For this game it can work. But realtime is actually our "so common it's default" condition. All the rest SM runs are also "realtime", so it's not unique over them in that.
Right, I'm not suggesting any rule incorporate "realtime". I am saying that the guidelines should allow the labeling of the "unlabeled" run for the purpose of reducing confusion.
I'm also for this kind of label when there are many runs of the same game, and for the same reason, avoiding confusion. "So common it's default"... I was considering something like a "default run" label, but that's still not perfect in my opinion. I thought about "default", "basic", "classic", etc... All kind of labels, but they don't sound good enough. It has to tell that the run isn't doing something too extraordinary (compared to the others), and is the one to watch when looking for the "more normal" run of the bunch.

VVhat just happened? Look what you did to that poor game. It's...It's... It's beautiful :D And short enough to get my yes vote. That's the point, in fact, it's so short that I love it. (I'm talking about the run)

What I particularly liked in this movie is all the snaking you did to maintain max speed ;)

Aaaah... Now I remember having worked on this one! It's been a while and I thought it was cancelled. I was part of the ram watch team, we had a lot of fun participating in this project: Link to video

I've heard, err... read, sorry, on IRC that members could have access earlier to the new versions of BizHawk (and maybe other rerecording emulators). I'm not sûre if I understood it correctly because english is not my first language. Does it mean that the latest versions will be held back for some time for non "pro" TASers or something else? Maybe it was a joke, I didn't read the conversation from the beginning, that's why I'm asking here. If it's true, then mayyybe I'll consider getting the membership. Big maybe.

Knuckles has a very interesting moveset, that's what I like about this run, and the fact that it's yet another improvement. The best part for me is the shortcut to get to Cosmic Angel's boss (really) faster, that was the big surprise for me ^^. Bravo ;)

I'll consider both runs as one and just say: amazing job. It would be even better (in my opinion) if more levels didn't involve bouncing really fast to the goal, but the games are like that. There is still some variety.

Hi Ulfberth. I think you'll have better luck asking here, it's the french sub-forum of TASvideos, where everything is discussed in... French :p That way you can already find people who can speak french here. That doesn't mean that every french TASer of the site posted something there, or that everyone you'll see in this section is living in France, but that's a good starting point. See you later, I guess ^^ ---- Salut Ulfberth (encore). A bientôt, j'imagine ^^

I don't know what could have caused a desync. I guess you didn't use hex editing? (modifying some inputs directly in the movie file outside of the emulator, often used to copy/paste things like whole levels after going back to redo them). My guess is that you did it mostly in real time/slow motion, and the emulator had a problem at one point with the inputs or saving/loading a state. My solution to avoid it: always use frame advance, you'll theorically take 0 risk, evry time you'll save or load, the emulator will be paused, and it will also reduce very heavily the probability that for some reason, an input could be missed or weirdly interpreted. All I said was based on the assumption that VBA can have problems like that. I hope it helps...

That would be useful, but maybe very hard, to find what could have caused the desync. Or some way to fix it at least. Because you'll never know if it can happen again, and maybe with another of the 9 games. Imagine if, at the end, all of them (8 of them, technically) end up with a desync at one point in the run ^^. I think that's a big threat for the run, destroying the whole purpose, and the time spent on it. Edit: ouch, and you posted that while I was typing my post. Sorry to hear that what I feared really happened :(

Hey, Personman, I had the exact same idea after seeing adelikat's infinite run at the time :D (and learning about how he managed to loop the input sequence) It's all about finding the smallest list of inputs to loop in order to finish a game... But it would be a nightmare to do, because every little change like adding or removing inputs (changing the lenght of the loop when creating that "run") would really change everything for the whole run. I tried thinking about some genres where it would be "easier" and I still don't have a good idea, maybe a really simple shoot em up, or a shooter like Time Crisis, but a basic one (but that would be boring, it would just involve firing almost everywhere, the only difficulty could be bosses). It can be interesting with a platformer, you just have to find someone crazy enough to attempt it ^^.

Looks like Fei is a crazy old guy just playing around with the game's world :D It almost looks like he's a robber when shopping "legally". Laws of gravity are only relevant when they're useful. Pausing the game to throw Mark off guard... Mark 2 added to pokédex. Time to dance! Let's beat up that frog that didn't ask for anything and then dig through more than 30 floors. Finally pretend to be a magicarp and use splash on the last bosses just to troll them, it's super effective! Why is my hand burning?

It's extremely impressive for a first TAS. No no no... It's extremely impressive for a TAS, first or not!

