I can't help but think you picked up some unneeded parts during the parts salvaging segment to fix up the boat. But other than that the whole run was a good watch, so I'm voting yes.

Couldn't you remap the directional controls to different keys on your keyboard?
Or use the emulator's auto hold feature. It's a little annoying to toggle buttons on and off this way if you only need to do it for a few frames, but it's how I made parts of the Zelda 2 run.

what's the moat door? I've never heard of this BitDW skip idea, can someone explain?
The moat door is the exit point from when you drain the moat to open up the invisible cap stage. The idea is to open said door from the outside to skip the first key. The problem being you can't open the door.

Inzult: I'm pretty sure it loaded for you, that is just it, the controller and some sounds on the buttons. Was it too obvious? How much of the game have you played?
Oh ok, I wasn't sure but that is indeed what is loading so I guess we're A-ok! I've only been about halfway through the game, but I played a hell of a lot as a little kid. So the music and sound are burned into my brain forever. Since I was young I didn't really understand what I was supposed to be doing besides finding the exit, so even if I made it to the end, I wouldn't have been able to win. It's depressing to think about how much that game was stacked against you. I should revisit it now that FAQs exist and conquer those demons! In any case, I would never have guessed by the D pad and A/B. Select and start were both dead giveaways.

The page didn't quite load properly for me, so I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be doing something on the site, but it's Gauntlet.

The run is speed-optimized. The synchronization of the other three probably isn't intentional. Besides, adding a second run of SMB1 would significantly increase the run's time. The SMB3 run would end up being much more than 14 seconds longer than the SMB3-only run; not a good thing.
I dunno, I have a hard time imagining that if a new run was made that taking a less optimal route in Mario 1 would affect Mario 3 speed-wise if that game was still the main focus...

Something seems a bit off to me about the hydra fight. I'm guessing there are invulerability periods to worry about but for some reason it still strikes me as some shots aren't being taken as soon as they could be.

I agree. Why should those be published and not this one? If someone gets a world record time in a 100m race by just a tiny fraction of a second, they don't get denied the record because the judge didn't like the way the runner moved his arms.
TAS is more analogous to, say, racewalking I think. The fastest person wins, but it is possible to be disqualified for poor form. Or peraps some people would prefer to think of it like moguls skiing? Speed is measured and important in the final score, but competitors are also judged on technical quality and style. In any case you could compare it to whatever you wanted! TAS is like a lot of bees! There's a lot of them!

I personally think the goal of the site should be to feature the best movie to a general audience of 10,000+ instead of presenting something "different" to the 100 or so people who constantly follow the Mario 64 TASing scene. You're welcome to disagree.
I think this is a reasonable stance to take. A cursory glance at the youtube comments for this run tells me the general audience doesn't seem to care one way or the other though. I think I read one lukewarm comment and one vaguely positive one specifically about the camera. Everybody else is busy talking about 2 frames and cakes being delicious or something. If we take this thread to be indicative of a general audience's opinion, the sentiments are a lot more focused, mixed, and hyperbolic, clearly.

The arguments presented by those who ARE in favor of this run obsoleting the previous, boil down to three things: 1) rejecting this submission would be rude to the authors as they have exerted much effort making it; 2) this is a speedrun site, entertainment doesn't matter; 3) you have to TAS SM64 to be able to vote no (voting yes, however, is perfectly alright), and people doing that are idiots.
My thoughts were more along the lines that the camera angles chosen are not annoying nor do they make it impossible to tell what's going on. Honestly I didn't even think about them until I saw the thread talking about them.

I just watched the encode, don't really see what the fuss is about regarding the camera. Voting yes.

Phil, Are you still an annoying Canadian?
I know you were not asking me, but I am also a Phil who is an annoying Canadian. Do you think we should launch a study into the correlation of how being a Canadian Phil relates to annoyance?

Yes, rejecting a movie for another movie that doesn't exist doesn't make sense. Delaying it for a little while to see if quick progress can be made, ok, but otherwise I think the run looks good enough for publication.

A cursory glance at the maps says a 100% run should activate portals 2 and 4 to avoid backtracking. I think you start with portal 1, have to ckeck that. I'll draw up a for reals proposed route later but does anyone care if all portals are activated?

This seems pretty straightforward to me. If abusing continues is entertaining, it gets published. If it isn't, it doesn't.

Hey, sorry, just thinking out loud about routes. The gauntlet of evil is optional, and key 4 is optional. Should they be skipped? I'm almost positive damage amp wouldn't save time since you get it so late and have to go so far out of the way. You need key 4 for the 'good' ending but does anyone care which ending is gotten? I know for sure you can skip the infinite oxygen item the second time (spoilers you lose it). If key 4 and damage amp is gotten, should it be skipped? I guess basically what I'm getting at is would people prefer a 100% or an any% run. Personally I was thinking any% easy mode would be best, but 100% unfair mode would be fine too.

There is a damage glitch? Please elaborate
You pause the game at the same time you pick up an item, if memory serves, and you can't take damage afterwards. I think you may need to undo it before you fight the colormancer? I forget. But caitsith is correct, it was fixed for version 1.1 anyway.

Well, I guess I have two questions. Should the game be run on easy mode for the damage amp at the start, and should the invincibility glitch be used?

I was thinking such a run would look the same as the any% run route-wise. Except you could skip all the spells, obviously. But that isn't really true since there's no reason to go to death mountain right away if you already have downstab. And the spells really sidetrack you. So yeah, I'd watch it.

I'm a little annoyed that both the characters were named A, but that doesn't matter very much for a run this short. I would like to request, though, that if you make a warpless run of this game, that you give them different names. I think wasting one frame to name the girl "B" would make things a lot clearer when you actually get to see the full plot of the game.
I don't want to speak out of turn because I've never played this game let alone tried to tas it, but in a lot of games I have messed around with where you could name your character, pressing a direction and the A button on the same frame would work. So in those games you could name your character something other than "A" at the expense of 0 frames. Why this isn't done more often in general is beyond me but I guess that's a different question all together. edit: just finished watching it; very nice work :D

That was sickening. Simply disgusting. Frankly, I am horrified. You should all feel bad for what you've done to this poor game. So yeah obviously it should be published.

I hope I can get this bot out to more people with bigger collections so we can test even more games.
I know 2 collectors with near-complete nes collections who live pretty close to me, and I myself have about 400 games. I will gladly help in any way I can! Keep in mind, however, I am not technically inclined so things would have to be fairly idiot-proof.

I know this game is kind of slow compared to other monkey ball games. I know a GC run would be better... But for what it was I still liked watching it. So yep!
