Just wanted to ask encoders to consider disabling the PSG High Quality sound option when encoding so that the jumping sound effect sounds correct (unless there's some new version of Gens that fixed this that I'm not using).

There is a subtle(?) difference between this thread and individual threads, and that's that people can ask others questions here who never intended to answer questions, whereas before it was clear who was interested in answering questions. I mean, it's the off topic section. That being said, let the spam continue. jimsfriend, R U NOOB?

I had a reason to create mine and I think that reason was good enough to warrant such a thread.
I think you should have another moderator to lock Flygon's thread because this sentence is silly. Anyway, would it really be a problem to allow the "Ask [etc]" threads to run rampant? This is the off-topic thread, after all. The more interesting discussions will float to the top as is the way forums work. Shrug.

You never know when the next newcomer could learn and become great. Not everyone will decide to persevere through being ridiculed. Some of you treat new people like shit. It's sad. For example, Glitchman also got treated poorly by some when he first arrived, and IMO we're lucky he stuck it out and developed into quite a TASer. Keep in mind that these runs are made by people and not autonomous bots awaiting to provide you with perfect (and encoded) videos. (And I realize how silly it may seem to hear this from me, with all of my past arguments/ridicule. Hypocrite, etc. But I sure could have benefitted from taking this advice several years ago.)

I am surprised that this route change only saves a few seconds. Maybe more with improvements on SSW and/or DW2b which potentially looked the most improvable but that's only based on my casual watching. I think a lot of the aesthetic choices in the run were poor, or lazily done, but I also may scrutinize this game's style more than average because of my familiarity with this game and also growing up alongside grandpa fabian's innovative style. I'm also bummed that MSW is gone, but in a way, I think all has been done with that level that can be done, so maybe it's fortunate to be able to leave it behind. I encourage you to work on an improvement. I was going to say that if you didn't then someone else likely would soon, but I thought the same thing about the last one that we did, and it's been 3.5 years (holy crap!) since then. Voted meh.

The majority of the time difference here is on the final boss - you could probably gain 40 seconds or so on him. However, there are a other places that have mistakes that should be caught during a TAS - for example, you take damage in level 6 when trying to hit an enemy, and some boss hits don't happen as early as they could. It also seems like jumping in the overhead levels slows everything down a bit - I didn't notice that before (and haven't confirmed it, just looks slower). I wonder if the earlier bouncing balls in the first level's boss chamber can be reflected forward and used against the boss or not. I don't remember trying that. If you're interested in TASing another Skate or Die game, I bet the NES version has some improvements hiding in it :)

I prefer this route over the glitched route, though both have their good sides. Good: - Overall, the run moves at a fast and varied pace. - Technically well executed run, from what I can remember about the game. - "New" boss fighting allows some of the more boring parts of the previous run to be skipped (getting the lightning book, for example). - You can angle an L-button jump?! *embarrass* - Better and more consistent use of dash/slide/whip launch in various places than I did in my run. - Taking the knife for the pendulum room really helped there. Not sure: - You hit the ceiling in several spots when doing a L-button jump that seem to be slower than the alternative, but it's possible that they are indeed faster. (Two examples I recall were breaking the wall in castle B just below the entrance (gold-colored room), and getting Dracula's eye.) - A couple of the dive-kicks that are clipped by walls seem as though they could wait a short time and dive-kick later to get the horizontal velocity as well. No specific examples come to mind, and this didn't happen much, so it may just be perception is not equal to reality. Bad: - Although the boss fights are better, they are still true Castlevania boss fights that are over very quickly, sometimes without looking like it took much effort. (An exception to this was the fight with Death which I thought was very well done.) - There is one small improvement that could be made throughout - when entering a door, you currently dash up to it, stop the dash 1 frame before pressing left or right to trigger the "door open". However, if you stop the dash a bit earlier and walk toward the door for 2 or 3 frames, you hit the door with a strange type of momentum that slides you forward for a few more frames as the door opens, and the screen will fade to black a couple frames quicker. If done throughout the run, you may save 1 second, so it's nothing to get worked up about, just something to note for future runs. Even if every improvement here is actually correct, there wouldn't be much time to gain. Maybe 5 seconds? Either way, I vote yes.

PS: Guanobowl, you can warp from 3-1 to 3-2 directly, you're not crazy... the only thing is that it requires a game over. Unfortunately, this cannot save time.
Could you explain why/how this works? I checked the SMB2 tricks page but it seems somewhat out of date with this and the recent any% submission. Oh, and to sing with the choir: this was impressive.

