Right below your post was a small text-only ad for some PID temperature controllers. So, no.

Only to the extent that Nach trolling the forums generates more page views on said forums, thereby increasing the ad revenue for the site...

I don't know about your submission problems, but I suggest posting a WIP here before making a submission. You'll get a lot more constructive feedback here in the non-Workbench sections of the forum than you will with a submission. Sadly, people can be rather cruel with their comments on the workbench, and it is very hard to make an improvement to Super Mario Bros. 1. You can upload your movie to Microstorage and then share the link with us here. Welcome to TASVideos!

what happens if we don’t give permission to it? will the site’s publication be removed?
You do realize that this isn't going to be about removing existing encodes from YouTube, right? It's about making certain that all new official encodes linked from the tasvideos.org site go to the same channel, and (eventually) that all publications on tasvideos.org have a corresponding encode on the channel. As natt said in the original post, as the creator of a run, you can toss encodes up wherever you like. They just won't be an official part of the publication here unless they're on the TVC.

Eh, speedruns of Smash Bros. games tend to be repetitive "get the enemy into the air and then spike them off the side"-fests. Personally I liked that you kept the gameplay varied. Nice work!

Couldn't reviews go onto the wiki? Then you could format them, include extra screenshots, whatever. Linking them into the publications could simply be a matter of checking to see if a wiki node exists (e.g. wiki:GameReviews/GameName) and linking to it if it does; that node would then link to individual reviews. So if you wanted to add a review to a game that didn't have any, first you'd create wiki:GameReviews/GameName/ReviewByYourName with your review of the game; then you'd create wiki:GameReviews/GameName and add a link to the review on that node. Then the next time the cache gets flushed, the site would pick up that there are reviews for GameName and link them from the publication.

IIRC Steam and Hourglass don't mix well, but in any event I was under the impression that the Steam version is implemented in Flash, so that wouldn't help anyway.

"No cannons" is a strict subset of 100%, and thus not IMO interesting (assuming of course we get a 100% run). The actual gameplay in the levels needs to be significantly modified for the third run.

How would it compare to a tiny-only run? It seems to me that there's room for roughly 3 runs of the game: any%, 100%, and some kind of challenge run which is ideally as different as possible from the other two.

The judge put the reasoning for their decision at the bottom of the first post, like they always do. Judges can and do ignore the votes in favor of comments in the thread and their own judgement.

FF3 got a rerelease on the DS, which was translated. FF5 got a rerelease on the GBA, also translated. 4, of course, has been available in various incarnations for ages; it's Square's favorite Final Fantasy to rerelease in different forms. 3 is notable for introducing the jobs system; 5 refined it. 4 is mostly notable for having a nontrivial plot.

Wait what. There's a Viewtiful Joe TAS? Where?

I already noticed a few spots where I could improve the run but I noticed that when I made changes say at the beginning of the run, there is one part of the run later on that ends up being different than expected, as if everything was one frame off, but I'm pretty sure it isn't. Is this normal or am I just really one frame off?
It's normal. What you did (changing an earlier part of a movie) is commonly called "hexing", for hex-editing, the way we used to have to make changes like that. And depending on the game, hexing can work either perfectly fine or not at all -- there's rarely any middle ground. The problem is usually that anything that depends on randomness will change when you do an earlier bit faster, which can throw the entire rest of the run off. Alternately, you might actually just be a frame off; figure out where to add a frame (or eliminate it), and you could recover the run. But it can be a fiddly business.

Turning off the helmet seems like a clear, easy speed/entertainment tradeoff. Spending a second to improve the entire run when that run's going to be most of an hour long is an easy decision. Just do it.

Oh dear, Rush Cannon made that boss fight a bit of a joke. Oh well. I guess that means the refights will be more interesting since they won't be retreading earlier ground. Keep it up!

Each of the Super Mario Allstars games is just a remake of an existing game, and those games all have all-levels runs done for them already, so what exactly are you looking for?

I just want to say that I think it's awesome how realtime speedrunners like you are making use of tools to do their research into how the game works. It's a neat bit of crossover between the two communities. Thanks for sharing your results, and good luck with your runs!

And you are somehow harmed by other peoples' interest in this series? How SDR chooses to spend his time is his business. At the very least, if you'd like him to work on something else you could be a hell of a lot more polite about it.

Depends on if it affects the randomness or not; even if it doesn't I doubt that the encoders and publishers would be interested in re-doing everything for such a small and almost-invisible improvement, considering the length of the run.

Agreed with Tub and Dada on the use of thumb drives. They're the modern replacement for floppy drives, not a serious data storage system. And since you're transferring stuff over USB, having a huge drive isn't usually going to be that helpful (unless you have a USB 3.0 port and compatible drive) since the transfer times are going to get painful pretty quickly. I've been using a Kingston 4GB DataTraveler thumb drive for years and it's never given me trouble. The cap still stays on reliably, though I grant it just sits in my backpack when I'm not using it.

Nintendo consistently appears to be doing something incredibly stupid that then turns out to be brilliant -- at least in terms of success for their company. Say what you will about the Wii's motion control, it sold a crapton of consoles, including a bunch to people who had never played videogames before in their lives, and all at a profit. Thus, I'm reserving comment on the Wii U because anything I could say about it will likely come back to bite me in the ass.

Small-only, or Tiny-only? :) Of course a Tiny run would have to be Small-only until a blue mushroom becomes available. Otherwise, most of the upgrades don't really improve mobility, do they? Shell Mario can bash open some blocks that can't otherwise be broken, and Big Mario on up can break blocks with a ground pound, but otherwise nobody has an advantage, as best I can recall.

In other words, would you rather have tasvideos.com "work", or would you rather have more reliable servers? You can't have both.
