Regarding SMW, I'm talking about done on a real console. I'm too lazy to find the link, it was just something that I read on the SDA forums once. There was no proof offered, and it probably occurred during a rant against emulated runs. ;) I've never heard SMB3, plus it makes no sense. I'm a skeptic, but SMW is theoretically possible since it's pretty easy to be perfect most of the levels. My original statement was actually supposed to be tongue in cheek, but hey, I guess that's what emoticons are for online.

That's a glitch? I thought that was the whole challenge of the battle, why else does the slime do nothing but heal your party? (I seem to remember finally beating myself/it, getting whatever item it had, but then being stuck on that floor with no way out of the dungeon.)
I agree with you that this is not a glitch. I compare it to sitting around vs Gogo in FF5, but more clever (also more dangerous to whoever tried it first!). Not only does he heal you, he "wins" the fight by killing himself at the start of turn 4. This is all obviously intentional. You use the item Providence to leave the Ancient Cave. Edit:
BoltR wrote:
To have a chance of taking off enough damage against the super slime at the end you more or less need to kill every monster in the dungeon, which would not be interesting at all to see.
If you know what you're doing, you can legitimately (double meaning) kill the slime the first run through the dungeon without killing all the enemies. Actually, yes, an AC run would be a bit boring, but nothing as bad as DW1 or others. Plus, it would be really short and interesting for casual Lufia 2 fans to learn they can kill themselves, that you don't need a full party, that the Master Jelly drops Providence, and to see the unglitched final floor. I would actually prefer to do a clean Gift mode legit run, as I'm very sure I have a strategy that would be ridiculously faster than what people (and by this I mean GameFAQs board members) have been doing. However, I'm sure I couldn't bear to stomach the high level of randomness that would ensue. Also, as a side note, not sure if people realize this, but the floors aren't randomly generated, just randomly selected out of the choices for each floor. If it were actually random, it would be pretty juiced, don't you think?

Here are some more suggestions: Evo (Upon finding this site, I was very surprised this didn't exist. I am not as big a fan of this game, while good, as many other people, but it would make a really good run I think.) Alcahest (decent game, good run choice) Castlevania 5 (not as good as 4, but it's Castlevania) Harvest Moon Der Langrisser (and really I sneakily mean Warsong 2 for Genesis) Lemmings 2 (not as good as PC version, but it's on SNES) Mega Man Soccer (game kinda sucks, but for the MM completionism I guess) Geomon 2-4 (not as good as 1 strangely, but better than the 64 SDA one heh) Mario and Wario Parodius 1/2/3? Star Fox Twinbee 4/5 (actually, how does this site not have any Twinbees to begin with?!) Valis 4 (and by this I mean 1-4 on various Sega-ness) Ys3 (and by this... ;) RPGs: ones that have been mentioned elsewhere, but good games I haven't heard talk of include Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Romancing Saga (especially 3), DW 5/6, eh that's all I can think of. --- Rockman & Forte is an obvious choice, since every other Mega Man game possible is already done on this site (minus the weird ones like the soccer!). Yoshi's Island already has very good legit videos at SDA. Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma: sure, if someone would want to do those. FFMQ: for whoever is doing this, make sure you avoid all the enemies you can. There are some places where the designers got lazy in their enemy placement and you're clearly supposed to have to fight them, but you can walk around them. This happens around stairs for example. Zelda 3: the run at SDA is really good if I remember right. SMW full: the thing that bothers me about this game is that the game is pretty easy as is and harder to optimize. For instance, the run we have here is slower than people can do it legitimately, apparently. Mario Kart: I LOVE this game, think it's the best racing game ever, spent much time on it, am quite good at it. That being said, I don't want to see speedruns for this since legit playing is already very optimized as is. Secret of Mana: the only rationale I could think of is that it would be pretty neat to see the first ever 3P speedrun here. I'm not sure I would really want to watch it otherwise. Kirby 3, SmashTV, Puzzle Bobble, DKC2/3: solid ideas Lost Vikings 2: this is a great idea, plus we already have 1 (for Genesis) Mario is Missing: eh, it's a Mario game SD3: IMHO Square's best game ever, but not sure how good of a run it would make. I beat the game in level 31, not sure how often I fought regular enemies but it was pretty close to not at all. This would have to be done 2P, of course. Lufia 2: this would be incredible. Someone needs to do this. Since the Japanese version would probably be used, it would be nice for the USA players to get to see an unglitched version of the game.

