I would find it a nuisance. Hard drive clutter. If people really want to see the submission text, they can just surf there. How often does that need actually arise?
It was funny. Kinda. I guess. The idea is funny, but the whole thing is poorly executed.
You can see him reading something at the end of the TMNT video, so you'd think it would sound more like Duckman quality ranting rather than silly crap that came off the top of his head.
"Mantra-chanting, incense-breathing, herb-sucking yahoos..."
Profanity lacks that kind of pointedness. If he's going to eviscerate the game, he should attack where it hurts, rather than try to conjure up some mildly disgusting imagery.
I voted meh.
I'm surprised this hasn't been published yet. Nothing spectacular, but definitely something nice to watch with a cup of tea, sort of like the runs for Jackie Chan's Action Kung-Fu.
Yes vote.
I messed with the magnets and was able to play around on the lower floor.
I would have tried the ladder trick, but I wasn't sure how to execute it.
Dead end. :(
Don't expect anything interesting to happen in the movie after I fall through the ceiling, by the way... probably should have trimmed that off before I uploaded. Oops.
Wow. Mirager AND RoyalShock on Kefka... the Crasshoppr fight... Locke the merchant, and general KUTAN the traitor!
One hit point for all! HAHAHA!
It's all the small embellishments that were missing from the published run that I like about this movie. You ran around during the pre-banquet countdown, checked in on Kefka, and used the toilet.
Good stuff all around.
The only concern I wanted to bring up was the usage of a potion in the Imperial Base. Sabin uses a potion on himself during battle, IIRC, but wouldn't it have been faster to use the potion in the menu before the battle?
I hope this game gets picked up, for whichever system.
Hacks, like Air and Super Demo World, but not translations.
Personally, I'd rather see the Japanese version with an audio commentary that explains the plot, and maybe some tasty bits of dialogue... along with all the TAS'ing tricks involved, of course. Beats trying to glean some meaning from Engrish that's too fast to read.
Wow. I remember trying that rope-skipping thing in realtime, years ago. I didn't think it was actually possible to get enough distance.
Very impressive.
I was disappointed with the last MKII submission, but this was just unbelievable. 18 minutes of spit-takes and yelling "What the hell was that!?" over and over.
Kung Lao's merciless $hit-kicking of Liu Kang!
Brilliant!
My interest flagged toward the end, but I wouldn't have changed much... make Shao Kahn sing Jingle Bells next time.
I voted yes, and think that everyone who's ever played an MK game should see this.
Edit: And I'm apparently the only one who thinks so. Heh. Oh well...
It took an hour, but I got a workable SNES-disassembler. Now I just need to review some documentation and then I can set to work on figuring out the AI and RNG.
Right. Chaotic is probably the way to go for pretty much everyone.
Having a ninja seems wise, as well. I can snag two matou claws before chapter 3, they dodge like crazy, and apparently dish it out too, when they get around level 25... of course, that's immaterial, since I don't know if any of my characters are actually going to get to such a high level, even by the end of the game.
How do you mean, exactly? Stat growth, or is it just their ability to use whips?
Yes... I remember deciding awhile ago that I would be recruiting her for that strategy (and, of course, so that I could mention in the commentary that "I just recruited a loser into the battalion." and "the end boss was just killed by a loser!")
I still don't fully understand how the witch trick/elemental boosting works. It would seem that I should have Aloser and most of my team as wind elementals, so the stat-bonuses would stack up mightily, especially during a storm... assuming that's how the bonuses actually work, of course.
As for the misc. classes... I was half-hoping to pick up a dragon, because, come on- it's a freaking dragon. Probably a bad idea, since they're slow, and probably not all good enough in battle to compensate. Though I did read that a certain kind of upgraded dragon could be handy as a tank.
Going out of my way to pick up a lizardman seems like a poor investment, and hawkmen I'd probably want to put in high places and arm with bows, but I'll have plenty of archers for that, so there's probably no need... the mechanics guide on Gamefaqs suggests they make alright melee fighters, favoring axes. That would leave them outclassed by berzerkers, but they can fly...
Then again, I Canopus is probably enough.
I was also thinking it would be good to have a ghost. There are only a handful of enemies who can Exorcise them, and they can teleport, so I can have them muck with the enemy AI. What do you guys think?
Just out of curiosity, what are the first four Episodes? Novels? I googled, but they don't seem to even exist.
Yes... that's good entertainment value, too. Which also reminds me that it may behoove me to employ a lawful/wrong element soldier as cannon fodder from time to time...
Thanks for your support, everyone.
I can sort of relate to the feeling that save-states cheapen the experience... but in practice, they save us from having to redo tedious things. An RPG, for instance, if you die in a sneak attack and have to re-play the last 15 minutes... who has the time for that?
Most of my actual playing is in MAME, where I can just mash the "add credit" button... and continue playing Final Fight with Guy and Haggar simultaneously, at 100% speed.
Now that is my idea of fun. Even when doing that in zsnes or snes9x, the thought of reloading doesn't even cross my mind because the challenge is so intense that my head hurts afterward.
So, my theory is that we become too sophisticated as gamers for the old classics to really hold our attention like they did when we were younger, and that's why it becomes so goal-oriented.
It gave me a 404- change the W in the url to a V.
A very interesting game. Looks very exploitable, as you have already demonstrated. I don't think you'll have much use for humping cavemen, though I hope more bugs are found. :)
I know that picking a different target and/or method of attack generally results in the same basic things happening, but with different outcomes; in one draft of the second battle, I threw a rock at Lans, and the white knight blocked two of the hits rather than taking it all on the nose... it should be possible to watch the RNG's memory address, and to thus predict combat outcomes, assuming I ever get around to doing the ASM hackery.
