nitsuja, were you able to find memory addresses related to the p-meter, besides the variable that says how many arrows are filled? I looked for it a while back with no success. I imagine those addresses would be helpful with an improvement of this run.

Also, from what I remember from Genisto, those trucks weren't manipulable which gives an advantage for the US version.
We weren't able to manipulate them either, except for taking a different route, which is not really manipulation. I feel it is entertaining and unexpected to glitch through a truck on the world map, and as a bonus, the same overhead stage is not played back-to-back.
I don't see the supposed harder parts in US version.
Cardboard outlined several examples in this post. I feel no need to re-re-explain it to you, as I would rather just take your "no" vote and end the discussion.

Could a more significant overall improvement have been gained using the original rom?
Yes. The version differences altogether (text speed, route change, scene change) favor the (J) version by about 22 seconds. If a comparable map route was found on (J), that would make it even faster. We actually didn't know if we would be faster than the previous run or not when we started. It was a nice goal to aim for.

I don't actually expect that screenshot to be considered for a published movie. I just thought it was funny. I find the dialogue to be very humorous. What can I say? Badly translated English brings me smiles. This isn't awful like Zanac awful, but the sentences often don't seem to "fit" into the situation. It's not the funniest thing in the world, but it is entertaining. If anything, switching versions placed a burden on the process. That doesn't imply that it's more fun to watch; it simply means that there is extra work to be done when comparing two versions, and we have done that extra work, putting the two compared runs on equal ground. The submission text was written as clearly as we know how. Everything about the version switch is right there in it, including the rules that we are not breaking, and so if someone does not understand the reason for a switch, I'm not sure how else to word it. I thought, like many probably did, that the (J) version was indeed a more difficult version. I thought this primarily because of the previous movie's description. But during the TAS, we saw instances of changes that did not make sense to the goal of making the game easier for a different version. I really don't know why these things were changed. Cardboard listed some of the examples of differences that were not in our favor, but if you watch both runs, you can find many more. It is also listed in the submission text that the estimated difference due to in-level version switching is 60 to 90 frames in favor of the (U) version. If anyone is not entertained by the movie, I encourage them to exercise their right to vote no, and to explain why they don't like it. That's the important part to remember, if they wish to be taken seriously.

It's also worth mentioning that having Ceres at the beginning is a cruel introduction to TASing this game. Both of your guys' TAS show promise. Everyone starts out inexperienced :)

Well the Rules do say "or the ROM is superior (or a language change)". There are several other places with oddly translated dialogue as well that is pretty humorous. Edit: Example of a version/language change that was accepted.

I think this is an excellent addition to the site. Everyone has an easy-to-view portfolio. I still think a user rank is unnecessary, but I know I am in the minority. Nonetheless, I have an idea for it. To base the ranks on combinations of several qualities would quickly lead to a lot of classifications, which could be overwhelming. However, basing the rank on more than one thing is a good idea, as there are many ways to contribute to this site. My idea is to model the ranks after that personality test I don't remember the name of, with Introvert/Extrovert, Thinking/Feeling, etc., with each category representing a different way of contribution. As an example, ways of contributing to the site could include: 1) watching and rating movies 2) posting 3) editing site wiki pages (not homepages?) 4) submitting movies (or movies published?) Each could be given two values that would represent smaller and larger contribution in that category. (Perhaps a third value would be appropriate for zero contribution from that category.)
               Watch/Rate PostCount/Ratio Editing/Creating MoviePub/Sub
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zero/Low Watching Quiet Reading Member
Below average Rating Talking Editing Player
Above average Reviewing Talkative Writing Robot
I'm still using player/robot because I can't think of something better at the moment - just trying to illustrate the concept. So someone who has submitted a couple runs, rated a relatively small amount of movies, who posts a lot, and isn't an editor, would be a Rating Talkative Reading Player. (Wow that sounds kind of silly, I think I needed to pick better words...) Upsides:
  • This is less like a "rank" to me, and more like a classification.
  • Recognizes many people for their contributions, yet doesn't divide people into more classifications than necessary.
Downsides:
  • Still, a lot of different classifications.
  • The ranks will be long, unless abbreviated like the personality test.
  • Isn't intuitive - especially if abbreviated. It could probably use its own explanation page.
The categories, classifications, order, and numbers of anything here are just examples of the overall idea. Just kicking the ball around...feel free to comment on any aspect of it.

I didn't think that FCM kept movie data past the end-of-file like SMV does when you rerecord over an earlier portion...so where does this utility get that data from in the broken movie file? (Or am I wrong with FCM?)

Well..thank you everyone, these are very kind words :) Randil and Fractal are correct; I don't like ranks such as ninja, and I definitely do not wish to have one myself. If this view upsets anyone, I'm sorry. I just don't feel that it will have any positive effect for the site if I were to be given this rank.

does anyone know what "ninja" really means anymore?
From Seanbaby's Ninja Gaiden page: "There used to be some myth that came out in the eighties about ninjas being sneaky or something. Wrong. That is Western propaganda spread by shitty American martial arts movies. A true ninja just runs around on the streets in broad daylight and makes dogs explode with their sword." :D

Why couldn't you just update the submission? Its quite off putting to post another submission with a minor improvement made to it.
1) It uses a completely different strategy for the beginning half. 2) It is 25 seconds faster than his previous submission. At a total length of 210 seconds, this time is an 8% improvement. This isn't 10 frames at the end of a movie we're talking here (which is the example given in the Submission Instructions). What's so annoying for you about someone else submitting a new run instead of updating, anyway?

While I don't claim I'm great, good, or even not awful at that game, I don't think 100% of the problem can be placed on the player just because there are others who are better at it. I'm also a bad driver!

Imprecise may not be the best word, but everything seems to move faster due to that increased gravity, which gives you less reaction time than the original in all sorts of spots. I realize this could be argued that it's not a control problem, but I don't feel like splitting hairs. Stuff was changed which makes the game harder to control.

I understand that an intended feature could be seen as a problem by some and not by others. I disagree that the control scheme is good, or precise. The speed enhancing items (Speed Booster, Screw Attack..are there others?) are just as hard to control, and I have played later parts of the game some, mostly to try these features out. And if the controls are bad for the first 1/3 of the game, I have no incentive to play the rest of it. Everyone telling me how great it would be if I just kept playing does not count as incentive. That's just another quality that Redesign took from Metroid Prime :P

Yes, and the enemies' resistance to certain beams is also noteworthy here. Fortunately, Beam Combo solved the problem with beams' instackability.
It's nice to see game include a solution to one of its own problems, rather than just remove the problem. I think many of these features in Redesign that resemble Metroid Prime do so extremely well. The control one has over Samus in Redesign is pretty close to the level of control in Prime - exceedingly poor.

I actually would prefer that the currently published run would be removed. Perhaps if there weren't so many "Boring, but an improvement, so I vote yes" votes, then this option would be considered more seriously. It's important to remember that there is no site rule that says an improvement should be considered differently than a new submission when casting a vote.

evilchen, you aren't doing wrong - it's better to voice your opinion than to just go with the majority. But it is good that you posted how you feel about it, even if you didn't vote. However, no one should have to worry about people taking votes against their movie personally, otherwise the voting system has hidden majority bias.

I'm not sure how the darkness works on the game, but Backspace is default for toggling some type of graphic clipping, and I think 9 is default for transparency toggling. Give them a shot to see if they help anything.
