I don't try to start stupid arguments, but it always seems to happen. :( I should speak in very clear sentences and then leave this topic. So I will do that. 1) Liking one game over another is a dumb thing to "argue" about. They're just opinions. 2) The point of my first post was that pirate was making himself look idiotic, and probably trolling, by sprinkling his submission text with random shots at another game. Admittedly, I also was noticing that pirate_sephiroth has called out other things that were pretty obscure and random, so that contributed to my opinion of "troll". 3) My second post was in response to p_s saying that anyone who doesn't have the same preferences as him is "choosing" to be blind, bolding it, and putting it into some philosophical sounding bullshit. That's just retarded. 4) Slightly irrelevant: I like just about all Castlevania games. This one is not bad, nor is this run. I just like SCV4 more. And I like SotN more than that. Also I voted yes here. Peace

The most delicious part of the bagel is found in the center. Boldface text does not imply a deeper meaning (or relevance to the topic at hand, apparently).

Ker-bump I've been trying to download this AVI for over a month. Currently I'm at 48.3%, but it's stalled for the last few weeks. It says there are 4 seeds, but I get no connection. I can download many other torrents from here without problems. Adelikat's been seeding, but I'm unable to download from him, I guess. He thinks this is because he has a firewall and I have a router. If anyone can help, I will send you some cookies. Much thanks <3

The votes here got changed, because soulrivers was added in the spot zggzdydp was in (my request for alphabetical order), and took his votes. And now someone also voted for the new zggzdydp slot. /o\ Angerfist HALP

"Gay techno"? Lol, you insult the most random and retarded stuff. You might as well be trolling, especially since SCV4 absolutely demolishes this game in every aspect. Anyway, I'm watching the run now. Hopefully you don't take two tries to insert a key into the door like the previous run did :)

I'm very impressed by this run. The genre of the game puts an immense amount of burden on the author to create entertaining waiting periods, and you handled it excellently mmbossman. This run is packed with awesome. And I see that you spelled JXQ! <3 I think it helps that it's short with easy-to-recognize letters :) Annie in white = yummy.

I'd also be interested in a finished version. I don't think this should have been submitted, even though it does get more attention that way. In the NES version, tornado was faster than wheel in many places due to better vertical control. Did you test this for the GBA version? I think this game would make a good non-speed-based run, since it could show off many different powers, and perhaps some oddities, though I don't know of any in this game. The game is quite odd as it is :)

Edit - New, better pic December 2007.

Thank you all for more ideas. One thing I want to avoid is having so many categories that people get sick of casting votes. I think "most persevered/insane/patient/sexy TASer" is getting into that territory. They are all qualities that us TASers have by definition ;) I also think "Least expected improvement" is too similar to "Best glitch discovery". I'm wondering more opinions on "Best unpublished TAS". I see some merit but also see some downsides. If any of the other decisions are unpopular, please let me know.

Thank you for the suggestions. RT-55J, I did not put yours in since you have not watched it :P But, speaking of RPG-type games, I do not know them well, and so I have no knowledge as to which ones have more luck manipulation than the others. Pokemon? Final Fantasy? Dragon Warrior? If someone is more familiar and has some input, it would be appreciated. Thanks :)

arkiandruski, I think listing the runs is a good idea, but maybe not on this post..? You can see a list by-author here. I think when the actual voting threads are made, this information should be copied into that initial post for all author categories. I'll add this author-list link to the first post as well. Angerfist, I'll add those nominations, thanks. I didn't have many ideas for SNES TASer because no one specifically focused on it as much as other systems. hero had the most SNES runs, with 3. I think voting could start a few days after 2007 ends. I also agree that "overall TAS" could be a "second round" vote that is based on the system-winners of the first round. However, I think arkiandruski made a good point about doing a similar thing for "overall TASer", but I would be okay with either method. Either way, I think the vote for that should be later than the other categories (at the same time as "overall TAS of the year"). Hopefully we're not dominating the discussion here (it's easy to do that when trying to get things started). The other possibility is that a small group is selecting well the view of many. Hopefully that is the case. Or maybe a lot of people haven't seen this thread yet :)

