Voted no. But it was an affectionate no. I'm assuming Aqfaq did this as a joke and it was fairly amusing but I don't think I need to explain why I had to vote no.

That was pretty cool. The last Friday the 13th TAS I saw wasn't even remotely this fast. Definite yes vote.

Which I do. I respect that people may want to watch that and I'm not criticizing those who do. I only criticize the people who make remarks like that people who disagree with them should be banned.

I know that the film in question doesn't reach the high quality of FF8, but I couldn't think of a better example. There probably aren't many. I suppose I was just comparing ageless classics in two different industries.
Haha, okay, you got me. :p

Isn't that the entire purpose to this site? A TAS is designed to entertain.
Mission Statement TASvideos.org is committed to providing the best in tool-assisted speedruns and superhuman play. Our runs are held to high standards, and only high quality runs will be published on the site. We also prefer quality over quantity — a poor quality run will not be accepted whether it is a game new to the site or an improvement to a pre-existing run. Our runs may not be perfect (if that is even possible), but are still high quality and aim to be as entertaining as possible.
Do you seriously not understand the "This game makes for a boring TAS" argument? It's the reason we don't have a TAS for Duck Hunt and Jeopardy. Theoretically someone could come up with a way to luck manipulate a Jeopardy game to prompt the questions that can be answered with the shortest answers that can be really fast but nobody would want to watch it.

Shouldn't we just compare the alternatives and pick the best one? 1. Publishing: We get a good (and the best so far) answer to the question "How quickly can this game be completed. People interested in the game may enjoy watching the whole of it, or using parts of it for reference. 2. Not publishing: We save some work for the publishers, and some disk space.
See, this goes against the whole "quality over quantity" idea just posed in the mission statement. Saying that we should just publish everything simply because we can and because it's not hard to encode it, goes against the entire concept behind this site. I know that most people who voted enjoy Final Fantasy and find the speedrun to be entertaining. I know that this will probably be published and I don't really have a problem with that if that's what everyone wants. As I said before I appreciate the work that went into this, and it's a very impressive accomplishment. I, for my part, didn't enjoy it because I don't think the game is well-suited to a TAS. If I didn't enjoy it, I must honestly vote no. And if I vote no, I must explain why. Why is this not end of discussion?

I was referring to you voting "no" and voicing a rather negative opinion after watching a very small portion of the entire run.
I'm sorry, but I think expecting someone to watch eight full hours of a speedrun before voting no is pretty insane, and comparing a TAS of a Final Fantasy game to Citizen Kane is pretty bizarre. But more on the first point, if someone submitted a SMB run that was very obviously not optimized from the very first level and takes more than twice as long as the current movie, you would vote no without watching the entire thing, wouldn't you? We have high standards here and the rule should always be to watch the full thing before voting yes because you want to make sure it's thoroughly optimized and entertaining, but it doesn't take that long to realize if something is wrong. And yes, maybe I watched a "very small portion" but I still sat through sixteen minutes. That's the length of a television show. There's no way I'm going to spend eight hours on this. That's a full-time shift. At minimum wage where I come from that's $82 worth of time. So unless I'm willing to devote that much time to watching this speedrun, my opinion is totally invalid? I totally lose the right to say "No, I don't think this is entertaining"? If Citizen Kane was eight hours long, I think people honestly would walk out on it after a few minutes and that doesn't make them uncultured.

Well, I'm intrigued. It might seem boring, but it would be interesting to see how different characters accomplish the same tasks with their different abilities. In SMB2 some levels are ridiculously easy if you pick Luigi or the Princess, but are very difficult if you pick any other character. Though, the fact that Mario and Toad are very similar is a pretty big downside.

What? Is there something hypocritical about me saying that? Saying that someone should be IP banned because they have a different opinion is pretty immature and ridiculous. I voted no because I don't think this game is well-suited to a TAS. And it's not well-suited to a TAS because it's loaded with cutscenes that slow the game to a constant crawl. Unless you're a huge Final Fantasy fan, it's not entertaining. You know, there were a lot of posts here complaining that the last no voter wouldn't explain why. I explained why. Nice to know that you have the same attitude to people who actually give their opinion than people who just click a button and move on.

I was the second person to vote no on this. And no, I didn't watch the whole thing. I watched 16 minutes of it. Arrrgghgh, it's nothing but cutscenes! I was bored out of my skull. I'm sure DarkKobold did a great job at it and I applaud his efforts but this game is really boring to watch, even as a TAS.

Is there an in-game trick to skip the cutscenes or is that just video editing? Nevermind. I wasn't reading properly. X_X

The issue isn't whether the game and system are good, it's whether the game is suited for a TAS and if your run is sufficiently fast and entertaining.

I like Penguin Adventure, but this is a really bad choice for a TAS. Voting no. Also, 100%? Wouldn't that mean collecting all the fish and flags?

