There are small improvements possible in almost every non-straightforward level. It's nice to have an extra (better) set of eyes, so thanks! Sending you an email in a sec.

hanzou: That's right, Yoshi isn't needed in that stage but because of CBA we want him anyway. Truncated: Flying is faster than hopping. Also, taking the green switch palace later is what I plan to do.

Hi everyone. Time to revive this topic. I've started a new 96 exit run of SMW, doing a level occasionally when I haven't had anything else to do. I've reached Donut Plains 1, the first crossroad, and what I want to know is if anything new has been thought of in this game. Things I'm interested in mainly include world map route changes and completely new strategies/routes in specific levels. I think I have most of the levels and improvements figured out but I'd like to hear any ideas you have. The plan for now is to follow the same route Viper7 did, except skipping Yoshi's Island 1 and YSP for later and finish Donut Plains 2b and Donut Secret 1b the first time around. Correct? Thanks for your help everybody. Also, please keep in mind that this will not be finished anytime soon, if ever.

Wow, I go away for two weeks and when I check this site this is already done? Very impressive. I'm in an internet cafe in Bangkok right now so I can't watch it, but it's on top of my list when I return home to Sweden tomorrow.

Good to have you back JXQ, the forums are empty without you :) Even though Super Metroid, along with Super Mario World, was what got me interested in TASing to begin with, I unfortunately don't know a single thing about this game. But good luck, It'll be great to see what you can do!

Just to clear up a few things: Yoshi does not run faster than Mario, they run equally fast. Yoshi does not fly faster than Mario, he flies slower (the same speed as running, and the same speed as Mario's spin flying). Yoshi flying with a blue shell is also as fast as running. The flying glitch with Yoshi as demonstrated by hanzou and JXQ lets Yoshi fly as fast as regular flying with Mario, however it's not possible in some levels (I think) and of course takes some time to set up, so I'm not sure how useful it would be. It's possible to remain flying like this and it can be maintained as long as needed. From what I understand you can not perform dives or X-spins without losing time and/or control though. My own thoughts is that a Yoshi run does not really belong on this site. I'm all for concept demos in general but TASing with Yoshi is incredibly boring, from my own experiences. You basically can't perform any tricks what so ever, and everything is slower. Edit: Also, regarding the statement that this would take skill to pull off, unless you're talking about a non-tool assisted run, the opposite is true. When you're riding Yoshi the game becomes much simpler, and most of the time optimizing things you normally can do is no longer possible, so it basically just becomes Yoshi's Island 2 over and over again (hold right and occasionally jump).

No I was the one who voted no. It was a misclick, so never mind it.

I definately think you should go with the fastest strategy, and I have no problems with a death in a run if that is indeed the best way.

Let me be the first to say what a great run this is, and I'm sorry for not being able to help out more. Awesome job.

From what I've understood this does not sound as "bad" as up+down/left+right, and considering that's legal I definately think this should be too.

I like your updates JXQ, but I think there might be alot of merit to not positing them either, maybe especially so in this case. I'm sure you'd produce an equally good movie with or without the help of xebra, and I'm guessing you won't be too disheartened by the 1 no-vote you'll recieve after submitting this, since you'll have lots of time to prepare for it :) Edit: Oh and xebra, just because I'm curious: Do you consider all the coins SprintGod misses the same way in his Sonic 3 movie to be mistakes as well? Did you consider voting no to his movie being published because of this? (If you did vote no, I apologize and you can ignore the second part of my question).

My opinion is that the goal should be to minimize the overall playing time. If slowing down a specific level to achieve this is necessary, I think that's what should be done. In JXQ's and mine's Super Demo World movie, there were a number of levels that could've been finished faster if we had spent lots of time backtracking on the worldmap to fetch various items in mushroom houses etc. I don't think this should be done unless it actually saves time.

Of course it's entirely up to you what to aim for in terms of style and frames etc, and it's good that everyone voices their opinion so you know what other people think, but fwiw my own opinion is that the frames you gain are much more important than making a jump look non-tool assisted. I also liked the slow running.

Wow, I had no idea you could find Yoshi in Desert Star World, I thought Yoshi only existed in mushroom houses, except for the baby Yoshi in Pipe World 5. What do you know :) The trouble would be getting Yoshi through Pipe Star World, he can't travel those pipes can he? I don't think I've ever actully had Yoshi when casually playing this game, maybe I should play it through with him sometime. Anyway, it sounds doubtful it would be faster anyway, but either way it's very cool.

Just making sure I understand how the fadeout works. After the countdown of the time bonus the game waits a fixed amount of time and then starts the fadeout, regardless of where Sonic is on (or off) the screen, correct?

Yeah when I had downloaded the avi I mentioned in the IRC channel how I was pressing tab after every single level and to skip certain things for probably 20 minutes straight. What a habit that had become.

You're right, that was a stupid thing to write. Although I did think that Thwomps were killable.

how did he kill the bowling ball exactly? o_O
When Mario is flying regularly (with his cape) and lands on the ground, for a short period of time he's just lying there, still in cape animation. During this time he can kill any enemies, including Blarrgs, sawblades, flames (as demonstrated in the Ice Castle boss fight) and, which I found out by accident, also the bowling balls.

Yes that is weird, I made a similar demo but you were quicker JXQ. The message box only makes the water disappear in the last room, not the first.

I don't entirely understand the trick from your description. If I understand correctly, Mario has his regular flight physics, but while riding Yoshi? And when pressing <- or ->, they turn around, but still remain in flight mode? So if you held <- for 11 frames to catch air, they would start flying in the opposite direction they were facing originally? Sounds weird. I'll check it out and see what I can find.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. The problem in that level is that the lava hill is so huge that Mario can't fly over it no matter what, the screen needs to be scrolled up. In the 120 exit run we used a vine in the reserve box to scroll the screen so the skull raft could be skipped. For a 15 exit run, no vine is avaliable, meaning Mario has to go on the raft for a while until he can take off right before the lava hill, which of course would make the screen scroll up. Having Yoshi wouldn't change the situation, since the waiting time before taking off (still right before the lava hill) would be the same. I'm not sure if I just said a bunch of things you already know, if so I apologize :)

I'm not saying I wouldn't like it if JXQ decided to take that up, but I think it'll be difficult to make that movie impressive.
