Slightly relevant, and mostly for hero of the day: If going for real time, the turn-around jump into Ridley's room is slower than just running through the doorway. (At least it is according to my spreadsheet, which I didn't start separating real and in-game time until a bit later in my run) Taco = awesome user name.

Damn, I thought this was a shoe-in for publication. :/ Bummer.

SNES9x 1.51 adds approximately 10 frames to each door transition, for "more accurate emulation". I just did the following: 1) Opened SNES9x 1.43, Super Metroid. 2) Turned on my SNES, Super Metroid. 3) Went to the landing site on both games, opened the right door, cleared out the speed blocks, and walked all the way to the left, against the closed door there. 4) Began pressing "right" on my SNES controller and my Logitech USB controller. 5) Listened for discrepancies in closing door sound effect after traversing this long room and the short tube afterwards (which required to extra button presses). I had corresponding speakers on each side of me. (Yay stereo) Now, these aren't conclusive tests I did obviously, and I did each one a few times, also doing visual checks to make sure I was pretty in-sync throughout that first room. SNES vs. SNES9x 1.43 - sound effect was very very close, to the point that I was unable to determine which was first. (I had guesses, but no way to see if they were right) SNES vs SNES9x 1.51 - sound effect was less than but nearly one full sound-effect length slower on SNES9x 1.51 than the console. Approxiamately 1/3 of a second, which is 20 frames, which is 2 door transitions at 10 frames extra apiece. Don't take my word for it though - especially if you know a more accurate way of testing, then please test it out yourself!

The only thing I can think of that would be slower when getting the X-ray on the way to Maridia is waiting for the power bomb to go off when initially entering the room. Am I missing something, or is this enough to offset the gains from this strategy?

Neato. :) How long does it take to run this entire process for a modest-sized (20 minutes or so) movie (that isn't GB, so colors > 4)?

Yeah really, what do you think this game is, Metroid or something?

By the way, here's a video link to that palingraph rap: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mijso1_okjk&eurl= That is crazy wordplay, I'm very impressed. Edit: Page break made me not realize that this video was already linked to. I thought PJ Boy just posted the lyrics for fun. D'oh

If you're having fun, keep doing it! If not, find something else that is fun. Just remember that whether or not your run is published doesn't have to change how much you enjoy TASing. Since you have a lot of free time, and some interest, you may find that using this time to persevere through the initial learning stages of TASing can make it more fun later. As to which game you should do, I would recommend OoT again. If you do another game first, the initial TASing experience will be helpful, but you will still have to get the hang of this game, instead of having knocked both of them out at the same time. Also, if you try another emulator first, you may not want to return to Mupen. <_<

At least one enemy doesn't follow this constraint, though, as I got a Super Missile after Crocomire's area with 29 energy on the v2 100% run.

The fact that the "Bad Reasons to Publish" page is being linked to as a response to other's opinions of a movie is getting old quickly. There are more valid reasons to be in favor of publishing a movie than your own.

Fast levels were yes. Autoscrollers were good, but too many of them makes them meh. Graphics and especially sound are quite good for the Genesis. Giant robot pig who thrusts his pelvis forward to attack = giant win. Boss who you fight by getting in his spare giant attack pig = win^2. Amount of bosses = ridiculous. It got a little monotonous at the end due to that, but overall the plusses smack the minuses, and I vote yes.

Does Mupen even have a built-in screenshot function? It seems that suggested screenshots are always larger and/or blurry, as though they were taken by some other method, like printscreen+paint.

Ah, then my idea wouldn't really fit. Looking closer at CommonTricks, it already does much of what I suggested anyway (linking to example movies for each concept), so I guess I just need to read more carefully.

I know you all love when I post in this topic. If the stars are truly supposed to be movies for new watchers, then they need a complete revamp. (The front page only says "recommended movies" now though, so perhaps the definition has changed.) The Common Tricks page talks about many of the common staples of TASing, such as
  • Speed abuse
  • Collision abuse
  • Luck manipulation
  • Damage abuse
  • Invulnerability abuse
  • Left+right/up+down
  • Boss fighting
  • 2-player abuse (I added this one)
Pick stars by movies which show these and other TAS concepts to their fullest. For example, starring Dragon Warrior is excellent for this type of star system because it shows luck manipulation to the extreme, or Excitebike for speed abuse, or SNES Zelda for L+R/U+D abuse, or Kabuki Quantum Fighter for damage abuse, or Mario 64 for collision abuse. Don't worry about if a movie is more entertaining or liked or other things like that, because we have the rating system now for that purpose.

This run was a surprise. Mostly because there wasn't 150 new pages of zzzzzzzzzzz in the N64 forum.

Laff :D I'm never able to watch runs of this game on the emulator, but if this much time was saved and it's still got a bunch to optimize, then that can only be a good sign for the long run.