Yeah, I played Antarctic Adventure about a year ago and then more recently played Penguin Adventure and was blown away by it. It's like going from the arcade Mario Bros. to Super Mario Bros. 3 in just a couple of years without the sequels in-between.

I don't believe green hearts get you any closer. They just give you more time on your clock. In most of the levels this doesn't matter because you use a warp so it doesn't tally up your leftover time.

Oh! I didn't even think of that. Yeah, that would require some luck manipulation, I guess.

I'm on the fence about this one. Everything up until the ten minute mark was great, then just a couple of minor issues kind of hold me back. To begin with, I think the good ending would be preferred. But then about 10:00 or so, you collect an orange heart that I don't really think does much for entertainment value. Then about 10:10 some lag happens, probably because of too many sprites on screen. I'd suggest killing the happy faces before they shoot. At the second orange heart of the level, it's a lot more fun. You smash through a bunch of boulders. But it seems like you only hit the ones in the middle. Try to hit as many as you can without slowing down. In the next water level you collect a green heart, which gives you more time. This actually makes the tally at the end of the level take slightly longer. You should get it when it's purple or avoid it altogether. Otherwise, this is a really great run. Very fun to watch.

I might consider giving this game a shot and see if I can come up with something more entertaining.

I don't think this game is suitable for TASing. Also, why does the main character have transparent highlights? Cheapskate developers.
...what are you talking about!? What highlights!? It's a penguin! And I'd hardly call the developers cheapskate. This game was made by Konami. Specifically by Hideo Kojima. And it's loaded with awesome stuff. He obviously put a LOT of work into this game.

And another thing: You picked Level 1 instead of Level 2. Around here we usually prefer to see a run of the most difficult setting unless there's a compelling reason to play the easier one.

I love this game. (I just reviewed it last month for Blistered thumbs: http://www.blisteredthumbs.net/2011/03/wvg-penguinadventure/ ) It's not exactly an auto-scroller like Sonikkustar said, but when you travel at top speed all the time it might as well be. Anyway, I had to give you a meh vote based on the following criteria: 1. Most of the time you don't do much that's interesting or exciting. A lot of the time you just stand there in the middle. When you get a cloud, most of the time you just float to the top and stay there. You should move around more. Dodge more hard-to-dodge enemies rather than killing them. Do dangerous stuff. 2. You get way too many orange hearts. There's only one time I can see where getting one is entertaining, and that's on one level where you smash through a whole bunch of boulders at once. Even then you pretty much stay still. Otherwise, it just looks like you get these to make the game easier. That's no fun. Do challenging fun stuff. It's a TAS. You shouldn't be playing it safe and going invincible all the time. Besides that, it interrupts the music. When you get more than one in one level it's actually annoying. 3. I don't really see the need to buy the feather. I'm not entirely convinced you need the propeller beanie either. You can save a few frames by just buying the green shoes and the pistol and ignoring the others. It'll make the game tougher but it shouldn't slow you down. If you absolutely need the beanie hat to save time, then go for it, but I don't think the feather is necessary. 4. I think I noticed a point where the game lags that can be avoided. It's in one of the last levels where a smiley-face shoots at you. It seems like the projectiles created lag with all the enemies on screen, so killing the smiley-faces before they shoot would make the game go faster. I know this seems to contradict what I said earlier about dodging enemies rather than killing them, but you want to avoid lag where you can. 5. On one of the levels where you get the map, you seem to wait for a long time before leaving the shop and I have no idea why. 6. You yourself commented that one of the bosses is improvable. You do zoom through this game fast and you take a very optimal route with shortcuts, but because of the game's nature, you shouldn't really be going through it so robotically. Penta's gotta be a daredevil here.

I have to vote no because SMB1 was finished half-way through the run. You know what would turn it into a big yes? If you replayed SMB1 in hard mode, and finished that at the same time as the other three. Since it's really close to the half-way point of the movie when you beat it on easy, I'd say that's more than possible.
You may want to read my post on the previous page: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=268537#268537. The run is speed-optimized. The synchronization of the other three probably isn't intentional. Besides, adding a second run of SMB1 would significantly increase the run's time. The SMB3 run would end up being much more than 14 seconds longer than the SMB3-only run; not a good thing.
I see. There were a lot of points that looked somewhat less than optimal, then. Maybe just nature of the beast, but there's a lot of points where in one game Mario's just standing there. I thought the objective was a little more about entertainment.

Sorry for the late reply. I haven't been active with this site recently. Just wondering why this run obsoletes the last one, since it's actually slightly longer (according to the tas bot).

I'm glad to see so many people supporting the International Super Star Soccer movie. When they come out that early in the year it seems like people forget about it by year's end and it's a great relief to see that hasn't been the case.