I haven't found exactly why Koopa Troopa is rated so highly among fans. I know he's got good speed, and his acceleration is better than Bowser and DKJ. Basically, he's not as fast as Bowser, but he doesn't lose as much speed going around turns.
It's because his handle is the best. I've found that newbies tend to like Princess/Yoshi, decent players like Toad/Koopa, and good players like Bowser/DK.

yea i know the later ones (Lufia) were made by different people, but you'd think they could try some of the game mechanics that works so well in the second one. I mean the story did nothing for me in 3, so much so that i didn't bother finishing it because of the annoying dungeons. I'm not that far into 4 yet, but I haven't heard good things about it, so i'm not looking for anything.
Really, as I said earlier, I think the problem is actually that they tried too hard to reuse some of the earlier game mechanics. For example, everyone thought the Ancient Cave was an amazing idea and so much fun in Lufia 2. So the developers thought, what if we made a whole game with randomized dungeons? Well, without the carefully designed puzzles and dungeons to act as a foil to the random dungeon, it got old and made no sense to use in the main game. The execution, of course, was also a big issue. Reusing the capsule monster idea was also considered to be a failure, although unfortunately, this was probably due to the Pokemon phenomenon in between.

Doesn't Lufia II have that special 100 floor dungeon? I'd like to see a run through that. IIRC, it doesn't matter what you have when you enter the dungeon, because you start off at lvl 1 essentially naked. So you can likely start from a save state at the island, and do the dungeon from there. Also, isn't there a "new game +" in Lufia II that gives bonus XP? It starts out just like a virgin game, but all the battles give 4 times the XP I think. That would definately make for a faster run, but would likely require starting from a save state (the game has to be beaten once). I'm not sure if the boosted XP run works in the 100 floor dungeon, but IMO that would be the L2 run to do.
There are 3 modes: Start, Retry, and Gift. Start is like a normal game. Beating it unlocks Retry, which is the same but with 4x XP. Beating Retry unlocks Gift, which starts you off in Gruberik (the Ancient Cave town) and allows for AC runs with any party you like. You can go through Lufia 2 anyway without leveling, so a Retry speedrun would be pretty pointless compared to a pure normal run. Since runs must be made from reset, the Gift mode is perfect for the AC. In fact, it's amazing you said this, since I was actually planning an AC run. (It might not look anything like what you might be expecting, though.) I would have liked to keep this under wraps until I did it, but I figured before I wasted my time I would like to know if Bisqwit would approve of it. While beating the Master Jelly at the bottom floor of the Ancient Cave does not end the normal game itself, the Ancient Cave is like a self-contained game within the bigger game. I would try to argue that beating the AC has a more defined ending compared to, say, a no sword Zelda run or Super Metroid no-boss run. I would ideally prefer an AC speedrun to start with Gift mode and end with putting the Master Jelly on display in the basement. Bisqwit, or some higher-up, if you're reading this, what do you think? On a side note, I wonder how fast anyone can do the World's Most Difficult Trick? I have a ZMV, I think from Zophar, of someone doing this.