I agree with this. I think anything directly derived from whatever statistics is just that, and really undiscussable. Who had the most TASes this year? Who had the highest rated TAS total using formula X? Etc.. Here is a list of TASes of 2007, sorted by author. So I will now write the ideas I had for more "discussable" categories, to try and get the ball rolling. I'm hoping that others come up with more or better categories/nominees than I have so far. ---Movies--- Speedy TASes of 2007 - TASes that really look fast: [802] SNES Biker Mice From Mars (USA) by Baxter in 05:12.62 [886] N64 Wetrix 64 (USA) by Deign in 00:49.72 [919] GBA "Maxim Version" Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance (USA) by Comicalflop in 00:24.3 [969] NES Legacy of the Wizard (USA) by Lord Tom in 13:44.23 [972] SNES Mask, The (USA) by Randil in 06:39.8 Glitchy TASes of 2007 - Runs that are so glitchy, they're confusing to watch: [813] NES Widget (USA) by CtrlAltDestroy in 05:48.83 [822] GB "warp glitch" Zelda: Link's Awakening (USA/Europe v1.0) by Soulrivers in 04:00.5 [824] NES "glitched" Legend of Zelda 2 (USA) by Inzult in 06:13.08 [826] Genesis Sonic 3 and Knuckles (any) by Nitsuja in 34:22.02 [883] NES A Boy and His Blob (USA) by Aqfaq in 01:57.95 [934] SNES Mortal Kombat II (USA v1.0) by Samhain-Grim in 22:43.68 [941] SGB Pokémon Green (JPN v1.0) by Primorial#soup in 04:24.53 [955] NES "item glitch" Dragon Warrior 3 (USA) by dave_dfwm in 57:28.27 [1036] SNES "100 CDs" Rockman & Forte (JPN) by parrot14green in 42:19.82 Innovative TASes of 2007 - Something new: [784] NES "4 Player" Nightmare On Elm Street (USA) by chupapi in 16:15.75 [799] GBA Silent Scope (USA) by mmbossman in 05:29.28 [817] SNES "all items" Super Metroid (JPN/USA) by JXQ in 1:10:45.02 [848] SNES Super Mario Kart (USA) by Huffers in 23:10.88 [871] NES Mega Man 3, 4, 5 & 6 (USA) by Baxter & AngerFist in 39:06.92 [892] SNES "small only" Super Mario World (USA) by thegreginator & skamastaG in 1:19:55.65 [1013] NES River City Ransom (USA) by adelikat & JXQ in 12:55.38 Lucky TASes of 2007 - TASes with heavy luck manipuation involved: [766] NES Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! Please comment about any aspect of this. I am trying hard to make it something many people will enjoy participating in, rather than just something I like, but I may be doing things wrong. If so, please let me know! Hopefully this turns out to be fun :) [Edit by AngerFist: This topic just got Sticky!] [Edit nr 2 by AngerFist: Now its clean!]

There's a reason the Prince is a "sexist douchebag". It's because all this woman did was make him sit around, waiting for her ass to catch up. Sometimes he got so bored waiting that he committed suicide. That's women for you. Here is a list of places that the woman appeared useful, and the reason why this appearance is false. 1) Holding down various switches. Easily done by a crate later. Other objects that do this task better than a woman include rocks, staplers, and oxen. 2) Shooting an arrow at a target the size of a house about 10m away. That's like trying to successfully park a car in a garage, something else women are terrible at. 3) Using the teeter-totter like platforms. However, note that the prince makes it up there just fine without her help, after carting her ass up there. I guess she was too busy whoring around to learn how to double jump. That's why the prince calls her a hoe every time he double jumps. Call me hoe, you didn't know? I saw a few parts where I had ideas for alternate strategies, but I don't know the game so they're just viewer speculation at this point. Even so, it doesn't look sloppy by any means. The game has nice graphics and sound, some neat acrobatics, and a couple glitches help to make things interesting from a TASing perspective. It did drag on a bit toward the last quarter, having to fight so many enemies especially lended to that feeling.