That looks pretty good. Here's my idea for how I tackle different games. 1. Choosing a game. Familiarity and interest are very important. I also like to think about what would look good. Is the action fast? Are there sections that require you to use really impressive and difficult strategies? 2. Doing research. At this point I haven't even toiuched the game yet beyond having played through it normally. Resources you can use here are speeruns that have already been made (either real time or TAS), game walkthroughs, or lists of glitches and bugs you can find online. 3. Attempt to find memory addresses. Speed, X and Y position, and boss HP are the mostly important values. Other games have other special values that help (suubpixel position, for example) 4. Make a test run. This is basically a proof of concept. The goal here is to not make a finished run, but to try things and see if they can work out. This is when WIPs begin to be posted. In my experience, the first version you make of a run is never the final version, so trying to make it the final version is a waste of time. This is still a learning phase. You just got done with theory. Now is time for prac app. 5. Make revisions to the test run. This is where you tweak and start saving frames. Search for optimal paths, find movement techniques, etc. Usually step 4 and 5 are happening around the same time, with 4 being a few stages ahead of five. Community input is important at this point, as it will focus you and give you ideas of things you may have missed. 6. Work on the final run. At this point you start solidifying your stylistic choices as well. When we know what's fastest, we now need to decide what's most entertaining within that frame work. 7. Post final WIP. Sometimes after a certain point members will stop posting WIPs so the final project is a surprise. When I did my Gunstar Heroes run, I only showed WIPs to a select few members that I thought were most helpful in the thread after I felt I had a good grasp of the game. 8. Decide that you have a finished project. Sometimes this step never happens. 9. Submit. Wait for the judges and community to rule on your work.
Nice list, it's really close to what I did for my few TASes. I'll add a personal point that can happen around n°2 on this list: playing the game at least once in real time, but recording it in a movie file (to be able to analyse anything you see or find). And when doing that playthrough, whenever you can, try to do extremely silly things in hopes of finding some glitches :D (there are times when you can feel that there are "glitch possibilities"). It's also a good way to remember about some details if you didn't play the game recently.

There were some fun damage boosts here, I like it ^^. And some good uses of invincibility frames too...

I'm not really a programmer, so I'll talk about gameplay ^^. You'll have to make choices about how the character controls. It will influence the code. For example, do you want the jump height to be fixed or variable depending on how long the player holds the button? There is also inertia... Do the character run at max speed as soon as you start moving? If not, how long does it take to reach that speed? Same thing about stopping, and does the character skid when you want to stop from a high speed or change direction sharply? Another related point is how much control you want to have when you are in the air, inertia again. You can compare games like SMB or Sonic (for the "inertia ones") to Megaman (very little to no inertia). Maybe the easier is to start without any inertia for testing, then adding it to fit what you want to have in terms of gameplay, but again, I'm not a coder.

Ah, I have a chance to nominate one movie before someone else mentions it :D So I'll add [2372] PSX Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee "maximum casualties" by Dooty in 40:00.53

The technical quality seems quite high here :) (when I say "here", I mean "up there, look at the sky") It's really interesting to see all the tricks and knowledge explained in the submission text applied in the game. Buuut... I said interesting instead of entertaining, because I think this run, for me, is not very entertaining by itself: the highlight is the tech quality and that can't be completely appreciated without reading about all the details first. Maybe it doesn't help that I've never played the game, too... I'll vote meh for entertaining and congratulate you for the tech quality ;)

And there are still new (and old) games to do that were never TASed. We have fuel for the future ^^.

I saw this on my YouTube feed and had to come over here. Sorry I'm so hard to get a hold of (YouTube doesn't make any effort to alert you about your inbox). The run is amazing and I don't believe that it is right that I have my name included on this. While I had worked on an Amy run a while ago (June 2012), it was literally less than a week that I had done so. I'm glad that my WIP was helpful and I really appreciate the thought, but I couldn't in my right mind accept any credit for this. Amazing job on this though and sorry to see that the 100% run didn't come to be.
When I joined the project, your name was in the author field in the movie header, it stayed here until the end. And I personallly, absolutely believe you deserve to be credited as a co-author. You did 2 acts of the game; ok, we managed to improve on it, but that wasn't easy, and you still have some of your own inputs left untouched in there. We learned from your WIP, and I think that for example, NGHZ2 would be slower without your contribution, and maybe Egg Rocket too, perhaps other acts... All that thanks to some little tricks that you showed to us in your work ;) When we were about to submit the run and we had to decide wether or not to put your name here, the question for me wasn't "does he deserve it?", it was "does he want it?". Now that you're here, we can have that answer (and don't be modest! Talking about "right mind" on TASvideos feels out of place ^^).

That was too violent for me, I had to watch the first half one day, then the rest today. ...Voting yes because it was very fun to see all those soldiers die. All the elements of a perfect action movie are there: guns, explosions, dead people, fights, glass shattering and absolutely no scenario. If the whole run is as optimized as what I saw each time I watched your streams, it's high quality. PS: I hope T.K. is in jail now.
