The developers need to be able to access the not-yet-complete feature so they can test it. And they shouldn't have to excise that code just because it's not ready when a new release is made, so they just disable the button (and, ideally, add mouseover text to tell the user that it's not ready yet). That may not apply in this specific case, but it's a decent rule of thumb any time you have a project that's being worked on by a small team as a hobby.

Ever since I found out about NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day, I've visited it daily and saved any images that particularly struck my fancy. After several years of that, I had built up over a thousand images with no real purpose in mind other than data hoarding. I wanted to have some space images on my wall, but most of them were too low-resolution to print well -- either the print resolution would be too low to look good, or the printing would be too small. The obvious answer (only took me a few months to come to!) is to make a collage. Insert a few days of sorting through and making short lists and then short lists of the short lists, banging together scripts to download copyright information, toying with programmatically tiling the images together, and giving up on that and figuring out a good layout manually. The plan was to cover a serious amount of wallspace, so obviously trying to use a traditional image editor with my computer's puny 2GB of RAM was out of the question. I turned to Perl and ImageMagick to composite the different images together. Then I went through several iterations. Ultimately I used the Orion nebula as a backdrop, giving me a comfortable 18000x18000 pixels to play in (the previous background was Galaxy M81, even bigger but not as visually interesting). Today I sent a 418MB TIFF file based on this smaller version off to the printers to get applied to 25 square feet of canvas. I'm going to figure out how to properly mount it when it arrives. In the meantime, does anyone else have any use for the thing? All of the images are public domain, so technically I could do whatever I want with it. Or you could. I was thinking of putting together a key and then making a torrent out of it, but there's no point unless someone else would download it. Much love to NASA and everyone else keeping an eye on the cosmos. There's so much beauty out there.

I agree that "bad mode" and "bad settings" should be combined. "Breaks self-imposed restrictions" should probably be rephrased as something like "Inconsistent restrictions". Should redundant submissions (accidentally submitting the same movie twice) show up on this page? Otherwise, I think your categories are good. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that you've forgotten.

Thanks for the encode, Flygon! I played this game back in the day (hey, a Virtual Boy was only $25 and I got three games for $10), and it always surprises me now how short and simple it was. Getting the extra treasures doesn't add a significant amount of time to the gameplay; you just duck into a few hidden caves that for the most part are barely even off-route! Anyway, very solid work; voting yes.

I just want to say that I'm enjoying reading about you two tearing this game apart, even though I've never played it myself (only ever played FFL3). Good luck with the run(s)!

I think that the RPGs that are suitable for TASing meet one of the following conditions: * Many people have played the RPG in the past. * Large portions of the game can be skipped by TASers. You need a large audience of people who have played the game because people who have not played the game are not as likely to enjoy it. This is far more true for RPGs than it is for other types of games. Alternately, you need massive skips so that even people who have not played the game can appreciate how broken the "gameplay" is. Without either of these two, most people who watch the run will become bored.

Thanks for the encode, Flygon! In the Woodman battle, couldn't you climb higher up the trunk to reduce teleport time? In Wily 2, why the switch to Leaf Shield? You only use it on one enemy that you ought to be able to kill with the buster just fine. Is it a matter of killing it before it can fire? Likewise the use of the boomerangs vs. a Sniper Joe shortly afterwards. On the whole, I didn't really care for this hack's graphical or musical choices, and the level design seemed generally standard fare. The Kirby level was especially bizarre. Sure, the bosses were different, but they died so quickly it didn't matter in practice. Voting meh.

How many keys are you trying to hold down? Keyboards have a limit on how many keys they'll accept at the same time. Try moving some of your buttons to the meta keys (shift, alt, control, etc.) since those tend to be less limited.

Two things:
  • Does this hack have anything over the published Rockman 2 hack, Rockman no Constancy? I don't think TASVideos wants multiple hacks of the same game published.
Each hack must stand on its own merits. The publication of one movie does not preclude the publication of an additional movie.