I could not possibly agree with this more. In fact, I would say in this era (before being able to play Japanese SNES RPGs emulated), these would be my two favorite series.
TheAxeMan wrote:
Breath of Fire 1 and 2 Well, these would both be very long, but there are some interesting tricks possible. In BOF2, one of the allies has an overworld ability which would allow you to bypass random encounters. Also, to get the best ending or not?
In BoF1, you can also use Mrbl3s I think, to avoid encounters. Rand abuse in BoF2 would be pretty sweet, you're right. I don't think getting the best ending adds an appreciable time, so I'd say go for it. I don't know how much leveling would be required for speedruns here, and I also don't have a general guideline as to how long these games take (since I don't see a timer anywhere), but I do know that I can end with Ryu in level 23 in BoF1 and level 26 in BoF2. From an offensive standpoint, with some of the constant damage through items and dragons in these games, low levels are more feasible, but luck manipulation might be less useful.
TheAxeMan wrote:
Lufia 1 and 2 The first one is a pretty simple game, and there is a cheap item that reduces enemy encounters. The second has no random encounters, battles are entered like Mystic Quest.
With luck manipulation, I can get to the Sinistrals in level 26 and under. However, Gades tears me a new ass. I don't have my original cart here with me, so I don't know what level I was able to beat it at legitimately. Lufia 2, although one of my favorite games ever, has the one flaw of being all downhill in difficulty after Maxim and Selan vs Idura, and nonexistant after the 2 Lions, so levels are not an issue there. Although I do have beef with your Mystic Quest comment. The battles are actually more like the complete opposite. In MQ, you must fight most enemies since they are camped in your path, while in Lufia 2, you can stun them and walk around them, avoiding almost regular encounters if you wish. Not to mention the quality of the games is completely opposite. ;) I've skeptically heard some good things about Paladin Quest, so despite the goofy name I might put it on the back burner. =p Phantasy Star: we can wish, but that'll be the day. =/

Being a huge Lufia fan, I had almost finished repressing 3 and 4, which defines mediocrity, out of my memory. Did you know that after Lufia 2, Neverland, the developer, went bankrupt? If you knew that 3 and 4 were done by different people, would that give you a new perspective? As for the GBA BoFs, I can understand if you don't have the original SNES carts, but they really nuked the difficulty, so I would recommend the original versions.

On the other hand, Lufia, Terranigma, BoF 1, Bahamut Lagoon and the FF's didn't do anything for me. They were OK, but hardly very memorable.
If you've played Lufia 1 but not 2, please check it out, because it is much different. IMHO the difference in quality is like that between FFMQ and FF6, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma, SD2 and SD3, TO:KoL and TO:LUCT, or FFTA and FFT, as general guidelines. BoF2 compared to BoF1 is also true, but to a lesser extent. I can (with varying degrees of willpower) buy the games you've listed as not being memorable, but I wouldn't for Lufia 2 or BoF2. Although I am not a big story guy myself, without spoilers Lufia 2 has very unique plotpoints at midway and the ending, and BoF2 was basically ushered in a plotpoint which, well, wouldn't be very memorable today, but certainly was at the time. Although, thinking of Lufia 1, I agree much of the plot was drab, but wasn't there the best plot twist in an RPG ever in this game? --- For my money, ToP is by far the most advanced (as to be out-of-place) game for its time, at least on the SNES. Also, ZSNES can play SO1 without graphics packs now, but it still can't rerecord. ;) About ToS, does anyone get a sort of empty feeling with all the rehash compared to the amazing feeling you got when you played ToP the first time? In series with mass developer exodus (Tales after ToP, Ogre series after TO:LUCT, Lufia after Lufia 2), I've noticed, the people left behind seem to be more concerned with maintaining the status quo rather than innovating. Tri-ace has gone on to be amazing, Quest less so (still hopeful for FF12 though), but at least Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, and Vagrant Story are different. Tales, while good, is still just Tales.

