Good work so far! I'm currently recovering from an injury, and can't do any TASing work, but I have been doing some research with my own physical copy of the game. A few things I've found: 1. This isn't related to the research, but figured I'd get it out of the way: When I first became interested in this game, well before my injury, I made a WIP of my own and later dropped it and went back to lurking. Just based on a visual comparison, it seems to be saving frames over yours not counting the difference in filenames. Someone want to double check? 2. I'm fairly confident that the only difference between 100% (the stated goal) and any% is just doing the tutorial plus the silver and gold bonus levels on each stage. The fanfare at the end of each stage is the same length regardless of performance, and the only way to lose stars is to get a strike (which is slow, as you can't do anything except pause during its animation) and exceeding the initial time limit (which is really slow, five minutes per puzzle at minimum). Just figured I'd check, though. 3. I have a theory as to how the mechanic I'll call "tunnelling" works. As you've seen, tapping each block individually to break it is slower than one might expect because it's throttled (unless maybe blocks are tapped in a zig-zag motion, so the block breaking animation doesn't get in the way? someone check that for me). However, if you do a long press on a block in break mode, you enter what I'll call "tunnelling mode", where blocks break pretty much as soon as you drag over them if they're in the row or column selected, and do nothing otherwise. You do not need to drag over all the blocks you want to break in any specific order, and you can drag over blocks not in the selected row or column without breaking them. The game selects a row or column apparently via a combination of the specific block on which the long press was done, and whichever dimension (width, height, or depth) most closely aligns with the direction pointing from the camera "into" the screen. (A RAM watch would be useful here, though I have no idea how to find the address in question.) This mode ends once the stylus is released from the screen. I suspect this will be very useful all over the place for breaking blocks faster than individual taps would, though one has to account for the time cost of moving the camera if needed to set this up and the long press in the first place. I suspect it's faster overall for any row or column where you need to break at least maybe four blocks, though this needs testing; I suggest Easy level 1-D (accessible from the start of the game) as its leftmost column is nine blocks tall and only the topmost is filled (i.e. must not be broken). 4. Finally, sometimes it might be necessary to use the slicers to access blocks in the interior of a puzzle; but it seems like it is slower to finish a puzzle when "sliced in" as the game pauses for a moment to slice out before playing the level end fanfare. That's all I have for now; hopefully soon I'll be able to test some of those things in emulator and make a more complete WIP.

I haven't been able to test that yet, but I'll update the next time it decides to run smoothly. Edit: It ran smoothly again and I tested it. When fast forwarding, the game runs at about 100 fps when nothing much is happening (i.e. at the title screen) and wiggles between 80 and 90 fps at other times (i.e. during the demos that are played). Once in awhile it may spike up to 120 fps but that lasts half a second realtime at most. During actual gameplay it seems to peak at 75 fps.

The speed is set to 100%, and I have rebooted the core when switching between cores. I'm currently running with the Performance core, like I have most of the time, and right now it averages 30 frames per second; when it runs smoothly I believe it averages 60 fps although it may dip as low as 55. Now that I think about it, it seems to switch depending on either what day it is or the computer having been in sleep mode, although that may not be related. I say this because it seems that (as an example) no matter what I can think to do (which isn't much) the game runs at 33-35 fps at most, and then when I return the next day and try again it hits 60 fps easily without me having done anything, or at least noticing that I've done anything. Edit: I've rebooted earlier and tried putting the computer into sleep mode and waking it just now, and neither seemed to affect performance. Personally, I'm stumped.

Sometimes when I load Super Metroid, for casual gaming, it averages around 30fps, but other times it runs at a smooth 60. I am almost certain I'm not changing any settings between loads (of the emulator and of the game), and the settings I do change (performance vs compatibility core and ringbuffer IO) don't seem to help much. I'm running quad-core Windows 7 64bit with 8gb of RAM, on a laptop, with an Xbox 360 controller.

Sorry I haven't been for awhile, I just discovered the Backloggery and haven't been able to stop playing video games. I assure you I will work on it today, and hopefully get some serious progress done on it in the next couple of weeks. I also assure you that this isn't a quote.

No, it's M&L: Superstar Saga for the GBA, if you're talking about the M&L series. (Which is nonetheless very diffrent from this game, IIRC.)

Seeing as I MISSED the whole thing, I'm kind of baffled. However, I would like to say this website made me a better programmer, a better beta tester, a better engineer, and a better etc. I was inspired by Adelikat's Tasvideos Youtube video, which also gave me my "superhuman" powers of controlling my adrenaline (just think of that song, and BAM! I'm hyper) I guess I'll go watch a TAS now (sigh) (not that I feel bad or anything)

My weirdest dream: Me and my freind Brandon were at the beach (a REALLY small beach) with some other people who I later discovered were the characters from the Jimmy Neutron TV show. Then, for no apparent reason, Brandon stopped drinking his Icee and started inhaling like Bowser in Mario and Luigi 3. Needless to say, we were all sucked inside of him. Now, about this point in the dream I turn into just an onlooker (as if I was playing a video game). So, some Sheen clone and I think Carl fell into a giant vat of I think saliva (spit) (in 2D) with pieces of food in it, and the real Sheen was riding a McDonalds Chicken Nuggets box around the stomach (which had an upward entrance, no exit, a pothole window, and just generally looked like a yellow submarine). For absolutely no reason, I skipped ahead in the video (?) on Viddler (??) to skip a gross part where some yellow stuff (mustard?) fell on Sheen. Sheen turned into a fly, flew up the upward tube, and flew out of (guess who) a robot Jimmy attached to a wall serving food in a drive-thru at (guess where) McDonalds. Upon seeing Sheen, the Jimmy-robot told him he was busy, and instructed him to go back inside him. Either I can't remember the rest, or I woke up around that point. Influences: Hope for a playdate with Brandon (which is rare), a recent visit to Adventure Landing (I saw an Icee ad there), my begging Mom to buy me Mario and Luigi 3, my mom and my sister talking about the Jimmy Neutron TV show on my way to bed, my recent obsession with watching TASes on Viddler (embedded video hasn't been introduced yet), and us visiting McDonalds on the way home from church.

I don't think so(from what I've seen of the memory adresses) but it's hard to figure out both "Bros Movement" stats(memory values) BTW, thanks for the wch file! It's doing great things! I found out that during the "tutorial" part of the Bowser fight, Bowser's health is locked at 20. So I should intentionally fail some jumps to speed things up. EDIT: My new WIP is here!

Nvm, command prompt was looking at the wrong folder. It works fine now.

Yay, feedback! *stops acting lame* Well, the game seems to be really slow, and of course I have that graphics card problem... *cough*graphics card out of date*cough* So I've been working on a Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story TAS. (Among others)