AKA, please double check your list a lot more closely. You missed at least the following movies: Added [917] NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (USA) by adelikat in 16:33.5 (fcm, avi) Added [924] NES Tetris (USA) by Baxter in 03:29.67 (fcm, avi) The 2 SMB2 movies are not listed under Cardboard's name, only adelikat's Didn't credit Fabian with SDW Probably more... Also these additions will rearrange the list somewhat.

Haha Angerfist, I was confused for a second :) Ok, well I'll just post my idea in this thread then, and see where it goes. Here are some sample categories that might be interesting for some people: Speedy TASes of 2007 Glitchy TASes of 2007 Innovative TASes of 2007 Lucky TASes of 2007 Funny TASes of 2007 And by system, GBx TASes of 2007 Genesis TASes of 2007 N64 TASes of 2007 NES TASes of 2007 SMS TASes of 2007 SNES TASes of 2007 You could also do TASers by system, then maybe do some unofficial vote and have a TAS and TASer of 2007 overall. I actually wrote all this down a few weeks ago, but won't share my nominations yet :)

I noticed a few of the team movies were not on all the author's lists, and some were. Super Demo World-15, River City Ransom, and Legend of Zelda are examples that aren't, Mega Man X2 is an example of one that is. You're also jumping the gun, we have a couple weeks left in 2007 ;) I have a list of TAS (rather than TASer) award category ideas but I will post those in a separate thread so the discussion doesn't congeal. Edit: Also, if there is interest, we could nominate TASers of the year for NES, SNES, Gens, GBx, N64, and SMS.

YI2 - Less impressive than existing runs, though the koopa train was handled different. YI3 - really uninteresting, though I'm not sure what you could do. There was a small part where you ran off a ledge which removes super speed temporarily, not a big deal for a non-speedrun, but it just looks very ugly. YI4 - Interesting combination of the re-animated P-switch with Yoshi carry, but another level may have been better suited for showing this off. C1 - The first room was entertaining and different. The rest was the same as before. DP2b - The kill-an-enemy-and-eat-that-enemy is pretty neat to see (it makes a nice sound effect too, hehe). DS1b - I laughed when you did the fishglitch in water :D DSH - meh, I don't understand why you went this way, only to not fight Big Boo. That could be immensely entertaining. DS2 - Good stuff. I thought it would have been cool to get 1 star at the end. DS3 - Exactly like the existing 96 exit run except it stops in a few spots. DS4 - The way Fabian handles the enemies at the beginning near the pipes makes me wish for that in yours, instead of firepower here. Also running off the edge of slopes looks ugly. C2 - I enjoy the small-only run of this level tons more than this. The boss fight was great, though. VD1b - Again, the small-only run here is more entertaining than yours. Colors have also been done better...although there is a crazy constantly-changing color glitch that would be good in this run. VS1a - I *really* liked this level! VS2 - I also liked this level, though it looked a bit sloppy by tool assisted standards. VS3 - Boring. The level itself is not much for any type of run. VF - Really boring. I'm questioning your route now. BB1 - Small run is better again. This level drags on for me regardless, though. BB2 - I'll have to watch the 96-exit again, but I'm pretty sure they're similar. You used your lack of flight speed requirements to press forward more, so that helps. C4 - Secret room? Also, if you are interested in very fast climbing (not sure if that was your plan), check out Big Boo's Fortress from SDW. If you snag some ground while above the screen, it will follow you at full speed and you can perform the fast climbing even faster than you do here. FoI1a - Thank you for not doing this overdone glitch like last time. FoI2a - Idea for next time: Take the secret exit in FoI1, and then one-wall-walljump up the wall to reach the end of level doors. We found this not possible due to the vertical scrolling of SMW, but you are excellent at finding out new stuff, so it's worth a try. And water levels are boring. Overall I think your route through the forest world was not good for entertainment possibilities. FoI3b - Yay carrying three things! I wonder if the fact that two are springs makes this possible, as the spring halts your x-momentum when you pick one up. C5 - Nothing special in this level. CI1 - I laughed out loud at the sliding animation bopping through the level. :) Also excellent use of the pipe speed AND one-wall walljumping. Excellent level. CGH - Bleh. Nothing new here. CI2a - I thorougly enjoyed this level, and it's an excellent level for this type of run. CI3 - The level was mostly less impressive than the current runs, but the situation you created at the end was humorous. CF - When you got stopped by the last pair of spikes, all I could think was "poor planning". Your Reznor fights are excellent, though, and seem faster than existing runs. CI4 - You made some bad choices in the beginning but by the end of the level, it was pretty nice. CI5 - I liked this level last time and it did not disappoint. :) C6 - I found this very boring. SGS - Worse than last time. The falling is critical to do something fun, or it becomes very long and boring, like here. VoB1a - I preferred the published runs to either play of this level here. VoB2a - Neat trick, though this level still drags on for me. The small-only run is way better in this level. VGHa - I liked what you did in this level. VoB3 - This is like the small-only run except much sloppier and less entertaining. VoB4a - I'm not sure what to think of this level. It was alright. C7 - This level is done better in the small-only run. The boss fight was crazy, though! FD - Thank you for not picking the water door. Bowser - This was very unimpressive, I don't know what else to say. Every published run defeats Bowser in a more impressive way than this, even the small-only run. As before, there is not enough (although more than last time) here that isn't present in the existing published runs done in a more impressive manner, and being familiar with all of those made this run less entertaining. I vote no. Here's a link to the SMW small-only run since Genisto and Saturn (and most likely others) seem to be unaware of it. It does some neat stuff since a cape is absent.

