It could be done for completeness's sake, but it won't be remotely as entertaining as a normal run because avoiding damage is not hard nor impressive in this game.
Maybe it wouldn't be entertaining because it would be slower, but why do you say it's not hard or impressive? It's conventionally impossible to do so even not counting the three areas where you're supposed to take damage to advance the plot. With all the energy the game gives you, it's assumed you're going to take lots and lots of damage. Beating this game without taking any damage at all is unheard of, and that's why I think it would make for an interesting run.

Has anyone considered doing a no-damage run? It now seems possible to completely avoid the metroid and Mother Brain, and if you cause enough damage to Ridley at the beginning, you can leave without getting hurt.

Yeah, I agree. An encode of the video would be completely insane. I don't care what your settings are. A 1001-hour long video is going to be bigger than the Internet and no one would actually watch it. Now, as for publishing the input file, it would at least serve as proof that you can actually do it.

It's really unfortunate this game has no music or sounds aside from the blips it makes whenever you buzz in. Kind of boring to watch, but hopefully the answers will be good :P
Don't worry about that. I've got it covered.

Okay, cool. I'll redo the questions I have so far, and just leave a few extra frames for reading.

Great run. 7.5/8.5 The reason I only gave it 7.5 for entertainment is because hour long runs are a bit hard to keep you entertained. I had to watch it in chunks. But really great job and some seriously nice glitch abuse.

Thought I'd post what I have so far. I just wanted to get some opinion before I've gone too far into it. Is there enough time to read what I type, or should I have a longer gap at the end of each answer before pressing start? Used US version

Well, I might as well just go ahead and describe it. The idea is to beat the game as stupidly as possible. Preferably, every screen should be beaten by doing something really weird. Make enemies hurt each other or themselves, force enemies to jump off of cliffs, generally do stupid stuff and still win. I've already found a number of tricks and some of the graphics in the game can be really funny. Can you please explain the "get lots of hearts" trick? Edit: I found it. Thanks. I hadn't noticed your playaround River City Ransom. It's actually quite similar to what I had in mind.

I'm looking into an experimental sort of TAS idea. It may or may not work for this site, but I want to do it for the fun of it. It was sort of inspired by the old "Just be funny" thread. I picked Double Dragon since it has the most potential that I can see. I don't want to go into a whole lot of detail as to the exact nature of the run yet, but I was wondering if anyone had any funny tricks or glitch exploits they can point out. Just about anything might be helpful.

My hex editor automatically translates ASCII too.

Thanks a lot. That really helps. Also, I opened the ROM up with a hex editor, and the answers are all viewable as ASCII in the actual ROM (which wasn't the case with Family Feud) That should make things a little more fun. :D

And what's up with those lasers? Grant just walked right through them. O.o
I discovered a glitch where the lasers don't trigger if you pass through them at the very edge of a 16x16 tile, such as when you hug the wall or go through the very centre of the beam.

Finished level 1. 1158 frames faster than the previous run. http://www.heisanevilgenius.com/Heisanevilgenius-MissionImpossible.fcm

After being royally frustrated with this game and putting it aside for over two years, I've picked it up and continued working on it. Level 1 is looking very nice right now. I had to very very carefully choose where to get hit, where not to, and where to use the gas canisters. The entire run is done with Grant, as he's...pretty much the best. He walks the fastest, his punch can kill almost everything (including some enemies you'd otherwise need Max's bombs for), his secondary attack which stuns enemies is a huge time-saver, and he's the only one who can hack combination locks. Switching to anyone else just wastes time. I also discovered one trick that's unfortunately useless. There's a guy with a shield who tries to push you into the deadly sludge who actually moves faster than you. It's possible to get him to push you exactly where you need to go and give you a speed boost for a while. Unfortunately, to get him to do that, you need to take a really sub-optimal route and overall you're about 10-15 frames faster if you just stun him and walk right past him. But I'm mentioning this in case we discover a use for him later on. I also notice that his sprite being on screen causes the drain pipes to not shoot water out and you can avoid taking damage. This still isn't really a time saver, since it's past all the most dangerous parts and there aren't a whole lot of places where you have to avoid taking hits from then on before getting the health pack. I haven't finished the level yet, but I've passed the toughest part and the rest should be a piece of cake. I've planned the remaining route out pretty well and I'm sure I can do it without many problems.