I feel the exact opposite of cp. The run has an illegitimate feel to it that's tough to describe. The new techniques, which mostly consist of plasma+xray on bosses, are different but not entertaining to watch (similar to boss battles from GBA Castlevania games - they're over before they get started). The techniques in many rooms seem less "clever" than a legitimate run, even if they aren't in an existing run. Switching from "I just got bombs" straight to "Armed to the teeth" removes a lot of the interim states that have different and interesting techniques for maneuvering about. And I think it's obvious that this code was intentionally added as a debug code.

I've shown my music several times on this forum so I guess you could call me a musician. But really I don't feel like I have a natural talent for the "music" part of it - so maybe that is more "in my thoughts". What I mean is that I can (or used to be able to) work on making an instrumental, and it can turn out decent, but it takes me a lot of time, trial and error, and it's rarely exactly as I envisioned it. So I get by, but the beats are more complete in my thoughts than they sound when actually constructed. On the other hand, with writing lyrics and reciting them, I feel that I have a real knack for that, and it comes much more naturally to me. So lately I've focused on only that portion of it, using existing music to rap over, and it's been very enjoyable. Recent example.

Perhaps not exactly what you were looking for, but "Down+Jump = Slide" sure caught on after Mega Man 3 (I think) introduced it.

Rap sucks lol! FYI I understand this is a joke (at least hopefully I'm not misinterpreting), but it's worth a little rant here for extra hemlig skoj. I've heard it all. It wasn't popular here when I was in school to listen to rap. Many people still feel their need to give me their two cents when they hear that I either listen to rap or make my own. Most of these people are older and I assume have difficulty understanding viewpoints other than their own. Some of the things I've often heard: Rap doesn't use real instruments. Rap is just talking; anyone can do that. Rap always has violent, misogynistic, or ignorant content. Most of the people who seriously believe these things have not listened to much rap. Not that everyone must like any genre of music, but most of the time people try to justify not liking it without having heard much. If someone doesn't like it, they don't need a reason. Giving one makes me wonder why they feel the need to justify it. There are a lot of good things about the genre that I'd like to point out. You can say much more in the same amount of time due to the faster cadence compared to most other genres. Rappers write their own lyrics more often than I think most other genres of music, which allows for more personal subject matter IMO. The available "instruments" to production in hip-hop is only limited to the producer's imagination, rather than a band's instrument set. As far as how "musical" something like this is, keep in mind that I put a lot more work into this than just talking into a microphone. I wrote the lyrics, composed the beats, and did the mixing for these songs. Plus, I think that vocal delivery requires a sense of rhythm (and pitch sometimes), and practice - much like singing or playing a musical instrument. Ultimately, it's in the eye of each individual, so I don't hold your opinion against you. Mostly because I like you, though :P

Is there a need/want for using youtube subtitles for youtube encodes of TASes? I created a program to help with adding subtitles to the videos in this playlist. I'm not sure if it would be necessary, as there are likely less subtitles for most of these videos, but it could be helpful. The basic idea I tried to accomplish with this program was:
  • Paste all the subtitles in that I want into it (one on each line)
  • Click a button to start a timer (coinciding with when the video starts)
  • Click a "next" button each time the next subtitle is to come up as I watch the video
  • Text is auto-created in youtube's subtitle format with the times that you clicked the button for each subtitle line.
This format is a real pain to do manually, especially if you've got a lot of subtitles, so this saved me a ton of time with the playlist above. I still need to clean this code up a bit, but would this be useful to anyone? (It's also very possible that there is an existing program that does this much better than I did. Feel free to link to that here if so!)

I've put the album I did a couple years ago (Myself, thread here) on my youtube account, so anyone can listen to it fully without having to buy it first. Also, each of the songs/videos also has subtitles with the lyrics, so hopefully it helps those of you who don't have English as your first language, who don't listen to rap, or have trouble keeping up with my cadence. Just click the CC button to see them. JXQ - Myself (playlist)

Hi klmz, nice run here, although it's a bit strange. These out-of-bounds ones usually are, though. Does anyone know if there is an explanation somewhere of the specifics of luck manipulation in this game for getting souls and drops? I think it'd be an interesting read.

Fabian, Let's say that we exist in a world where all of our perceptions of color are different - for example, a photo negative, although that doesn't have to be the permutation from current color to new color. We could just as easily "cycle" up the rainbow one color and leave brown, black etc. the same. One question that comes to mind is: would the colors would all have the same names they do now, or all have the name of the color they used to be, or a mix of the two? Could that vary between languages? Wandering down that thought road, you might wonder if we even all see the actual same shade or not for each color, and have just become used to our view and learned our color definitions that way. Even something outlandish such as if our brains are built in a way to take these different brain-mapped colors and turn them into the mostly-pleasing colors we see today is completely unanswerable and mostly stupid but a pretty out-there question nonetheless. However, all of those questions pale in comparison to the most interesting question I can think of in this context, which is what I'm "officially" asking you in this thread: R U NOOB?