Yeah, I meant easytype, which is the same as what you were doing. I wound up with about the same amount of time as you did (0:58-0:59), so maybe my strategy isn't really any better than yours, but basically what I did was levelled up Rydia a little bit between when I get Tellah in the waterfall cave and the save point where the tent cutscene occurs.. just enough to get high enough level for Rydia to use Lit-2. I would then use the extra MP Rydia gains for extra chocobo summons, which would make the Octomamm, Antlion (it can't counterattack magic, and Chocobo summon is your strongest weapon), and MomBomb fights faster.
I've been working a little more on this, and since you were right about harvesting globes, I decided to check this out since it does seem faster. I assume you mean Lit-1 since Rydia doesn't get Lit-2 until she's older. Since you have a little bit of area in between Tellah and the tent scene, you can level her up to 5 in 3-4 fights, all of which should be won with 1 Tellah spell. The thing is, when I did it this way, I got 0:59 for Paladin, and if anything, I killed Milon a little faster than normal. It's been a while, so I went back immediately and did it with no leveling and got 0:58 again. So I think not leveling is better. The thing is, with no leveling, Octomamm is a bit slower, but Antlion and Mombomb is basically no difference, meaning Rydia doesn't run out of MP. I pick up these chests: Cure1 near the end of the Mist Cave, Ether1 in a pot near Rosa, and Darkness and another Ether1 near the end of the Waterfall. Rydia gets off a Chocobo during the Octomamm fight. After the battle, use the Cure1 and Rydia's last MP to cure Cecil and Rydia once, and the Ether1 to bring her up to max. During the Antlion fight, Edward uses the last Ether1 on Rydia, letting her Chocobo some more. Speaking of Chocobos, I ride a Yellow outside Baron, a Yellow back from Mt. Ordeal, and the Black. I also forgot to say earlier that I set my speeds to 1 in config and Warp/Exit out of everywhere possible, both of which should be obvious enough. Finally, you can get to Paladinhood with only having to set your Form once, if you put Rydia in the back in the 1st position and Cecil in the 2nd position as soon as you get her. Everything else just happens to fall into place somehow.
Tilus wrote:
The rest of the game, though, your strategy is almost certainly better than what my idea would've been (which is to level Cecil a little coming down Mt. Ordeals, live on that until you get to the Tower of Bab-il and harvest monsters off an Alarm there, then use that EXP to cruise until the Giant, where you harvest Attackers/Defenders until you're high enough level to beat the game).
Yeah, my RPG run philosophy has always been to only level up when absolutely necessary, and this works for most cases. I need to fully realize this is a tool-assisted speedrun and not a low level legit run. With luck manipulation, you can end every battle with exactly who you want to survive and get better level-ups that way. Also, again with luck manipulation, I managed to beat the Elements without leveling (I had a save there), so that would save a good bit of time. Basically, if it were possible to do the whole game without leveling, that would be optimal, but I think some amount of globe harvesting is necessary to survive Big Bang. Giving everyone Jump, I managed to beat Ex-death in FF5 with min levels and no chemist/whatever abuse (because I didn't know you could heh), but sadly I don't think keeping Kain forever in the air here would be feasible or even a good idea. Since I just remembered and I can't think of anywhere better to put this, I'm unsure as to whether or not it's really best to get Rydia's Tiara, get/dupe/sell?/dart Excaliburs, and buy Summoned Monsters/Dwarf Town equipment given that you could luck manipulate. I'm guessing the answer is still yes for the Excaliburs (this depends on what level you end up in after globe harvesting, which I don't know), most likely not for the Tiara (kill bosses by tanking until you can just buy 2), and a hesitant probably for the other gear.
Tilus wrote:
But 4 hours to beat all of FF4.. I'm impressed. The cheat-filled "walkthrough movie" on zophar, which disables all random combat and cheats to obliterate bosses as fast as possible, is about 3 hours long, so that's not a whole lot of extra time you spend to build up legitly. I'll be looking forward to this movie.
Thanks for the kind words, but I doubt I'll be doing this speedrun any time soon. I have a lot of coursework this semester, but more importantly, just messing around with this again reminded me of just how annoying this is. The first time, it was still somewhat annoying but kinda cool, since I was doing it on a console and I didn't know if it was feasible to make such a low level run. Throw in luck manipulation, and the fact that I've done this game too much before, and it starts to feel like work instead of play, which I could be doing instead. So I'm putting this on the backburner. I've never recorded any runs before, and besides having to deal with the logistics for the first time, I wish either ZSNES would get rerecording or Snes9x would get some of the features I'm used to. (Not to be taken as a complaint, though, keep up the good work guys!) My current speedrunning agenda would look like this: secret SNES RPG idea that wouldn't be as annoying to do Breath of Fire 5 Ico Ogre Battle FF2 Although there are still games I haven't played yet that would take precedent over speedrunning of course. "Thankfully" though, the only PS2 games in the pipeline I'm really interested in are Radiata Stories and Wanda and the Collosus, and neither is even out yet in Japan, so I might have more time in the future. I don't have a Gamecube, but if I ever got access to one I'm pretty sure my running days would be over. =p Anyway, my main objective was to get my FF2 speedrun ideas out for anyone else who was planning such a thing. As DukeNukem007 said, the Japanese dialog probably takes less space anyway, and you have already started, so I think I'll be looking forward to your movie! ;) "Thank you for your reading!"

