Can't watch it right now, but the take-damage-to-regain-control seems to be the best option. I used a hack to move Donald around and no matter how far he is from the shaman, he will always lose control as he touches the ground.

No, it's not; it would take me a long time to find that shortcut on part 2. Looks like we're in perfect sync, let's keep on breaking the game!

Yes we can. (tested)
Oh, I was thinking about the shaman on Ninja Training Grounds, but that's great!

Double jump? O_o
Yes, the same trick used after the shaman's animation can be done in the reverse order; as Ninja Maui, jump as soon as your ying yang is about to run out, you will change to Donald in mid air, and you can jump again. I used it in a test of a new route on stage 3; http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1256133027/Dooty-and-r57shell-MauiMallard.gmv and I think we can skip the shaman's animation completely! But did you noticed how close the "Pau!" sign is on stage 2? Well, I wonder if we can reach it with the double jump! edit; just downloaded your script, man it's a monster script! but I can't check the programs; my Windows 8 is blocking it :( (something about a SmartScreen, I don't know what it is) edit2: Yes! The double jump can be used to skip almost the entire first part of stage 2; The shaman's animation is impossible to skip though...

Nothing to be sorry for :) it's not the final version yet, I just want to have something to compare. Also, the double jump is a powerful trick and I want to test something on stage 2!

A little update on the progress, I’m breaking my break to put together everything we did so far; 1) The skips on Mojo Mansion; elevator and floor 2) The skips on stage 2 plus the colored ninjas fight 3) A new skip on stage 3 using the double jump trick The WIP will end after the Mud Drakes fight, so we can continue on stage 4 after the New Year. I think I can finish this by tomorrow, so, see you there :)

I guess I've heard this on an old BeOS installation CD; If I had to reboot a hundred times... Well, if there are known improvements, and the author decided to ignore them, my vote is No also. It seems well played enough to be vault worthy though.

Don't worry about it, it will be on the final version of the run :) Also, we're on break, remember?

I get this idea from your jumping from doors in Mojo Mansion.
So, I think this, useless up to now, trick is going to work; If you jump long enough before you activate the shaman's animation, he will be facing the wrong way. And since the game thinks we're on the ground, I'm pretty sure it will let us jump on that high platform.

Man, what was that after the shaman animation? I didn't know you could do that in the air!!! In the first zip, I was thinking about doing it on a platform closer to the floor, but it's already amazing the way you did it! We broke two stages so far; Mojo Mansion and Ninja Training Grounds, so I think we deserve a little break :)

Looks like we're going to beat this game down to "bits"... I'm pretty sure we can skip at least one boss fight on stage 2. (the first dummy fight)

Okay, I understand, but I'll try to convince you some other time :) edit; using the spikes to reach the door is 20 frames slower, but while I was trying; edit2; The zip down trick saved quite some time on Mojo Mansion; http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1993891919/Dooty-and-r57shell-MauiMallard.gmv I know I said something about restarting the run as much as needed, but this is ridiculous...

Nice! r57shell – Stage 1, second part, last section -> jump on spikes to reach the door Dooty – Sorry, but I can’t figure out which spikes you’re talking about (yeah, I’m that dumb), do you have a picture? Oh, also; those annotations on screen are too much fun! Can you change your script to show only those? - It would be awesome to add commentaries on our movie on specific spots. The viewer will know when, where and why we did this or that thing on the run. And I'm searching for walls like this; It's possible to clip diagonally into them.

Wow, just wow! Downloading... but here; Here’s the optimized stage 1, with the new strategy; http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/46179836/Dooty-and-r57shell-MauiMallard.gmv Things you did faster/better than me; 1) Skipped a platform before the rotating thing, nice. 2) The last totem used as platform, sweet. 3) Taking damage after the totem, weird, but faster. 4) The high jump on those pipes, awesome!

Stop, I think we need more planning.
Don't worry, we can restart the run as much as we need to. If we find new tricks, better strategies or whatever - it's fine for me. Also, the game is hex friendly (not the boss fights), so it won't be a problem to fix early stages.

Hmm, completely same file as previous. We need to choose version. And, what you need from me now?
Sorry, my bad. Here's the file with the fall through spikes; http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1520150638/Dooty-MauiMallard.gmv We will take turns, you beat a stage and send it to me, I'll optimize it and send it to back to you. Doing that we can avoid mistakes, like me going in the wrong direction :) We'll use the European version for this run. I saw you already did a stage, so I'll optimize it now, and that's it.

Nice, we're a team! here's my last progress, the rum will be restarted then; http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1882003112/Dooty-MauiMallard.gmv edit; I forgot to mention, but you can fall through the spikes of stage 2 as well with the elevator's trick, but I can't find a use for it.

You beat me to it, but here; The Brazilian version is a lot easier to play in real time, but TASwise it is, sadly, a lot worse; * Some actions causes more lag * When you land from a jump your speed drops to zero * On the water, the damage animation is longer than waiting for the platforms to appear So, despite my excitement to TAS the Brazilian version, there’s no way to make it faster than the European one. But when I was playing the Brazilian version I found a new trick, so it was not a total disappointment; Donald can fall through the elevator’s floor if he hits the edge of a platform one frame before he lands on it. @ r57shell; Man, lots of cool stuff you found! I managed to use some of them so far, but I’m kind of playing the game for the first time, so if you think I could’ve used them more, please let me know. Also, no matter how optimized a strategy is, if you’re going in the wrong direction it is worth nothing. So, I’d like to ask you if you want to join me in this project as a partner, don’t worry if you don’t have any TAS experience, just play a stage using whatever tricks and routes you think are the fastest then send it to me to optimize. I’ll then send it back to you to play the next stage and so on. I think we could achieve better results working together. Please, think about it.

----------------------------------- sorry. edit; Tested it and it's a true 60hz game, so no, it's not just a hack of the European version, it's the real deal!

Thank you, r57shell! I'm not at home at the moment, but I downloaded your files and will watch it later. by the by, I'm really close to the Brazilian version now, the rom's name is - Donald in Maui Mallard (Brazil) a friend said that in this version you can take damage on the water in the first stage without dying, much like in the SNES version, so that part will be a lot faster too.

Oh, there, I don't need the punch (drink), the tube in the middle is one of the tubes I was not able to reach, but okay, I'll try it, thank you :)

Bottle? Umm... I'll have to check it out, but I do need more lightning bugs for sure to finish the boss faster. (oh, and thank you for the "crouch and shoot" trick, it is a lot faster than just shoot.) the tubes, man those tubes seems so close and yet I was not able reach them in succession.

I was wrong, the Brazilian version is not a hack; http://www.sega-brasil.com.br/Tectoy/index.php?title=Donald_in_Maui_Mallard It was not even translated to Portuguese, mind you. anyways, I'm doing a test run on the European version in the meantime; http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/11294322600107176

I didn’t know about the existence of the Genesis version of Maui Mallard until yesterday, when feos suggested me to take a look at it. The first thing I noticed is that there are only PAL versions of the game on the GoodGen 3.00 set, the one I have here, but one of the members of Sega-16 Forums posted something about an NTSC version, also known as TecToy version. TecToy manufactures the Brazilian Mega Drive console, and since there’s no longer a preference for NTSC/USA games, I’m really excited to TAS the Brazilian version of Maui Mallard. TV Tropes Org says that there are a few things on the Brazilian version that are missing on the European version, so I think it will be a plus too. Anyways, I’m still getting the hang of the game, so it will take a while for me to have something to show, and until then, if you know any tricks or glitches for the Genesis version, please let me know, thank you.
