I think it's a good policy myself. If you make a run and you let the possible improvements be known publicly, at least it's honest. There are probably many more movies submitted with improvements known by the author, but not mentioned because they don't want to jeopardize their chances of being published.

I think this looks great. Very well played. Personally I don't see how getting the speed boots will save you 30 seconds, no matter how aggressive you build your gold early. And to the naysaysers...what about the big movement on the site to improve Famtasia runs? This is definitely a substantial improvement over one of them. A possible estimated improvement due to a radical route change (as opposed to optimization in movements) shouldn't stop this from being published. Otherwise we wouldn't have seventeen thousand Dragon Warrior runs. I vote an emphatic yes.

That's weird that it won't work there...that throws off my theory too.

The picture can be found here, it won't let me link to it from elsewhere, that's why I edited my first post to type out what the intro screen said. Edit: replied to an edited post, we just keep missing each other, huh? :)

Wow a TAS on that website?? Considering how adamant Nate is about anti-TAS, I'm very surprised. Luckily, he still found the time to let everyone know he's above all of us:

My intuition tells me that the "warp" is just a result of hitting the P-switch from underneath. Since the block is being passed through, Mario hits the P-switch and for some reason is placed on top of it. Either way, it's neat to see.

First of all, there are noticeable improvements, and they look good. Picking up the cards in 5-1 to avoid the pit was nice, and 6-2's use of regrabbing the block to get the card above the goal was great. (These may have been in the first version, but I don't remember seeing them at the time) Although I voted yes on your first submission, I'm not sure what to vote here. The reason is that either you discovered a fantastic new glitch (and didn't use it enough), or you didn't notice it and still used it a bit. Continually jumping as soon as you land will keep your extra speed after jumping from a downhill run. In some places, it looked like you used it knowing this glitch existed (2-1, for example), but in others, it wasn't used as much as it could be, so I'm not sure if you were aware of it or not. Here is an example of the first three levels using this glitch more (although the first level is exactly the same). 90 frames faster at the end of 1-4, but probably still improvable. Other levels that may benefit from this:
  • 2-4
  • 2-5 (maybe, by veering left to hit a slope early on)
  • 4-3 (tiny downhill at the beginning)
  • 5-1 possibly, although that level is already done pretty fast
I hope you make a third version with this glitch fully exploited and gain even more time off the old published run. It doesn't seem like too long of a game to run, so it shouldn't be too bad. I will vote yes to that, but I voting meh to this one. I'm not voting no because if you aren't going to do a third version right away, then this should still be published, as it's not bad and it certainly trumps the existing run by a wide margin. Other notes: One possible improvement I noticed is during the times when you have to change direction for whatever reason. It takes a long time to slow down. For the times where you have a wall that could stop you, it may be faster to instead run into the wall to get an instant stop of velocity, and then head in the opposite direction. I didn't test this though. And in 4-4 you walk right over a card at the end and don't grab it. Wouldn't it be faster to get this card instead of the other card in the same level?

The only instance I could think of it saving time would be warping through a ceiling to take a shortcut...but I can't think of a circumstance in SMB3 where this would apply. I'm guessing that during the frames a ? block is in the process of being hit, it doesn't exist as a barrier.

I always thought Kirby's Adventure was an excellent example of the NES at its best as far as graphics, sounds, playability, depth, etc. (although SMB3 is another great example). Of course, that's probably cuz Kirby was one of the last NES games released.

This looks very very good. The gold-building is (obviously) repetitive, but it's not too bad and definitely better than the repetitiveness found walking down each tower. Besides the route, this is also improving on damage taken to save time (and using health as a resource), and just cutting corners closer with more precise walking.

Plus, after comparing with the current video, it looks like the speed boots would be worth it if I get them at the beginning, so they help with all 7 towers. (The estimate of 1 second saved per staircase is actually really accurate!)
That seems doubtful to me, but you know this game better than I obviously. It would take 232/4 = 58 seconds to get enough gold, and about 10(?) to do the extra walking for one more gold-building trip (from the store and back). 7 towers + 1 final level = 66 sets of stairs. It would be a very close call (and would also make a lot more of the run gold-building). Anyway, I'll be looking for this submission shortly :) Edit: I also like how you gained all sorts of health to lose it on the bat boss to be closer when he dies to grab the bell (I think this is why you did it).

I'm trying to find where this rules are cuz I wouldn't want to unknowingly break one and lose all my votes on one of my submissions. I checked both the site's Rules page and the Forum rules, and there's nothing about it. Anyone got a link for me?

I just watched it. Very impressive indeed! Especially toward the end, taking the hit to get through Valley of Bowser 2 faster, the very close call at the Reznor fight of Valley Fortress (made my heart skip a bit and I'm just watching it!), and running through Back Door with no lights on.

If you tell the SRAM to put Crono's evade at 99 (which it cannot get to during normal play), I highly doubt that it will put it back down to 45 or whatever the limit is through actual repeated NewGame+ play. I think what Saturn meant was that if you put their power at something above 99 (or whatever ** signifies), it rounds it back down to this value.

I just meant it was possible, not that it was done - for example, someone's "evade" attribute could be starred out although normally it would not reach that level without a proper accessory.

This movie beats the game as fast as possible with the best possible conditions you can get and this is the point of this movie. It's absolutely frame-perfect and I took very much effort for it.
I don't doubt this, I just think that it is not a good addition to the site, and I also think that one that starts from the ending stats of the current full-game TAS would not be a good addition to the site either.

Holy crap, I had no idea this game would look so cool tool-assisted. I hope someone continues this, whether it's Blublu, Healblade, or anyone else competent.

I think if you're gonna base it off a New Game +, it should be based off the full game TAS.
This would probably require some extra preparation before fighting Lavos, which defeats the point.

Better to use a save file that ensures victory as fast as possible.
However, this is stupid too; of course a game can be beat quickly if we max out our stats. The SRAM can be hacked to give the characters higher stats than can be achieved during normal play - should we publish a movie about that? The solution is to reject this movie. We already have the full play of Chrono Trigger.

What does it matter what SDA and TG classify as a glitch or not? This site doesn't go by the same rules as either of those. That's like publishing a seperate Mega Man 2 run that doesn't use the items to zip through the walls.

I could get the boots too, but I'd have to raise 232 gold. That would take about 1 minute of (very boring) gold-building. But would they really save 1 minute over 5 towers? That's a tough call... maybe I will look into this more later, and compare the 3rd tower time with and without boots.
BW's run gets the boots before the third tower, and so taking only half of the staircases I mentioned earlier, there's no way that it would save one minute - plus there's the time needed to actually get the boots, which is close to another minute. You are ahead by 54 seconds, wow. This is about the same amount of time needed to get the speed boots, so that means that the time you took to get the money and buy the scrolls was pretty much gained back after only 2 towers (if you ingore the fact that you are also skipping the speed boots, which saves even more time). I would estimate even more than 2 minutes of improvement coming up, having five more towers to skip half of. Any chance of posting your progress?

I think using up+A should obsolete the other run, even if it didn't use it (as long as it doesn't slack off). If using up+A is allowed, then it should be used in a TAS where applicable to save time. There's no need for a different category simply because someone chose not to use a certain timesaver. (There's no SMB2(USA) without up+down, as a good example)