I would say the latter approach is preferable, but then I've generally favored playarounds over pure speedruns, especially in games where the speedrun would have predictable gameplay (and making every shot perfectly would generally be fairly predictable).

Thanks for letting us know, Hadron, and don't worry about it. It's not your fault that someone else submitted your run without permission. Good luck with your speedrunning!

The only thing I can think of is that collecting the EnbuPike would probably make it easier to kill enemies en route to GuardRobot. Aren't there several required fights, not to mention some really big (HP-wise) monsters, in that segment? This is obviously difficult to calculate, but could tip the scales. Also remember that you can hold off on equipping new gear until you're going into the inventory anyway (e.g. to equip RedArmor or use a Strength potion).

So basically, you're complaining that monsters that pose no threat whatsoever to your characters don't give any experience, and that the game doesn't let you achieve as ridiculous of a level as you'd like to? If you want a number-porn RPG, play Disgaea. It'll let you level all the way up to 9999.

This game is making it really hard to maintain my fantasy of Peach being a Machiavellian genius instead of a bubblegum-headed ditz. Then again, maybe that's all part of her plan... Looking good, Deign!

If I recall correctly, the PSX D-pad is connected underneath the surface of the controller; it only looks like four separate buttons. I could be wrong, though. Still, since U+D/L+R has been shown to be possible on unbroken D-pads it shouldn't matter. The only question is if there are any games that assume the player can't press both at the same time, and have odd behaviors if you do (Punky Skunk, maybe?).

There's a video somewhere of someone doing a L+R glitch to get through a wall, on a real console. It's tricky, but not impossible; it doesn't even require breaking the D-pad.

I would give a star to MM8 in preference to MM7, just because the quality of the game in question is so much higher (neither are very good games to play, but MM8 is leagues better to watch than MM7). But I like R&F better than either of the two games. On the other hand, the X1/X2 dual TAS has had a star for quite some time; it might be time to switch out to a different movie.

You should take a look at the published X-Men vs. Street Fighter TAS, which was very well-received. SDR made use of most (all?) of the characters under TASer control, using the vs. CPU matches to show off lengthy combos and the "player vs. player" matches to create drama. This keeps the characters cycling enough that the audience doesn't have time to get bored with a single character's moveset. I haven't played the game in question, but the basic concept would probably transfer well to any fighting game.

I've always felt that 100% runs where the items collected are entirely useless were rather pointless (barring games like SM64, where the entire point of the game is in the collections). The run should have the opportunity to take advantage of all the neat toys Zero is picking up.

Thanks for the encode, caitsith! This was enjoyable on the whole, though rather long. Very cute. Is it possible to hit the magician boss with Milon's "power-up" attack (the one you use to break blocks above you)? Ditto the sun boss (and is he puking lava at you?). What determines when Milon does his "holy crap that's a long way down" animation? Might it be possible to skip it by using the floaty shoes?

I always liked the hand-picked screenshots. I remember Bisqwit described his algorithm awhile back. It went something like this: * Pick a number of screenshots, N * Start running the game in an emulator. There are F frames in the run. Pick a window size, W. * When the current frame f is within i * F / N +- W, start comparing the current frame's image to the previous frame's image. * Use a correlation coefficient to compare how much two frames have changed. Find the frame within the window that has the greatest change from the previous frame; these are considered to be interesting frames. I don't think this would be particularly complicated to (re-)implement. Only problem is that it tends to work poorly in games like Zelda where the frames of greatest change are those where you're scrolling to the inventory screen or to another room.

You could just use original Kirby without power stealing, then his powered-up forms could be the curry and mint leaf.

Ahh, thanks. Subtle difference, that. The run looked good! I always liked the style for the virus stages, so it's not such a bad thing to have them be basically all there is. :)

Well, I enjoyed it, but so far it just looks like the standard run with detours. I think whether or not this will be publishable really comes down to how different it will be from the any% run. Still, nice work! Thanks for making it.
