They are never equivalent. As I stated above, No Death is negative while Best Ending is positive.
In this game: Best Ending implies No Death. No Death implies Best Ending. This is a biconditional which implies equivalence. Regardless of the "feel" of the tags.

Just because one somewhat leads to the other for this one situation does not mean that the trend should be broken.
Wow. WOW. You are amazing. No death leads to best ending in this game. Not somewhat. It's the determining factor.
Otherwise, any movie that has 'takes damage to save time' should automatically not have the 'aims for fastest time'
I would not be opposed to doing away with the "aims for fastest time tag" since it's on the vast majority of the runs, the Why&How, and is the fundamental goal in nearly every movie here.
I don't see why people aren't up in arms about the "Ignores semi-important goals in the game" tag
I don't like that tag either.

I'm not saying Best Ending and No Death are identical in all cases. I'm saying in this game, they are equivalent tags. The reason is seen by answering this question: Q: "How do you get the best ending?" A: "By not dying." Perhaps I think this is silly because browsing by "Best Ending" is probably the last thing I'm going to do on this site.

Wow. Yes. It's a crime against humanity. Wow. If you have twelve tags on a run, it screws up the format of the movie and it's kind of stupid looking, especially when you are saying the same thing in different words. (inserts obligatory "in my opinion", which really should be assumed by this point) So, as I stated verbatum before, it's a crime against humanity and should be punished with public stoning. No exceptions. Your avatar moves a lot.

Tags like "no death", and in this game's case "best ending", are redundant and unecessary in my opinion. Of course you aren't going to die in a TAS unless it saves time. And if not dying gives you the best ending, then of course you're going to end up getting it since you aren't dying to save time. How many more ways can we indicate the same thing? Xkeeper[edit]: Give me a break.

Well, if "no death" implies "best ending", do we really need both tags anyway? Or is there another requirement for this ending I'm not aware of?

I thought there was some extra scene at the end with Marin for 0 deaths. But I haven't checked it myself.

Perhaps the solution is for the less knowledgable folk to pm people who would know the answers to their questions. It certainly would cut down on the clutter in the thread.
It's human nature to not ask questions because one would often feel dumb. But the reality is that there are probably many more people with the same question, who now know the answer thanks to comicalflop asking, and Kroxien answering. But the "veterans and newbies" comment made me chuckle since many of the OoT contributers were never on this board before this run was started. And the SDA Zelda topic isn't cluttered??

I always figured even a good run of this game would be somewhat boring due to repetition, even though I really like the music of this game. Boy was I wrong! This looks great so far. Hopefully these crazy performances can last throughout and remain entertaining.

Some fraction of a pixel. Otherwise Sonic would be moving at 1500 pixels per frame, and the screen only has 320 pixels across, so...

I can't believe so many people are this opinionated about the situation. Especially since I don't really give a damn, and I'm always bitching about something.

I actually did these files from my current run, and then just hex-edited them into individual files for easier viewing, which is why the re-record count is 0. Fear my real-time skills. !!!!

I find this as entertaining as Monopoly, and as remarkable, for pretty much the same reasons.

Alrighty New Front Door - 111 frames faster New Donut Secret House - 43 frames slower! + the best Big Boo fight ever Edit: taking Door 7 was tested, and it is 36 frames slower than Door 5. Skipping the feather in SW4 saves only 26 frames so Door 5 is still the fastest. If that last spike could be passed...

Very nice idea Arne! I really hope that going in Door #7 is faster (or better yet, Door #5 skipping all the spikes!)

If it's boring, don't publish it. Don't still publish it and put it in a seperate section in an effort to stay on the fence about its validity.

It's definitely an option worth considering (going for in-game time), especially now that we have the memory watcher to keep track of in-game time just like a frame counter. But personally it's not my instinctive choice. It's a pain, because in certain ways I'd like to go for real time and certain ways I'd like to go for in-game time. An example of going for in-game that I prefer is a door entrance that is very high on the screen (the entrance to the room before the speed booster is an example). The more the screen is moved up before entering the door, the more real time can be saved, because the game scrolls the door up to the middle very slowly once it's entered. But I didn't do this in my previous run because it looks sloppy. I also like that I could do more stunts during waiting scenes if I didn't have to worry about lag (and I could watch Crocomire boil). Examples of going for in-game that I don't like include things like switching off the hi-jump boots, the different way of getting the first set of missiles in Brinstar, and things that cause a lot of lag like using plasma on Crocomire. I'd have to do more testing like you said to see how likely it would be to lower the in-game timer by aiming for it first, and how likely it would be aiming for real game time. I also have to figure out how you are 2.5 seconds ahead of me :) But I do think it's worth the effort even if the in-game timer isn't improved. While it's neat to have a good time at the end, the fun of the run for me is the precision of the playing.

Thanks guys! I hope to do a version 2 of this run somewhat soon, after I get a couple other projects completed (and started, heh). Although I don't think I could improve the in-game timer, it definitely would still be noticeable in the finished product.

I don't think there will be a substantially larger amount of people interested in TAS just because N64 enters the fray. However, as the current systems libraries dwindle, new games will look more and more appealing. However many newer games don't work as well for TASing, even ones that are throwbacks to old genres, like 2-D platformers. Many games like this have elaborate cutscenes between and during levels in order to make gamers of today feel like the game has more of a point. None of that mattered back then, and so the older movies are all action. A large amount of Ocarina of Time's TAS is talking. Contrast this to the original NES Zelda TAS, where the action is nearly constant from beginning to end. To summarize, I think Mukki is right when saying that N64 TASing will become a big part of the site once it takes off. But I'm not happy about that. :(

If this needs to be put in the concept demos, then why not Monopoly as well? I don't understand the difference.

The N64 TAS's so far don't strike me as fast character movement, especially compared to some of the faster 2-D games. They are smoother in some ways, although I tend to disagree because of framerate.