What kind of time do you usually make it to achieving Paladinhood with Cecil at? (Just checking, since I've attempted a speedrun of FF4 as well, and there are a couple things I did differently which may make it slightly faster than your version up to this point). Also, in the Giant, what kind of dragons does the Searcher summon? If it were Red Ds or Blue Ds or some other dragon that gives 20000+ EXP/kill I could understand this being the fastest way, but if not, then why not harvest Attackers/Defenders off the CPU? They give 50000 EXP each and can be killed fairly quickly as well.
Dunno how FF2 and FF4 stack up, but I'll assume you mean EasyType here so we don't have apples and oranges. I have 0:58 for Padalin Cecil. I would like to hear what you've done differently, so we can try to optimize this. ;) I had to actually load a ZST up to look, but... D. Machines. =/ Looking at an FAQ, a D. Machine is 8300 compared to 25000 for an Attacker/Defender. I just did some testing (with already leveled characters though, which might affect the globe value) and one D. Machine iteration is about 20 secs, and one Recover iteration is about 1 minute. So it would appear that globe killing is twice as fast, but I first need to level to get past the Elements. There are confusing pros and cons each way, but now I think it would be best to harvest D. Machines once, or until you can get past the Elements, and then harvest globes. There's a lot more dying going on this way, but as long as you have very many Life and Cure2 potions, it shouldn't be too bad because you have the slight down time between killing the globes and I-99 to catch up. Don't know what level you'd end up in, but like I said, shoot for the low 40s here.

Or, maybe massive luck manipulation to prevent Asura from using Cure 4. It's still probably not worth the time either way though, if the whole summoned monsters cave is optional.
Thanks for your input in general, nitsuja, but many of your ideas pertain to FF4 instead of 2US, so maybe they'd fit better in the other thread? ;) I have played through FF4 English patch, so I agree that it's a slightly better game playing normally, but since FF2 is cleaner, I think it might actually make for a more interesting run. FF5 already has the broken-ness quotient down pat. I'm really not sure which would be quicker, but they're two different games and who says there can't be a run for each? About luck manipulation, this isn't Dragon Warrior; there's just some things that I'm pretty sure just can't be done. Asura always casts Cure4, Cure3, Life1, repeat. Also, at low levels, Kain really just isn't fast enough, like I said.

It's not actually a difficult game, it's just extremely poorly documented and there's a whole bunch of misconceptions floating around about it gamewise, which matters even more here because the battle system is so different. Using no guides, I beat it without any deaths the first time, with a whole lot of almost-dying drama. My brother beat it relatively easily the first time without any deaths. Basically, the "you must die and restart" thing is a myth. I can see how dying and restarting would hamper your enjoyment of a game though obviously. I guess I lucked out and got maximum enjoyment!

