This person's acted very erratically with respect to the site in the past. I've stopped trying to find rational explanations for their behavior.

For reference, currently-starred Mario games: Mario 64 0 stars Super Mario World any% Super Mario Brothers 3 warped These all have an excellent pedigree. If one had to go, I guess I'd take SMW's star, but it's not exactly an easy choice. I do think that the new SMB2 warpless run is on par with all of these, though.

YouTube's framerate is lower than the framerate of the SNES, so many flickering effects can easily be screwed up. For example, Super Metroid has Samus flicker on and off at 30Hz when she gets hurt, but in YouTube unless you know what you're doing when you prepare the video to be uploaded, you'll end up with her either disappearing entirely or looking completely solid. I assume something similar is going on here.

I'm confused about the first screen in 4-3. Why do you keep going up and and the ladder? Does it somehow manipulate the baby birdo to shoot an egg faster or something?
Birdo's egg spitting is on a frame rule, so regardless of where you wait, you will have to wait before he can spit the egg. It's not that he's manipulated; it's just that they chose to wait inside instead of outside, so they could play with the ladder. That run was amazing, guys! My most WTF moments were the elevator and mole glitches. Very nice work!

Hunh. mmarks is banned now. Okay. On the off-chance that you can tell us, what'd he get banned for?

Clearly entertainment is subjective; thus, whenever someone makes a statement about what is more entertaining, you can mentally insert an "in my opinion" at the start of their sentence. No need for them to write it out. I think this is one area where we'll just need an official ruling on how arcade games should be run. Either you should use the bare minimum credits to play the game, or you should be allowed to input extra and then make use of the extra resources they provide. In either case some portion of the audience isn't going to be happy: in the former, because the game is slower due to not having extra deaths available, and in the latter, because making use of extra credits reduces the apparent skill. In both cases of course any generated movie still has to pass the overall-entertainment test -- thus, for example, a run that consisted solely of buying your way to victory, even if that were the fastest strategy, would be unlikely to be accepted.

Man, bosses just turn into punching bags. You manipulate their AI by hitting them when they'd normally start an action, right?

Also in Arcade TMNT DarkKobold USES coins to get lives, which at the begining numbered 0 for all turtles. So lifes ARE actually infinite in this run.
Some number of coins must be expended at the start of the game to start playing, but ideally 1) no extra coins should be required once play has begun, and 2) the minimum number of coins needed to start play should be used (which is 4 for DarkKobold's case given that it was a four-player run). If I recall correctly, none of the turtles die in TMNT Arcade; thus, those conditions are met.

In most arcade games, a game over screen is just what you get if you let the continue screen time out. Arcade games have different definitions of failure from console games, the better to milk money from you.

More generally, in most console games, deaths are either a finite resource, or they're infinite and dying to the point of needing a continue is not helpful. In almost all arcade games, deaths are functionally infinite and continuing is actively helpful. Exceptions exist to both rules (I'm sure I've heard of an arcade game where you were limited to at most three continues), but these should be sufficient for making rules of thumb.

I guess the question is, if you take Hawk + Reisz here, will they class change sooner? If so, then they'll make some fights faster that they otherwise wouldn't be as good for. Otherwise, they should pick up the needed EXP incidentally along the way, won't they? Or if you do end up needing to grind later, it'll be faster because the enemies are worth more.

Wow, that's pretty complex stuff. How did you find the counters for the enemy AI? Anyway, good luck!

How would "now" be encoded into the movie without using a savestate?

Beware Musashi's deadly ankle kick attack! This was very repetitive, though the third stage broke things up a bit. Still, voting meh. About the best I can say for this game is that it has very meaty sound effects. Also, I thought Musashi was a samurai, but he's pretty clearly being made out to be a ninja here... Thanks for the encode, Undie!

Recca has a button code to unlock Zanki mode (all enemies fire bullets on death) which includes resetting the game. The reset button is assuredly a valid input for that game. I have found a counterexample; your argument is invalid. EDIT: another counterexample: Zanac's stage select code requires you to reset the game 13 times.

Thanks for the encode, MMarks. I have to say that this game doesn't seem like it makes a very entertaining TAS. Autoscrollers really need something special behind them to be worth watching, but this is just really bland. How many times do you shoot down the same green helicopter? The enforced multishot (and thus missed shots), and the use of the same character twice, certainly don't help. Voting meh for game choice and choices within the game. If you really want to TAS scrolling shmups, I suggest looking into arcade bullet hells, or Recca on the NES.

That's an unfortunate result of the laggy drawing system. Fortunately, Perfect Dark doesn't have this issue.

The gameplay seemed solid. I see no reason not to publish this just because we're getting closer to being able to TAS a completely different version of the game. Yes vote; nice work!

It is also known that the quadrilateral can be inscribed within a square, which to me implies that each of its vertices is on the square. Given that, I'm not certain it matters if the thing is self-intersecting or not; wouldn't the two give the same result?

I guess we don't have any reason to assume that Nintendo uses something other than the IEEE 754 floating point layout...

Quel surprise! Arukado has made a SotN TAS! ;) Good to see that the emulator is capable of this much. Keep up the good work!

For my part I found that run to be rather tedious, but then I've never really been a fan of the Wario games. What was so particularly awesome about it that someone who hasn't played the game would appreciate? Mostly I just saw some wall glitching, but there are plenty of runs that provide that.

Given that most enemies do not serve as roadblocks in this game but rather as set-piece challenges, making them take twice as long to kill is not an automatic reason to avoid hard mode. It means we get to see more of the combat against them than we ordinarily would; on Normal enemies die rather quickly even without resorting to TAS techniques.
