Thanks for the comments, guys (especially the positive ones—go Hydlide!). Some mixed reactions, which is sort of what I was expecting. I'm really quite hopeful that a run for this game is acceptable. The way the comments are coming, though, it may be a tough choice. And I agree about the music. I can't stand it.

Hah. Well, it is a bit of a jab at the thread in the general forum, but maybe not totally inaccurate. I think the movie is entertaining, but admittedly probably only for someone who's familiar with the game :)

I got 140. Quoting Bag to add a hint of mystery. Here's a low quality super compressed screenshot: http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/671/picture1ba1.jpg If you want the full screen have a look. edit: that screenshot's pretty intrusive...

Think: "Training RPG". All you do is train. Then you go get an item. Then you go train some more. And I think it's impossible to win at a low level--the dragon (and the final boss after it) hurt you when you just stand next to them. So a TAS would be much longer than 10 minutes due to training.
I successfully got to the dragon in about 6 minutes while testing, at the minimum level to cast 'wave'. At that level, though, you can only hit the dragon twice per full bar of health, and even so, on 'defence' mode. I imagine the last boss will be a bit worse. I managed to make it all the way to the wizards at level 1. Leveling twice on Hypers and twice on Eels doesn't take too long. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie would be slow leveling and/or standing around while your health bar regenerates. So, yes, ten minutes is an optimistic guess... but maybe not too far off. In fact, I think I'll work on a complete run and see what happens ;)

Yes, Hydlide also was the first game that came into my mind. I cannot estimate whether this will make a good TAS, but seeing it getting beaten in a few minutes (if that is even possible) would definitely put a smile on all the frustrated victims' faces that had to play it.
Out of morbid curiosity, I did some testing on this game. Looks like it could be done pretty comfortably in under 10 minutes. If it wasn't for the dragon fight taking forever, Maybe more like 6-7 minutes. A boring 6-7 minutes, mind you.

I'm guessing that you began with the intention of a TAS but decided to make it only a test run.
No, I made it with the intention of being a test, but not looking like shit. So it'd still convey the idea of what the real TAS would look like, but I wouldn't gouge my eyes out in a fit of rage trying to be frame perfect while learning the game and figuring out what to do.

The only area of improvement i think so far is on the first archer on the roof. I was able to get past him without stopping to destroy his arrows.
That's cool. There are plenty of ways to distract with Cutrus while sneaking around with Orin (I assume that's what you did). It becomes some super stealth game when you slow it down :D I look forward to the wip :) Also, I hope you test prejumping vs just falling off ledges. The jump animation is pretty slow and the downward acceleration seems pretty fast... I know I never even bothered to check when to jump and when not to, so you'll find a lot more time on the way back down and in the next stage ;)

The Camera Shop is located in Tal Tal Heights, just to the east of the Goponga Swamp. This is a new feature to the DX version of the game. At certain points in the game, a photographer will appear and take your picture. You can view these pictures in the album in the Camera Shop (and you can print them with the GameBoy Printer too). There are 12 pictures in all... ...#7 - Steal from the shop by picking up the item, running around the guy, and going out the door.
Mind you, this isn't done at all in the run. But I gather that's what was being referred to. Not that I think one ending is particularly better than the other. just saying.

I actually think that NES Hydlide would make a pretty good TAS because of it's lack of playability and how the attack/defend system seems to work. Even though it's not on the wikipedia (which is infallible by the way) article, and merely in the discussion page. Maybe it's not bad enough? I know there's a Hydlide TAS out there somewhere, but I never saw it... so I could be dead wrong.

The only really useful quirk I've found thus far that doesn't appear in that test is that if you press down and forward on the last frame you are still on a platform, you will drop straight down. This has applications in rooms where the goal is below and behind you. Be sure to post wips. I'd love to see this done :D

Actually, I started casually working on this (again) about a week ago. It's a real pain to optimize. I haven't found any glitches. I was going to put together a rough testrun, halfassedly optimized, and see what everyone thought before committing myself to it. I'm having the usual internet woes, so I'll post my test of the first 2 levels (same level order, I think?) as soon as I can, so you have something to compare to. I wasn't going to collect ice balls or the Z jars in the test, but I imagine both would be useful, depending on where they were and whom the boss is. I'm not sure how long the Z jar lasts, but there's at least 1 level where it's in the boss room, if I recall correctly. If you don't have to go too far out of the way for the ice ball, and the boss moves around a lot, then go for it. For the first level I play's boss, I don't think the ice ball is useful, but for the second, I'd say yes. I can tell you that stabbing is faster than jumping, if you have to use Orin to get by an enemy. Otherwise, it's best to stun with Cutrus and run with Orin. Taking damage on stairs doesn't seem to slow you down. I don't have lots of time right now to work on it, so I'm glad someone's taking it up. I'll play around and see if I can find anything for you. And good luck ;) edit: here's the levels 1&2 test It's not optimal by any means, but I've tried out various strategies in various rooms. Maybe you'll get some ideas and/or see what not to do ;) In particular the rooms that involve jumping are not done well.

Thanks, adelikat. But if I may:

I'd really like to see the fairy glitch used since it could shave a few minutes off the run, but alas...
For some reason, I felt weird developing a plan including the fairy glitch to compete with Jack's run. Like, what glitches go in this run, and what ones go in the 'glitched' run? If I use fairy, should I use the healer glitch? Or do I just disclude all broken controller glitches? Or do I try to return all the crystals, by any means? I decided to just avoid all warping glitches and try to improve the run more directly. I don't know. Seems like a gray area to me.

Oooh! Oooh! I want to play too! How about this chart, which is from 2005? The source being OECD. Finland 44.6% for the average wage. Denmark 41.4% for the average wage. Belgium 55.4% for the average wage.

It looks like you could stand on the other end of the elevator and start moving forward when the elevator is still in motion, so that when you get off the elevator you are already at full speed.
I know you were referring to downward moving lifts, but now that I think about it, this may be worth testing on upwards moving lifts. That is, moving to the wrong side first, to see if Link's speed is higher when he gets off. As long as we still have room to get off as soon as possible. Link's acceleration is pretty good, but not instantaneous. I'm not sure if it would actually help... Elevator action.

Ha, cool. Good eye. I can't beleive I didn't even bother to check that on the lifts. That'll go on my to-do list for next time. I'll be actively looking for quicker paths on the overworld as well. If I walked on both squares, one of the blobs, I think, moved differently and caught up to me. Now that I think about it, there's probably a few frames extra wait time that would make the enemeis behave the same way but take a few fewer frames overall. That solution to the path to the Swamp Palace was the best I could find. I doubt means it's the best there is ;)

Can't help with that one. October 25th, by the by. 1981, even. Therefore I am almost a quarter of a century old. I realize this is too much information, given the question, but I feel weird posting just a word and a number on a message board.

Is this a 100% of items collected run, or is it "collect the bare minimum needed to beat the game?". In addition, is the up+A cheat used to restart or is it completed without that cheat?
It has been submitted, as Serj said. You can (will!) see it in the Workbench forum. It collects the bare minimum of items. Up+a is used. Left+right, jump+fairy and that weird town glitch (whatever it is, I don't even really understand it) are not used.

Yes, but it wouldn't have mattered, since fairy can move on the elevator. I moved to the side as far as I could before getting off the elevator anyway.

Awesome. This means I'll probably be able to submit it tomorrow (dun dun dun). Time to start thinking of what to write for the submission text. A list of known improvements, maybe? :P