Youse guys is the greatest :') For v2 (first post updated), I added functionality to disable which of the 3 bytes are written to during any given insert. This can be used, for example, to place input on Player 2 without affecting what's already on Player 1 for those frames. Also, you can see an example of this program's use in my Sub-Terrania submission. Edit: v2.1 fix - Bugfix; the bug allowed writing one extra frame past the end of the file. The download link has been updated.

The concept of this run, while slightly novel at first, is pretty hack-ish and lame. The fact that you are taking klmz's discovery and running to paste your name on all the other SMB movies is even lamer.

Will the fixed version still sync properly with movies recored with non-fixed versions?
Most movies should. The embedded savestate rarely affects the movie if it starts from power-on or reset, in my experience. One example of the contrary was removing the savestate from my Kirby's Adventure run - it desynced somewhere in the first couple levels. So I inserted a big batch of zeros where the savestate was, and did the run from there. My theory is that the battery back-up was saved somehow as well, affecting sync in minor ways. If adding a reset causes a desync, then the movie was basing something off of not having a reset, which is generally bad (for submitting movies here, at least). I've only had the "no-reset" happen to two of my FCM files (and one of Randil's), so it's not too common of a bug, and each time, adding the reset didn't cause a desync. Length checking doesn't change anything except how long the initial dialog box says the movie is.
Bisqwit wrote:
I'd prefer it start from poweron rather than reset, though.
Currently, if the first byte is 81h or 82h, it's considered good. If it's any other value, 82h is inserted, the rest of the input bumped forward 1 byte, and the "length of controller data" is increased by 1 byte. So it actually is inserting a power-on. I just often forget to make the "reset vs. power-on" distinction when talking about it. >< You might mean that movies with 81h should be changed to 82h. I didn't do it this way to be consistent with the submission script, but if the other way is preferred, I can update it. (Or, give an option for either.) I updated to v4 which now differentiates between reset and power-cycle, with the option to change a reset to a power-cycle if desired. I can host the source somewhere, if anyone is interested in it. I've updated this to a v3. Same link as above.
  • Separated reset-checking from savestate-removal. (Still does not remove the savestate if a movie is marked to start from it)
  • Fixed a bug where savestate-removal was causing an empty file in certain circumstances.
  • Focus remains on the same filename after applying any of the checks, for quick 1-2-3 testing.
If there are other things that someone would find handy with this tool, please let me know. If not, and if no bugs are found, this is probably the last update for this utility. Hopefully it's been helpful!

AKA, just because you say that every single movie you watch is improvable with absolutely zero proof or ideas, does not mean you know a damn thing about anything.
