesses right. I don't remember the weakness cycle in X2 or what Magna Centipede's weapon does; I'm guessing it's needed to take out Wire Sponge before he goes berserk? (Edit: normally IIRC his stage has the improved X-Buster as well, which could be useful)

I watched the encoding, and didn't notice any particularly egregious desyncs. Yes, you could hear Marina shouting before the fade-in, but everything after that seemed to match up, so I assume that's justs ComicalFlop starting play before he can see what he's doing. The run was neat, though I did fast-forward through the racing events. My only feedback was that you spent just about all of your spare time spazzing out; I wouldn't have minded more "acting". Like when you jumped along with one of the bosses. That was funny.

It's not pedanticism. :\ Getting consistent cross-browser layouts sucks. You'll notice that the YouTube example has every icon nicely self-contained. I think that the best way to go about doing this, though it's not nearly as sexy, is to just assemble a set of screenshots into, say, a 4x4 grid, instead of trying to break them up into these irregular shapes. Barring things like the X1/X2 dual TAS, all images on a given page should have the same proportions since they're for the same console. And don't try to muck with forum images, assuming there's an easy way on the server to tell them apart. I mean, who knows what's going on on the forum?

Reminds me of the LotRathon my dorm ran in college. We started out with running the entire content of the trilogy through MS Word's auto-summarizer with a target length of 100 words. Every third word was "Frodo".

Yep, that's one messed-up table (FF3 on Ubuntu here). Just, y'know, confirming that XKeeper is not, at this moment, a raving loon. :)

I mainly thought that instant weapon-switch could make for more interesting TASes of the series because the TASer would no longer be penalized for switching weapons. If you compare the X series to the NES series, you can see that in the former the different weapons get used a lot more often, while in the latter, typically only one or two weapon switches are made per level. Obviously for purposes of comparing non-tool-assisted speedruns, instant switch isn't so important.

Sounds like it would be another case of the protagonist spending most of his time offscreen...

Thanks again for the encode, Nineko. Man, that game is bizarre. Didn't see any obvious mistakes, and while the bomb sections were tedious, that's what fast forward is for.

Wasn't 8 the one where enemy levels were based on your own, leading to one of my college friends complaining about Odin powerleveling his party?

Yeah, I mainly meant that the Megaman games are, like Super Metroid, incredibly well-understood at a technical level, which sets a much higher bar for the level of precision expected from a TASer. And while I for one wouldn't mind watching a TAS that wasn't made to a similar level of technical quality, I know a lot of people here would be comparing the hacked TAS to the original as a rubric for quality.

I doubt there'd be a huge amount of demand -- it just struck me that the games might get more interesting speedruns if the player weren't so heavily penalized for switching gear. At the very least weapons would get used more often. Unfortunately, with the amount of work required to make a Megaman TAS, I doubt anything much would come of it.

You're awesome again, Nineko! Thanks for the encode. The run looked quite good as well. Very solid.

I love how the concept of 100% has become increasingly meaningless as the DK series has progressed.

I wonder how hard it'd be (for someone who has a clue what they're doing, not me) to mod the NES Megaman games so that Select did instant weapon switch, without the teleport animation.

I try to avoid wasting food on the whole, but if the value of the wasted food is low, I'm willing to eat the cost. It's inefficient, which is annoying, but trying to min-max your life tends to cause more stress than it's worth.

There's plenty of Speed Tabs to get them both to ** speed, and that's all you really need.

I just want to pop in here and note that v.5 also doesn't work under VirtualBox. Carry on.

You're awesome, Nineko. Thanks! And wow, that movie was...something. Heh. I'm very glad for the detailed writeup, because even with it I could barely tell what was going on. Nice work!

If the levelup "TAS" is anything like the macros I used to use to farm self-multiplying enemies in Angband, it's probably just iterating the following blindly: * Go in a direction long enough to trigger a known encounter * Wait long enough for the ATB gauge to fill * Use a tech to kill all the enemies (Luminaire, say) * Wait for the tech to resolve; hammer the confirm button to clear out the experience/gold rewards * Go in the opposite direction long enough to go offscreen to reset the encounter * Use elixir/ether to restore MP That kind of thing doesn't have to be very picky on timing so long as your characters are consistently acting first in the fight. So all you have to do is copy and paste the same input over and over again into the movie file, then play it back at high speed and manually correct any areas where it "desynced". It's not especially efficient, but it doesn't have to be.

Okay, so he's trolling you, whatever, I don't care. Have you accomplished anything thus far? No? Then I don't think carrying it on is going to get anywhere either.
