For spectating, it seems reasonable to me that you could have a central server handling all of the connecting and data passing stuff. Players would connect to the server and say "Hey, I'm playing X game on my computer", then as they play they'd stream input and periodic savestates to the server as you suggested. Then spectators could connect to the server and say "Hey, I have these games on my computer; who's playing what?" and when they see game X, they could click on it and get the latest savestate and access to the input stream. This avoids the player having to worry about his upstream bandwidth or any issues with mass joins/disconnects; all that load gets transferred to the server instead.

In the specific case of F-Zero X, the game runs much more slowly with the E ROM than with the U rom -- apparently no adjustment was made to account for the longer frames in PAL compared to NTSC.

AFAICT isamu is looking for non-tool-assisted runs in the form of emulator input files, which are quite hard to find.

I do think that ending input early by using moon saber is an amusing and worthwhile idea. It'd also show a nice contrast between the TAS-enabled rapid attacking and what you usually get from the AI. You just won't be able to use it right at the start of the fight, is all.

It was undoubtedly made to look cute, but it's still firmly in the uncanny valley. Actually, several of the pauses reminded me of Data from Star Trek, which I found amusing.

To my knowledge (not that I've looked closely), SDA doesn't do much distribution of emulator input files though; their speedruns are all (supposed to be) made on an actual console to reduce the potential for cheating, and the runs are submitted/distributed as video files. Though there might be emulator input files on the forums, I suppose. Around here, mostly we just have this forum, which doesn't get a whole lot of activity.

So, maybe that was just a bad idea? (Identifying movie files by their extension.) I'm sure Grunt is smart enough to make this a non-issue.
Identifying movies by their headers, which is the alternative, is much more difficult -- you have to open the file as binary and examine certain bits, then have a big ol' state machine to determine which bits match which movie formats. And you have to deal with the possibility that the file might be compressed, so if you can't match it against anything you have to try uncompressing it and then start all over. Matching by file extension is simple and straightforward; all it relies on is that someone not be silly enough to pick a file extension that is already being used by one of the most common programs in the world. I'd guess that the .gz extension ranks up there with .gif and .png in terms of commonality. There's really no excuse for re-using it.

I'm pretty sure I've done special attacks more than twice in a row, though it's possible that one of the attacks missed.

You misspelled "FOODS". </helpful> It'd be nice to have a description of the overall gameplay and your goals, e.g. why you got the bow, why you destroyed various random buildings.

There's actually some question of if it'd be preferable to do the run with the translation patch on or not. There've been huge arguments over that for other games (e.g. Mother 3), though I don't think anything conclusive's been stated. Your best damage-dealing in this game comes from optimizing your physical strikes. Not only do spells and level-2/3 special techniques slow things down by pausing the action; many enemies also get automatic counterattacks if you use them. Try fighting the Darkshine Knight with spells, then do it again with just physicals; the difference is stark. Praetorius' party decision then makes sense: Kevin and Hawk have the best DPS (since they hit twice per attack), Kevin automatically gets a damage boost when he's in werewolf form, and Lise and Hawk both get spells that can hurt the enemy's defenses (though they don't stack; sounds like Hawk is along for the ride this time just based on DPS). Ordinarily you'd also use spells to boost your own strength, but Kevin gets this automatically and I think you can buy items that provide the buffs anyway. Likewise you can buy items that brand your attacks with elemental properties, which can really devastate bosses. The canonical "fast boss beatdown" party is Hawk/Lise/Kevin or Hawk/Lise/Duran (Duran can cast spells to give those elemental attributes, but his direct damage dealing is worse than Kevin's).

Good luck! It's gonna be a long TAS though. Almost an hour and you're only maybe a third of the way through the first half of the game. Your party loadout sounds reasonable, though I can't remember offhand which of the final dungeons is shortest (which could have informed which leader you chose). I'm a bit surprised you're going with Hawk and Lise and then sending Lise dark, though; is Hawk not going to use his spells at all? Regarding class changes, it might make sense to hang out in some high-XP spot in either the snowfields or the desert (whichever you do second, obviously) to grind to 18. Returning to the Holyland just to class change is a huge detour.

Incidentally, it takes about 30 minutes to bake enough granola to last one person two weeks (and homemade granola is miles better than anything you can buy in a store). Get a bread machine and you can make your own bread from scratch quite easily, too; depending on how much bread you eat, a $80 machine should pay for itself in a year or so (figure about $1/loaf for homemade bread vs. $3-4/loaf per store-bought). My usual lunch is a peanut butter and pickle sandwich (yeah, I'm a freak) and an apple. On days when I fail to prepare my lunch and have to eat out, I definitely notice a huge difference in my alertness in the afternoon, pretty much regardless of where I go. Not to mention it's costing me many times what the homemade lunch does.
Granola recipe:

5 cups rolled oats
1 cup sesame seeds
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup wheat bran
1 cup crumbled/chopped walnuts

1 cup canola oil
1 cup honey

1 cup dried cranberries

Mix together dry ingredients (not counting the cranberries). Heat oil
and honey on the stove to mix them, then mix in with the dry
ingredients. Add any spices at this point (cinnamon, etc. -- whatever
you add, you'll need a lot!). Bake on a cookie sheet at 350°F for 30
minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven, pour into a fresh
mixing bowl. Mix in cranberries, allow to cool.
That's it. Very simple. Moreover, it's very experimentation-friendly and you can be pretty sloppy putting it together (nobody's going to notice if you accidentally put in 1.5 cups of sesame seeds, or forget the walnuts, etc.).

ROMs are (generally) illegal. Asking for them (or distributing them) on this site is against the terms of use you agreed to when you signed up. You'll just have to find them on your own.

So maybe we should subsidize bread machines and sandwich fixings instead of raw materials, hey? Actually, subsidies in general are dangerous business. Witness the massive corn subsidies we still have that were originally created to correct a blip in the corn supply in the 70s. Basically, once business gets a new government handout, it's going to do everything it can to perpetuate that handout.

...man, that is messed up. Agility only matters for determining your position in a list, but items are read off the list in random order? Wow.

I've never seen the appeal of this game. It just looks horribly dull. Voting meh for game choice.

I'd rather the collapsible option, personally; sticking them inside scrollable boxes means that you're forced to only view as much of the script as fits inside the box, no more. Typically though people will either be reading the code (in which case they want to see as much as possible) or don't care at all about the code (in which case they'd want to collapse it).

Gonna have to agree with the no voters here. This should be an April Fool's submission, and should be dealt with like most other such. Maybe if you found a way to glitch through walls.

It's presumably measured in units per frame, where units is whatever the game decided to use as its scale. Real-world measurements like km would require you to first define how long a kilometer is in-game.

It could mean any number of things. In this case, I'm gonna go with "the woman's suit is badass". Though I do have to wonder why they painted the thing green. Or maybe that's just a base coat and they're going to do detailing later?

Neat! That's a good choice for atlas movies because the map is so hard to decipher in normal play.

Hooray, you got Hedgeshock! She may be practically useless, but that "whoah" clip she says sometimes when she starts rolling is adorable. <3 The run looks good!