Actually, I just came back to post an update. I have the first round all planned out and should be done fairly soon. Double Jeopardy will be an absolute PAIN to luck-manipulate since I want to have both daily doubles in the first row if possible and I don't even know if that's possible. Anyway, I'm reconsidering one of my criteria. I said I would allow maximum time for the player to read each clue, but this turns out to be a massive amount of wasted time. The game already has a set amount of time before you're allowed to answer, and after that, more than a couple of seconds is just tedious. I'm going to try to set some kind of happy medium. Maybe I should answer before 7 or before 5 or somewhere around there. Edit: Even that's a long wait. My rule will be to always answer as soon as possible (since there's plenty of time to read), except when allowing the computer to answer incorrectly.

Excellent. I've been rather disappointed with previous Megaman X runs which, although fast, aren't very stylish. This was very fast, stylish, and showcased a number of tricks I hadn't thought of. 9.5/9.5 and I hope to see other runs by you in the Megaman X series.

Okay, in testing, I found that a daily double can appear in the second row of the first round. Not sure about the first row yet. I'll consider your idea, scaryice. It sounds interesting. Edit: Yep. You can definitely have a daily double in the first row.

Since my Family Feud run seemed to be a big hit, I think I'll try for this one. First, can anyone confirm for certain that the daily double is always at least in the third row? My goals will be:
  • Abuse the text recognition as much as possible.
  • Get the most money as possible.
  • Give the player the maximum amount of time to read each clue
For the last point, that means I'll always buzz in at the closest possible frame in order for the clue to disappear off the screen at the same time it normally would. If an AI player buzzes in before that, I'll buzz in at the last possible frame to beat them if they answer correctly. If they answer incorrectly, I'll allow it for two reasons. 1. The NES version of Jeopardy sometimes had AI players buzz in really early to say something nonsensical and lose, so if this version has the same feature I'll let them do it rather than interrupt the player's reading time. 2. Just to humiliate them and make sure they end up with a negative amount of money.

http://www.heisanevilgenius.com/Heisanevilgenius-WallStreetKid-WIP1.fcm The first task is completed. Even as a TAS, it came really close. Every single day, optimal buying and selling of stocks is done, and at the end of the month I reached the million dollar goal with only $116,000 above. Some notes: 1. I had to exercise late in the month or I have a stroke on the 1st of May. Luckily, the stock I'd bought soars over the other stocks for several days and 100% of my money is invested into it (which is hard to do since they tend to be uneven prices) so I can just go ahead and take an 8-hour hike instead of working that day and it doesn't affect my trading whatsoever. It also saves time because if I don't exercise on that day, the next day Prisila calls me up to tell me I don't look well, which means a lot of wasted time on dialogue that isn't needed. 2. This game is so boring. Definitely not fun to play, to TAS, and probably not much fun to watch, but the reason I decided to try it is in case someone was interested in exactly how much money you can make or how possible the game is to beat. I'd say it's practically impossible without save states as you can see how close I came to losing the first task even with perfect knowledge of the stock market and very careful trading to make the most use of it.

I noticed a slight error on the description. It said that the Halls get a chance to answer in the last round, which is incorrect. You have two family members who can participate in the fast question round. Between the two family members you need to get 200 points. For the first member, I picked answers that sounded correct but aren't on the list, getting zero points. For the second, I picked ridiculous answers, got all the number one answers and got all 200 points with the one person alone.

Now here's a real kick in the face. Even tool-assisted you can't complete the first goal in one try. When the real estate agent calls you up the first time to say the house is for sale you have to say no the first time, and wait for him to offer it to you a second time. Even with perfect knowledge of what stocks are going to go up and down, and careful mathematical precision in picking the right combination of stocks to make sure you make the most profit possible, it's impossible to double your money from $500k to one million in the first two weeks. What were they thinking when they made this game? Oh well. I guess I just have to say no the first time. Just embarrassing that you can't tool-assist your way into winning the mission on the first try.

Yeah, maybe this movie should be redone so that the input is not as fast in the bonus round. It's a bit unnecesary in this kind of run, and it would be more watchable. : /
I'm open to that. What does everyone think? Should I quickly redo the last round to create something more easily readable?

I think I'll try to get past the first goal and see how that goes. If it's really incredibly boring I'll leave it at that.
