In Ghost Valley 1 (or similar), this trick will work, or even getting a star and R-hopping works as well. If it's something like cutting a corner on Bowser Castle (?), then you need a feather, because you can't R-hop over the stone walls. I am looking foward to a level like Vanilla Lake or Koopa Beach with some wicked water skipping perhaps to save time. Hopefully it works out that way.

I typically cannot get into fighting game time attacks, although I played SSF2 a lot. That being said, this is a very well put together and entertaining run. Voting yes. Vega round 2 was my personal favorite fight. Ha heh heh heh heh (Zangief laugh)

I have an idea - let's bitch back and forth about whether or not a theory of computing that is still in its early stages, not yet fully understood, and that may or may not be seriously implemented long after all of us are dead can solve a group of extremely complex and gigantic problems. Or we can stay on topic instead!! YAY I'd be interested in Battletoads, because it seems like a new time-saving glitch is found every time a new run is done.

The health you lose would be during the hit that this trick is trying to minimize the time of in the first place. But unless the weapon is out that is needed (air in this example), it may not be worth the time to switch weapons.

You are mistaken, they did not both have stars at first. BC had a star, which was lost to UK, and after "arguing" (discussion), BC was also given its own star. I am aware of what happened, as I made the first comment about the situation in this forum, and my input was directly involved.

I agree. To clarify, I am saying that the shorter SMW run is more fitting for a star than the longer SMW run, but not simply because it's the shorter run. This being said, the length of the Final Fantasy or SMRPG runs shouldn't automatically make them bad.

I watched the video again...to me, the only levels that stood out were Tubular, Chocolate Secret...maybe the Ghost Ship, too.

It wasn't always this way. Discussion in this forum is what made it that way.

I agree with this, but I also think that average length movies are better (generally). And for new people, I would think this attitude would be even more common.

SNES Super Mario World (USA) in 1:23:38 by Tim Offermann (aka. VIPer7). Total AVI downloads: 6568
This run has been up for 70 days as of 6/11/05. 6568 / 70 = 93.82 per day. The 13-goal run has been up for for 13 days as of 6/11/05. So to do a fair comparison of the two videos, take however many AVI downloads this video has gotten and divide it by 13. Even this isn't a great comparison though, cuz the short run is much faster to download. Plus, seeing as how the entry does have a star, it's likely to get more downloads simply because of that. Like I said, it's not that I think the large video isn't popular, but I think that the short video has the same amount of "wow" factor to it in a fraction of the time. If a newbie likes the short run, they will likely watch the long run as well, starred or not (unless they don't like long runs). I honestly figured I was in the minority feeling this way, but I just wanted to make sure.

What does everyone think of the current Super Mario World scenario? Personally, I feel that both runs don't need stars. The *96 run is very good...I don't know if I thought it was quite star material, but many others did. Now I'm not saying this run isn't optimized or anything like that, but I can see someone new getting a little bored after a while watching it, with all the flying, and playing some levels twice...just things that are bound to happen with an optimized *96 run of this game. The 13-goal run is phenomenal. Several jaw-dropping tricks to save time that just look awesome, and let's not forget the Big Boo fight. This run finds great tricks to get by before getting the cape is possible, and doesn't play too many levels with it to where flying becomes repetitive. So what I'm saying is that the *96 run is great, but just not ideal for a star, especially with the 13-goal run completed so well. And if we're going to take stars from BC cuz UK is similar, well then why should we have two runs of the same game on our star list? I know that some will disagree here, but that's the point - I'm just trying to bring it to everyone's attention to see what the rest of you think.

any other speed run recommendations?
Well if you like the Sonic runs, there is another fast run with Sparkster for SNES. There is a link on the main page for the best (starred) movies, that's a good place for someone new to start. I also highly recommend the NES Bionic Commando (called Hitler no Fukkastu here) video, the SNES Super Mario World shorter video, and the NES Battletoads 2-Player Warpless (which is not starred). There are quite a few other good runs, but these have the biggest sense of speed that I can remember. And don't worry, we were all new once.

Here's a hilarious page about this very great story (and other game intros): http://www.seanbaby.com/nes/intro.htm But the Ninja Gaiden page is the best on that site: http://www.seanbaby.com/nes/ninjagai.htm "There used to be some myth that came out in the eighties about ninjas being sneaky or something. Wrong. That is Western propaganda spread by shitty American martial arts movies. A true ninja just runs around on the streets in broad daylight and makes dogs explode with their sword." EDIT: Editing my post, although I'm not sure why.

For the actual character to be cool, it helps to be able to get into the story. Now I can thorougly enjoy a game with no story (or no plausible story, Blaster Master), but that doesn't mean I like the character. Although I have a blast playing Sonic, I don't think he's too cool. Although I do like Tails, but I always root for the underdog. Or Fox. Wow that was bad. Alucard is awesome because of his cool voice. (Like when Death takes his weapons at the beginning and he goes "WHAT?") And if someone's theme music is awesome, I tend to like them more as well. Zero's theme in X3, and Magus's theme are a couple examples. And I've always been a huge fan of Kitana from MK. Very mad that she wasn't in the newest one (Deception?). She has an awesome story, her weapons are cool, she kicks ass, and she is hot.

