The BIOS I used was Sega CD BIOS V1.10 (U).bin. That may help you Sonik (and others).

Yeah, this run was surprisingly easy to watch. Pretty much just the right length for what a TAS author has to work with. The backgrounds were actually pretty awesome (the New York City background was amazing). Also, the ridiculous interludes concerning Madonna were hilarious, but I was a little put off by their mis(over)use of ellipses. Voting yes.

Update: I managed to save ~ 1700 frames on For Pete's Sake (over the published movie; also, the levels are the same). I'll probably keep this one a surprise for when I submit the movie.

I'm looking forward to the Safari Zone. Looks like you're going to catch a lot there! I think the Pokemon that took the longest for me when I was playing through was Tauros. I could never even FIND them.

Exactly, but the beauty is that you can access Sonic 2's bonus stages from any of Sonic 1's checkpoint posts.

I don't think Hyper Sonic is in this, as that would require extra hacking, and there's no mention of it on the hack description page you linked.

You couldn't be Super Sonic in Sonic 1 at all though, which is why I mentioned it.

That looks like a pretty badass hack. I would LOVE to see an all emeralds run of this. It also looks like it's possible to get Super Sonic as early as SYZ Act 2! Maybe next we'll see S1,2,3+K all in one (the best part about this would be that the "ending" of sonic 2 would blend in seamlessly with the beginning of 3).

Nice, that's a hard stage to optimize, with all the rope zigzagging.

Link to video Haha, Sonik, you beat me to it (I began uploading it before work and I just got back). So yeah, the only exciting thing happens right at the beginning where I skip the escalator. Other than that it's a pretty standard run. I tried in particular to skip the cage segment (almost definitely impossible) and any of the fans (almost possible, but probably unskippable). The first incarnation of the boss takes five hits with invincibility time in between. The second form takes 20 hits, also with invincibility time in between. Whips, plasma, regular shots, and even its own bombs all do the same damage to it.

Tompa, you beat me to this one. Sort of. My suggestion was to try to squeeze past the Zinger with Dixie to the left so that you can use the ledge to hit Kiddie's head off of. If this doesn't work, just do what Tompa said :p Also, one minor note, the second time you enter Squeals on Wheels, you can throw the first keg sooner if you jump (the game lets you release Y a bit sooner if you jump first). This is the only time I noticed this happening, but you might want to check other spots.

I managed to save 42 frames on Big Bruty, mostly due to the rope thing (and a bit from climbing up a particular ledge faster). Not the most amazing results for a whole lot of hexing, but it will look nicer in the end if I'm consistent with the tricks. EDIT: This game is amazingly hex friendly. I was able to hex the whole rest of my WIP in with just three single frame desyncs, only one of them in an actual level. Back on track!

I've found that this new trick only really works when Jim is heading to the right on a horizontal rope. This saves me some work, but it still means I have to redo Big Bruty and possibly deal with bad desyncs (hopefully only for the rest of Big Bruty).

Voting no. The first time I encountered that type of filtering was when it was possible to do on ZSNES with the whole "2XSAI" thing. I've never ever liked how it looks. I find pixels to be far more aesthetically pleasing than the look that the HQx gives it. I would go so far to say that it looks awful. I guess it's the awkwardness that comes with turning something that was intentionally pixelated into something that pretends its not. However, now that I'm thinking about it, the one big drawback that I encountered with pixels was with Mode 7 graphics in the SNES. When that shit got big and "close" to the screen, it looked like garbage. What would Mode 7 graphics look like in HQx? All of that being said, I continue to appreciate the work you're doing, Mister Epic!

Dooty, have you tried hexediting so that you enter the level later? (The entire level mind you, not just the bonus barrel). I used to have to do this to manipulate the bananas on a few stages. It usually worked by waiting around 20 frames, sometimes less, sometimes a lot more (which was only helpful in cases where the bonus absolutely sucked in terms of luck, like the Springin' Spiders one).

An update: I reached the boss of Level 5, but I stumbled upon a trick that will let me save time on horizontal rope segments, meaning I'll have to redo a lot of earlier sections. Hopefully this doesn't give me too much grief. As for progress, I'm currently 56 frames ahead of the published run! Also, I figured out how to skip the escalator, but to my major annoyance I couldn't skip any of the fan segments. I was VERY close to skipping some of them (as in, I can almost jump in between / over / under several of them) but I've resigned myself to the fact that it's just not possible.

I've never seen this game before, but it was fun to watch you tear through those obstacles. I especially like the MIB style ceiling action and the ridiculous jumps. Voting Yes.