One thing I forgot about. Does the PS version have Easy Type? Because since you can run on that version I've heard, that would potentially be the fastest. Easy Type is a must for Cecil's auto-cover, by the way. And sorry, but I definitely don't have the time to undertake this, but I hope I've been helpful in layout out the framework. If I'm going to do an emu speedrun, it'll be something on a much smaller scale. I actually have something in mind, but I'll keep it a secret until I actually do it I guess. ;)

Be forewarned, it's been a long time since I've played this game, so I might say something stupid or leave something important out. Feel free to hammer away with the questions! Also, for anyone wanting to speedrun this, reading the algorithms guide on Gamefaqs is a must. In fact, I haven't done so myself in a long while, so hopefully I don't say anything wrong. First and foremost, I believe that from a speed standpoint, leveling up is a waste of time. In many RPGs, it will help you win faster but I think the difference here is more than lost by the time it takes to do so. Leveling up is only needed near the end of the game. I'll say where I think levelling should happen. In general, it's a waste of time to buy any equipment. Armor tends to do stuff like improve your defense by 1 in this game. I'll mention any time I feel it would help to buy something. Curative items, like in any Square game and most RPGs in general, are ridiculous, so you'll want to spend your money on that. Mostly Life potions, as we'll get to later. Picking up chests for the most part is also wasteful, of course. It's cool to disequip people right before they leave, but I can't recall if it's ever actually beneficial. I'll assume it's not, although I did it when I was playing quickly. The Float trick and the equip a shield trick don't come into play here. Keep in mind that this is from a legitimate speedrun perspective. And off we go... I would first like to get this out of the way and say that while it's not worth the time to do just this, Kain should typically be placed in the back row if possible since it doesn't affect his Jump. If you have the need, however, place him in the front with 3 back people for even more aggregate damage reduction. I typically get the Black Sword or whatever in the caves; it's right in the way. When you get to Octomamm, let Rydia get off all the Chocobos she can before she dies. It's not worth reviving her. (If she somehow survives long enough, start using the Rod.) However, you'll want to have Tellah Life1 her during the vacuous part at the end. This is to make Antlion quicker with more Chocobos. During Antlion, Cecil should attack for speed. Edward is Operation Human Shield. I think I've actually had him die to the upcoming Water Hag. Against Milon and friends, focus on Milon with Cecil and Tellah. One Twin should take care of all the zombies. Don't heal him either, luckily for Cecil and his dark sword he's not undead yet. Against Milon Z, don't forget to swap your ranks! I think healing him works here but it's probably not worth it since the others have Fire and someone needs to heal. For the Dark Knight, just sit there. Sadly, Yang is really tough at low levels. The quickest and easiest way to win this fight is not to kill or even attack him. Have everyone focus on staying alive, including Cecil with his Cure2. After Yang attacks you the third time, you can hit him once with Cecil and he'll "come to his senses." I don't remember Baigan too well but I think Twin is good versus his Wall. For Kainazzo, his Big Wave will wreck your team, so the Lits need to be timed so this never happens. If you can pull that off, he dies incredibly fast. Now we get to do some stuff with the Airship. The only thing I can think of is to go to Rydia's house and get the gear, namely the Tiara. I think the rod might be worth it too for any extra magic damage? I mean, it's right there. In the magnetic cave, don't bother with any of the unequipping stuff, of course. When Dark Elf goes "ME CHANGE!", use Weak on the Dark Dragon and bash his face. When I went through the game, I didn't do this, but in retrospect I recommend getting weapons in the Tower of Zot for Cecil and probably Cid. I know when getting the sword for Cecil, you fight guys who die easily to Ice3, and if and only if the same is true for Cid I'd do the same. The Magus Sisters is the first place you need a bit of luck to go quickly, and lack of bad luck if you want to not die. You basically need Tellah to Whatever3 whoever has Wall and hope it hits the fat one. Twice would be nice as well. If you proceed like this, Valvalis is finally where you hit the brick wall level wise. However, this is where I figured out the tanking strategy that will be very useful for the rest of the game. Kain is your savior for this fight, but not because of "Jump, Kain!" It's because the evil baddies deemed fit for Kain to receive uber-gear. What you do is you immediately put all this insane armor on Cecil. Optimally, you would put him in the back, but for a speedrun it's best to put Kain in the back for 4x beatdown. Anyway, the only person you heal is Cecil. Whenever someone else dies, they get a Life potion. Basically, it gets to the point where Cecil Covers for everyone if you keep him at enough health. Now you can beat Valvalis, because she never targets more than one character at a time. She doesn't use Storm