For those of us who missed the AGDQ demonstration, is there a copy of the stream somewhere we can watch? I stopped watching after Gradius desynced twice. :(

There's not much there: you have to trigger a levelup on the overworld and they haven't managed to do that without using cheats. Still would make for some interesting potential skips if a non-cheating way to trigger it is found, since Ark can apparently walk on water.

Tseralith: ah, sorry, I was talking about Iji. I have no idea if Hyper Princess Pitch's realljoel's Dad mode is completable; Iji's very obviously wasn't due to the aforementioned shutter. Good luck with the TAS!

As I understand it, there's a shutter you need to open to finish the first mission, and it simply doesn't open on reallyjoel's Dad mode. I assume this is intentional so that the author didn't have to implement an entire game at that difficulty.

The levels and bosses were surprisingly faithful to the NES originals, aside from the atrocious music. The only points I had questions about were switching to Star Crash in one of the stages only to switch out for the boss, and not attacking Toad Man when he's in the air; the latter was answered to my satisfaction (can't use Water Wave unless you're on the ground) but the former still seems a bit dubious. All in all, looked good! Kind of WTF design on the whole (Wily's fortress is just Quick Man's stage?), but oh well.

Holy crap, yeah. I remember watching Morimoto's SMB3 run back in college. It's, uh, it's been awhile since then. ...now I feel old.

As I understand it, "New Game+" specifically refers to replaying the "normal game" except that you get to keep some or all of the power you had when you beat the game previously. Alternate mode unlocks are, as you say, referred to by more specific terms.

As a counterpoint to the above: does anyone know if the various speedrunning communities would accept a run that performed such tricks? In other words, have they had this argument yet? :)

Congrats on surviving the presentation and, despite everything, still managing to demo several games. Sounds like you ought to be ready to handle AVDQ, though you might want to bring some bandages. :)

Any run that entertains the audience can be accepted, but if you have weird rules then you're basically shooting for the Moon tier without having the Vault available as a fallback (because your run isn't a standard "as fast as possible" run). At least, I think that's how it works. I doubt that an FFMQ run would be able to succeed purely on the basis of entertainment (barring the discovery of some really weird glitches); it's a fun enough game, but watching it is honestly pretty dull.

Would resistances even make a difference in the run? I don't remember the current run having any problems with enemy damage. If you want to do a run with "dirty" SRAM, then you have to submit two runs: one unoptimized one that sets up the savefile for you, and another optimized one that's the run itself that people will watch. The first one is needed to verify that the second one has a "legitimate" start. That said, I'm not convinced that the run you're suggesting doing would be well-differentiated from the current run. Feel free to provide a counterargument. :)

Unlike previous Castlevanias, this is a very linear game, and only opens up a bit once you beat Wallman (the guy that throws Bomberman-style bombs around). Unfortunately that does mean that Shanoa's movement options are a bit limited for much of the game.

The problem being that people want to vote even if their vote is meaningless, so we give them an option to register their opinion even though the count for that option will be ignored. It serves the same purpose as the "Meh" vote did, but more explicitly. To look at it another way, a "Vault" vote is a vote for technical proficiency and would help the judges tell at a glance if the run "meets Vault criteria".

Right, a vote for Vault would be "I don't find this entertaining, but it's technically proficient enough to be published".

I don't think more than 3 answer options are needed. I've suggested changing it to something simple like Yes/No/Vault instead of Yes/No/Meh. Warp's idea is fairly similar, if more verbose.
If you're going to have a "Vault" option, then the options ought to be Moon/Vault/No.

The time displayed is simply the length of the input file; it's automatically determined. The "actual play time" is something that should be included in the movie description for ease of comparison with SDA and the like.

The password here is basically a stand-in for a save. We've had similar arguments before; generally people have said that once you've "unlocked" a password (i.e. seen it in-game from a clean start), you're free to reset the game and use that password. What you shouldn't do is use passwords that you haven't seen yet.

Just one question, since it's years since I played this: given how you muck about on icicle mountain, i presume it's an autoscroller; however, when you move to the top of the screen it definitely scrolls upwards faster. How does this stage work again? I'm sure I'll kick myself when I find out the answer.
I'd always assumed that the fight with Nana and Popo started after you'd climbed a certain amount of the mountain, but given that numeric faffs about instead, I'm guessing it's just on a timer. Actually the way that level works is that the level itself is falling slowly, while the camera is fixed! This is mostly noticeable in how it affects your jumps. After awhile it speeds up and a single jump gives you massive airtime because the ground keeps falling away from you. Presumably when you get towards the top of the screen the level scrolls faster to keep you "onscreen". For my part, easy yes vote. Nice work, numerics! I could have hoped for more playing about with items, but I imagine they're really hard to manipulate, especially on Very Hard.

Quick noob question: what's the rationale for going for in-game time rather than real time?
Like with most games where in-game time is given priority (c.f. Sonic, Super Metroid), the reason is that there's a community of non-TAS racers for this game, and it's good to be able to compare the TAS results to what those racers get.

Surely the OS-relevant temp directory (/tmp for Linux/OSX, and something like /Users/username/Local/AppData/Temp for Windows IIRC) would be a safe place to put such files?

It sounds like it might be a good idea for the emulator to simply write a copy of the movie-thus-far to a temporary file somewhere periodically, as long as the movie file isn't grotesquely huge. This needn't impact performance as it should be trivial to spin off into a separate thread.

Will you be dryer if you walk or run in the rain, and what effects would the intensity and the angle of the rain falling have on this theory? Logic to me would suggest if the rain falling perfectly downwards then it would make no difference if you were to run or walk due to being hit by an increased volume of rain when running.
Imagine running infinitely quickly. You'll cut a path through the raindrops in the shape of your silhouette, but no drops will fall on you. Slowing down allows drops to fall on your head in addition to hitting you horizontally, therefore it will make you wetter.

I would assume that the game just reads some small portion of the disc, constructs a hash, and uses that hash as the seed to an RNG that determines which monster you get. As a result, you should be able to create discs with arbitrary data on them and have them work; no need to worry about copyright, and IMO making such "forged" discs would be perfectly acceptable.