Snot a Problem! is complete, and it turned out to be less of a hassle once I realized something: Major Mucus is only considered killed when he lands in the snot and can only fall so fast, meaning I can snap his bungee cord at any time between the beginning of the round and when he starts to slow down at the bottom. This enacts a sort of "frame rule" where I have a comfortable window of time in which to manipulate him. To reinforce this, take a look at how fast M. Mucus is killed in the first round compared to the third. Despite this difference, both rounds are 319 frames long. Link to video

While Donkey Kong Country 3 is a hot topic right now, I wonder if ElectroSpecter is still considering on finishing that any% WIP. I would love to try out TASing this series some day and maybe consider continuing the improvement. Anyways, Im watching that full game WIP, and it is awesome. Please for the love of god, finish this Dooty.
Sonik, my published run of the any% is definitely improvable by a bit, if you were interested at ever taking a crack at it.

Dooty, maybe it has something to do with resetting too soon after the first ending? Let the first ending play out completely and see what happens to the % score.

The new Bear Coin list is done. I hadn't realized it before, but the coins in Kong-Fused Kliffs still take 0 frames to get, as we have to wait for the rope to burn anyway. The coins you collected, Dooty, are all optimal except for one case: Instead of getting the coin in Ropey Rumpus, which takes like 35 frames or something, get the one in Tyrant Twin Tussle, that I mentioned before that takes 10 frames. Otherwise, our lists are exactly the same! As a small aside note, we could get the coin in Doorstop Dash above the sandbags instead of getting either one of these two: - The Murky Mill coin or - the first coin in Konveyor Rope since they all take ~14 frames to collect. I believe this would be a good decision so that viewers aren't left scratching their heads about why we didn't collect a coin that looks like it would be fast to grab. In light of this new shit and me realizing that the Kong Fused Kliff coins don't take any frames to get, about 130 frames are used up total in the entire run collecting coins. The Bazaar trick almost definitely takes longer than that, so that's probably out.

Yes, you're right, just Boomer will benefit from this trick, since we must enter his hut more than once anyway.

exit the second bonus with Squitter or Squawlks, pass the no animal sign a little higer and then hover above Ellie's barrel, but there's no way to do this stage without Ellie.
First off, the Bear Coin issue: Toothache, that list is quite inaccurate at this stage in the TAS. Many new tricks and different strategies have eliminated several of the coins that take 0 frames to collect. Dooty, we shouldn't say that it's completely out of the question to do the Bazaar trick, as many of the new Bear Coins we have to get take a substantial amount of time to collect. Once the list has been finalized (which will be soon), we can compare it with how long it takes to do the Bazaar trick. Also, you can skip the Ellie barrel without animals ;)

about Boomer, it's possible to pay for the last explosion the same way; exit before the counter reaches zero.
That's actually pretty interesting, it would save you from having to head back after completing Swoopy Salvo, right? Also, the stuff I mentioned in a previous post but got bumped back a page too soon:

A couple very interesting discoveries: BEAR COINS: Watch 7E05C9 (the bear coin address) closely when buying items from Bazaar. In the test run, the game attempts to take all 55 away, but gets cut off at 8 when you leave the cabin! This means that we only have to get 50 bear coins in the run, and the new trick would go something like this: Enter Bazaar Bear's at the end, purchase the mirror, and leave quickly so that you're left with 8 coins. Re-enter and buy the shell! (Remind you of Link's Awakening?) TRIGGERING ENDING 2: Dooty, After some testing, I'm assuming you encountered the glitch where the game freezes if you try to enter a different Wrinkly's Cave. The fix for this would be to save just one time at any point in the run (probably fastest to do this right at the beginning when you enter her cave automatically). This will prevent the freeze from happening and you can just enter Wrinkly's Cave in Mekanos instead of returning the Gyrocopter and stuff.

Some notes as I'm watching: - Awesome idea in Konveyor Rope, getting hit so that Kiddie can plow through all those bees! - Pretty decent luck on Creepy Caverns. Hopefully it will be the same in the final run. - I love the DK coin grab in poisonous pipeline! - Did you figure out how to skip the Ellie barrel in Stampede Sprint? Too bad it's not useful for a couple different reasons (the main one being that the camera won't scroll). - YES! You got Tompa's team throw theory to work in Criss Kross Cliffs! - The bear coin in the bird after the Squitter barrel only takes 11 frames to get I believe, but my Bear Coin list needs some adjustments after watching this. - HAHA what the hell did you do to Boomer? - You don't need to go back to the first Wrinkly's Cave to trigger the 2nd ending, you can just go into the one in Mekanos I think. - Yes, stupidly, 3% of the game is attained by going to Swanky's. I never knew this. (You don't need to actually play any games). - Also, after your movie file ended and I went into Swanky's I had 6 bear coins. I wasn't paying too much attention to WHY though, so I should look into this. Overall, awesome!