this fight but if she did, we'd be well prepared. ;) While fighting Calbrena, it is important not to let them combine or you will not be able to do enough damage and go into an iterative loop. If I remember correctly, you should kill 2 of the easy front ones, then 2 of the back ones, then injure the last back one, and then kill them both really quickly before they can combine. The end of this fight also allows you to cure Cecil to the max, because he'll need it. Try to get Kain to Jump against Golbez, but in my experience he is simply not fast enough. When Rydia comes, use her to Life people, starting with Kain, who should Jump repeatedly. Cecil can attack if he has the opportunity but I seem to remember him having to Life people as well. When you win, it is important to use Warp immediately and get the Dark Crystal. Dr. Lugae and the whole next tower is strangely a pushover even at low levels. I can't remember if there are any special tricks to beating him quickly, but I think if you just sit there and let Balnab explode that's better than trying in vain to kill him first. I forget if you have Bersk now, but Lugae sucks, so it would be a good idea here. Before fighting Edge's parents, get the treasure chest to the left, because I remember it's got LOTS of money. While fighting, just sit there to speed it up. Don't worry about healing, Rubicant's got you covered. Now most people think Rubicant is hard, but the truth of the matter is, like Behemoths, he mostly counterattacks, and with AE moves, which kill the tanking strategy. Rosa heals, Kain Jumps, Edge and Rydia hit him with Flood and Ice2 respectively. Now here's the key: Cecil can't either attack or parry, for tanking purposes, so sometimes you just gotta cast Cure1 or something. Because he's not attacking, feel free to put Cecil in the back along with Rosa and Rydia. Now is where the game finally gets a bit non-linear. Also, we can now buy our final equipment with all the money we have. First go to the Sealed Cave and then go to the moon and come right back, for Excalibur reasons. Now go through the Cave of Summoned Monsters and don't heal from the damage tiles. Get the rat tail, and buy 2 Aegis Shields and the Summoner's Robe. In the dwarf town, buy 1 Gauntlet, 2 Rings, 1 Tiara, 1 Diamond Armor, and 1 Diamond Helmet. I think that's about right, I just looked at some ZSTs to try to figure out what I did. Now make the Excalibur. Now make some more. Outside Baron is the best place for the dupe trick. Because your guys are at 1 from the tiles, non-Cecil people can kill themselves off and it'll go by blazingly quick. I made 20 and won with 7, so 15 sounds like a nice number. I don't think any need to be made for money. I can't remember if I used them or Edge's magic against the Elements, but I'm getting ahead of myself. I will say that Edge should now typically be in the back row for Darting, given his poor defense. Get FuSoYa. Rosa will then pimp him and take all his gear. Now in the Giant is where you want to finally level, so I guess the fact that you couldn't beat the Elements at this stage is irrelevant. Go to the save point and walk around. You are looking for those alerter guys, who summon dragons. Harvest dragons really quickly by using FuSoYa's Weak. If the timing is impeccable then the dragons won't even get to do anything; otherwise, they hurt you and you need to heal. When FuSoYa is low on MP have him Psych from your teammates. Whenever you run out of MP, go ahead and win the fight. You should level like a madman. I stopped when my guys got up to the low 40s. This took 2-3 harvests. Now you can bash the Elements with all your elemental damage and decent stats and such, although Rydia didn't even have all the 3s yet for me. Against the CPU, you'll want to win the aggro way of course. I typically have FuSoYa start off with Meteo, Bersk Cecil, have Rydia use Titan, and Edge Dart of course. Titan should activate after awhile and kill the two little globes. Meteo should go off soon after for the win. Now we have our final party. I have Kain in the front so Edge and the girls can be in the back. In the Lunar Subterranean, the chests we want are the Dragoon stuff, the Protect Ring, and the White Robe, chests without monsters. Once we get all this we can go to the menu and setup. I have Rydia: Charm, null, Tiara, Sorcerer, Diamond; Kain: Aegis, Gungnir, Diamond, Dragoon, Dragoon; Rosa: Lunar, null, Tiara, Sorcerer, Protect; Cecil: Excalbur, Aegis, Dragoon, White (yes!), Samurai; Edge: Middle, Middle, Samurai, Samurai, Diamond (Ring). I have tested and I'm pretty sure that physical defense does not matter at this point. This is where I confess that Rydia, although my favorite character in a typical game, is complete dead weight. Zeromus counters with Nuke, which is not worth the trouble. Big Bang almost always kills her, even from full HP. In fact, sometimes Edge can die from full as well, and occasionally Rosa, in which case you lose. Before you use the Crystal, I typically have Rosa buff up Edge with Fast, but I don't know whether or not it is worth it because Zeromus just deactivates buffs later. Anyway, a lot of Attack, Jump, Dart, Cure4 happens. It's mainly a war of attrition. When he gets into his Meteo stage, you are home free, in the grand Square tradition of ending the final battle on a low dramatic note, a la Kefka being much easier than the other stages in FF3. Whew.