I doubt the messages would affect things at all, and I'm almost certain that time plays no role in anything, aside (possibly; haven't tested yet) from the frame where the mission is accepted. You know, "Fight it out!"
The position at which Denim stands at the end of his turn would probably affect AI instead of the RNG. But again, that's an assumption from a few hours of playing which hasn't been tested thoroughly.
All things considered, I would think AI manipulation will be more of a time saver than blocking hits. In the first mission after getting the battalion, it might be much easier to slay the leader if her goons would stand aside, for example.
It's also possible to save and quit mid-battle like I mentioned earlier, which may have the same effect as taking the turn differently. So, it's probably useless (since it adds about 1000 frames each time it's used) but that also requires more testing to be certain.
As for the route... well, it only splits in a few different points. From reading a walkthrough on gamefaqs, I'm still not sure if one is faster than the other, or has more battles.
I had a basic idea of the army I was going to try to build, but I seem to have deleted my notes.
Feck.
The number of troops I should have isn't certain, either. More troops need more exp, which means more standing around slaughtering goons. Fewer troops mean less turns taken, but will raise the enemy level.
I shall continue to investigate. Hopefully I'll have more useful information tomorrow.
Luck manipulation is difficult, as the only opportunity in battle to influence the RNG seems to be at Denim/Assman's turn in that second training battle.
Hopefully someone else can make use of your observations, but this is a huge game and I only have time on weekends to really sit down and work on it. Even if I finish one battle a week, doing the entire game could take two years. :(
But, I'm fairly confident that I'll find some really cool trick if I keep at it long enough.
The music, the noises. Good lord, it sounds like bad porn!
That may not be reason enough to run a game, but it couldn't hurt. It actually looks a lot like Sunset Riders mixed with the no-damage hit from Shadow Dancer.
It'll be interesting to see if the game passesses enough variety to fill more than a few levels.
No idea. But, I'm fairly certain it can't get much better than that. A few points won't make much difference anyway.
I wasn't aware that the party's elements were determined like that... I mean, they give you 4 male, 4 female, and one is of each element. I think it went wind, earth, fire, water, twice. It would be quite a surprise if that happened at random.
The only gripe I have about the run is that it's 1-player. It definitely looks like two players could have taken the bosses out in substantially less time... but that's mere conjecture.
It's well executed, and since he didn't misspell my name in the submission text, I'll vote yes. ;)
I started a rough draft. There's a lot to be answered for so far...
-I'm using rapid-A instead of frame advance, so the dialogues may not be optimal. It'll add up to a few seconds by the end.
-I have no idea what the birthday thing is for.
-The questions in The Inquisition were answered for max hp/str/vit/dex. The bonuses seemed negligible:
HP STR VIT DEX
2 5 1 1
But it looks like it worked out pretty well, if you have a look at Assman's stats.
-Fire element seemed a safe choice; I'll probably want a fire element wizard who can burn grass to find hidden treasure, and if most of my team is fire elemental, I can use the "witch trick" later on.
-All messages have been turned off. No frame-wasting announcements for EXP gains, magic attacks, etc. Yay.
-There doesn't seem to be a way to skip that opening cutscene. Saving 6000 frames might be nice...
-I tested the reset trick, which is used for luck manipulation... which is pretty cheesy. It also costs 1000 frames or so. I used it in the first battle so that Assman picks up a card (+3 VIT!) instead of treasure I'd get at the end of battle anyway. In the future, however, I can probably just throw a well-placed rock or start the battle a frame later and manipulate things that way.
-I killed the first boss with Assman's own hand, netting him a level-up. VICTOLY IS MINE!
-The army name is "Bisq". I think a few regulars might find their way into our ranks... to be used as cannon fodder! AHAHAHA! Actually, I need to go back and try to manipulate myself some better troops when Bisq Faction initially forms. I know their elements aren't random, but their stats?
You mean like switching to a Ninja class so that a Terror Knight could have decent WT?
I'm sure you're right, in any case. I found that there are some ~100 battles in the game, not including hell gate, which is another hundred or so. Some can be skipped, while many would (ideally) entail killing the leader while ignoring his troops. Very low EXP gain for any kind of upgrading.
I'm not discouraged, though. I think this is almost the kind of challenge Nach was describing in the challenge thread. Tactics Ogre has the added edge of not being trash.
I tried the subtitle thing way back when I was new here- I added a feature to FCEU so that one could write subtitles in a txt file accompanying an fcm.
It sucked. Horribly. I don't know how to express how disagreeable it was to my mind to try and keep track of what was going on in the movie with text appearing at the bottom of the screen, describing what I'm supposed to be looking at even while reading the text. Though, for this run it might work a little better, since there's a lot of stoppage...
Regardless, there's no reason why I couldn't mix the audio, as I would more than likely watch the movie while recording, and my headset mic picks up audio from the headphone. It would all be quite satisfactory... and the music does indeed kick tremendous ass.
It's simple- ASM isn't for idiots. :D
Romhacking.net has all sorts of guides, ranging from beginner to advanced, for whichever processor(s) you're trying to learn.
The plot doesn't factor into it; it's the in-battle stuff. Most people can't even read "cure" even though they'd understand it if it flashed by in an 1/8th of a second in English text.
I'm more or less prepared to record an audio commentary to accompany any run, explaining the plot, characters and most of all, tricks and strategy.