I don't think Super Smash TV can be that hard to make.
Just that there are so many buttons to press at once, having an X and Y button as well, and with the way the controls for that game are set up. However I've never done a 2-player run (or 1-player for that matter) and so Battletoads looks pretty tough to do as well. I hope you're right! Then hopefully a run will surface eventually.

Because what we do here is so much different than what people do without tools.
I guess I should have specified labelling within our own community, my bad. We have the term Tool Assisted Speedrun (even if it's too long, and TAS is "difficult to pluralize"). Why call it seven different things if it's just going to further confuse people, especially when the original goal of this topic was to reduce confusion in the first place? And asking the general population to change how they refer to something / someone is just a waste of time, in my opinion. How many people thought it was stupid when Puff Daddy told everyone "my new name is P. Diddy, so call me that now"? (Or does no one here listen to hip-hop besides me...) And with that, I'm done posting here.

Super Smash TV would make an incredible run. But it's got to be hard as hell to do (especially 2-player), and this is more of a "cult classic" game than a classic. But hey, that works, right?

Yeah really. We could call them "Superplay (http://tasvideos.org/WhyAndHow.html if you don't understand) Videos" but if people don't take a little initiative to find out exactly what these videos are, then there is no magic name that satisfies everyone. If people don't understand and don't want to go and find what's going on, then let them be confused. I personally think Superplay is a great name. I have no problem with Time Attack or TAS either. They are what they are - why the hell has labelling become so important? Also I think cheatyface runs would be a sweet name.

Wow, the two deaths for P2 I missed were the VERY FIRST TWO. Maybe I was eating some Cheez-Its instead of watching the first level or something.

10 deaths for Player 1, 17 for Player 2 (if anyone was wondering). Fastest or not, this is my favorite Battletoads video. Vote = yes

Backin' up BoMF on this one. The objective here is to create entertaining movies. Although the length of the input may be shorter in the first case, the movie itself will be shorter in the second.

The Sonic3&K run to me is more impressive because of the way the different shields are used and the screen-scrolling glitch. Plus there is no Sky Chase zone to suffer through with its slowness and goofy ass music. However, the Sonic 2 run is also very impressive. I think both of the stars are justified. We have Super Mario 1, 2, and 3 with stars, so why not both Sonic movies? (And Xebra's current Sonic 1 WIP is looking very star-worthy as well, may I add) And if a newbie (geez I hate that stupid term) comes here, and sees Sonic 2, and Sonic 3&K with stars, they will probably pick whichever game they liked better, or played more. This way, having both games starred is probably the best option, since both of these games were very popular.

I doub it, since he doesn't have the X-ray scope yet. Unless getting the X-ray scope early allows for some huge time saving later. Who knows. Just when you think a game can't be glitched anymore....wow.

Is there a spot you could get another feather without losing time? I'm thinking perhaps by hitting another flashing-red super koopa in Donut Plains 1. The setup I'm thinking of though, there are three regular super koopas above in a bad spot. It may be possible. But unless you are getting hit toward the very end of the thwomp / spikes, you wouldn't be able to get the other feather after being hit anyway without losing time.

Can you pause and switch to Item-1 while an Item-2 is on screen? I don't think you can, but I'm not sure and am currently to lazy to test :-P

That was the most entertaining Snake Pit play I've seen. Punting the yellow toad into the exit in the first room had me rolling! Oh and the rest of this run also looks phenomenal. This game was practically made for tool-assisted movies. Would you mind explaining the trick you used on rat blarg / any idea what causes it?

I always have had the problem of StarFox running faster on my emulator than it should, so fast that I can't play it, yet the audio does not speed up. The opening scene with the Arwings flying through the tunnel doesn't sync up with the sound of the guy saying "[unrecognizable speech] prepare for launch." Sucks cuz I really like this game! Although personally I don't think it'd make a great movie. Starfox 64 might, because it has a more advanced system of keeping score. Not that we have re-recording N64 emulators just lying around, but yeah.

Top Five: 5. Castlevania 3 (Sypha route) http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=58 Might be longer than the Alucard route, but it's much more varied and entertaining. All I seem to remember about the Alucard video is waiting for those stupid orange blocks to be dissolved. 4. Super Mario 2 http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=309 I love watching Birdo get his/her shit RUINED. Lots of glitches, and more importantly, the glitches are all very USEFUL. 3. Battletoads (1-player) http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=310 Can you tell I like glitched videos yet? Walking up most of level 8 was hilarious the first time I saw it. 2. Mega Man 2 http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=306 An already great video, made much faster with super precise glitching. Bravo. 1. Bionic Commando http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=268 This video will never be dethroned. It's the perfect game for this type of movie.