Now before anyone gets on me for making a new thread, the other one is FF4. Think about it. Also it's buried and it seems kinda dead. I know this game pretty well, and I'd do a (legit) speedrun if I had the time. Playing on ZSNES with save states but without massive luck manipulation I can get to Zeromus in 3:58. On a console several years ago, I beat the game in under 6 hours, which is amusingly 2 hours better than the guy with the very smug FAQ on Gamefaqs. For anyone who would like to attempt a tool-assisted speedrun on this, I have a basic idea, which I will put in the next post. Keep in mind though, that with an emulator run, it's probably not optimal, but it's a start.

This is the best modern RPG I can think of for speedrunning purposes, and people who have played will know what I'm talking about. I never timed myself, but if I remember correctly from a long dead thread on Gamefaqs, from a clear save it should take a little over 2 hours? I'm just guessing really, so don't take my word for it, but that's a general estimate. Opinions vary as to how long a completely new game would take but it would have to work to get until SDA's limit I think. I would like to see what people think about this. [sidenote] This game is IMHO the best game on the PS2, but sadly it seems nobody has played it. If I had a penny every time someone told me they've played BoF games, but not 5, I'd have... a lot of pennies. It's the only RPG in forever where it feels like there were any rational design decisions made or playtesting put into it for gameplay balance. In addition, it has probably Iwata's best soundtrack ever, and at least his best since Tactics Ogre/FF Tactics. [/sidenote]

Many people think this is a landmark game, and it can be beaten pretty quickly, so I wonder why I haven't heard any talk about speedrunning this game. I know it's pretty linear but you can save time doing various things, and other games that are just as linear or longer have runs. I've beaten the game twice, playing quickly but not breakneck, getting to the last save point with the mace in 1:45. I didn't time it, but from there it's another 15 or so until you beat the game? I'd like to know what other people's times are for this.

Great site, I discovered it several months ago. As for the boards, I've just been lurking, since I was so busy last semester, but after seeing this and nobody responding I just had to rectify the situation. This comes from an RPG videos site that is more than alive and well. Go here. It's a good complement to this site since it's mostly newer systems as opposed to older, real as opposed to emulated, RPGs as opposed to platformers and such, and aesthetic forms as opposed to speedruns. I'll be pretty sad if everyone goes there just for this video; personally I'm not a fan of FF7, but I'll leave it at that since I don't want to start a flamewar. IMHO the most impressive videos are the Star Ocean 3 4262 hits, Valkyrie Profile 1.49 million damage in one hit, and the Xenosaga in 6 hours. Many of the jpgs are mindblowing as well.
