I remember around 1993, finding a new version of SF2 at a local mini-golf/water-park that had an arcade with this crazy title screen. I watched some of the demo, and saw you could throw fireballs in the air, with super-slow or super-fast speed, and the computer could change characters at will (I never knew that you could do the same with the Start button!). I even wrote down the order of the colors in the SF2 logo because it was so crazy looking! I played it a couple times and I remember the computer turning into Bison, which put him through his cape-throw animation like at the beginning of round 1, and I kicked him during it which killed him. I got a perfect and it was 80K instead of 30K, yay programming error I understood! What a crazy version for Capcom to make! Soon it dawned on me that I read something about this in GamePro recently. The article explained how SF2:Turbo it was just various tweaks added to the SF2:CE engine. It also explained how there were other similar upgrades floating around, creating "illegal" Street Fighter 2 machines. What a crazy world, thought the child me at the time. Who would do something illegal? Yet here I was, playing one of those versions. Keep in mind that I'm around 11 years old at the time - I ended up writing a letter to Capcom explaining the game, what was different, and where this place was. After all, I can't support anything ILLEGAL!!! I wasn't the most informed child in the world. You can imagine how cool I was. I never heard back from Capcom, and I imagine they didn't care much about which places actually took the hack as much as who created it and was distributing it. Now I wonder why they would even care at all, as it just increased exposure of the game. Kind of like how I wonder about all this digital distribution stuff and ROMs now, why would these companies ever care... but as a kid, I just knew "illegal" = "go to jail". I liked the run, lots of crazy stuff. I have one question for error1 - you mentioned that the original SF2 had a Guile handcuff glitch that was corrected in CE. I always thought this was just a myth, but you're saying it actually existed in the original version?

Definitely a threat. In fact, suggestions on an internet forum turn out to be threats about 80% of the time. To add to this evidence, Fabian once swam across the Atlantic and punched me right in the face because I said that Jenna Fischer was meh.

On the last turn (coming off the ice), you hit the barrier on the first three laps, and not on the last two. Why the difference? Hitting the barrier seems to keep your speed under 478 for longer.

Well, I didn't win the contest (or even place for a runner-up book prize - frown). You can see the winners here if you're interested. However, I'll still be matching donations made from 4/18. Adelikat told me yesterday that this total was $45, so that means TASVideos will get $90 from this effort. Thanks everyone!

In this game you can play as one of many classic NES characters through the world of Super Mario Bros. 1. The game is really well done imo. Super Mario Crossover

Thanks for spreading this around! I appreciate it. I do like the beat a lot too, though I didn't compose it - it's taken from the song/video I parodied it from (see youtube description for details). Good luck with buckets! It takes a bit of discipline but gives a lot of peace of mind in return.

I think this is a bad idea, and I'd prefer not to go that route. Plus it seems lame to intentionally try to be a meme. That's something that supposed to happen accidentally - I'm pretty sure that's in the constitution or Bible somewhere. I just checked out the integer rap. That beat is FIYAH son!!

Makes me utterly regret not having any money to donate. Sorry.
You can still help by watching and sharing the video! :) Oh btw, if anyone wants to donate but anonymously, it will still count toward what I match. I plan on just asking adelikat for the total amount that was donated since this post once May gets here - even if you don't specifically post here and say that you want your donation to be part of the matching, as Canar did. Thanks!

I've entered a video contest over at GetRichSlowly, a finance blog that I've been reading for a while. The contest involves making a video about either a financial tip, or a financial success story. I took this opportunity to start to get over my apprehension about appearing on pictures and/or videos, especially online, and made a song and video to go with it. I feel pretty good about my finished video, but I'm doing badly in the "number of views" department, which is being taken into consideration during the judging process. I don't have a website/blog/etc. to ride on to get more views, so it's mostly just been friends that I've sent the link to who watch it. Why should anyone at TASvideos care about my stupid little video, you ask? Well, a winner is to be selected on May 1st by the author of the blog, and the winner receives $500 USD. I want to pledge a donation to TASvideos of $100 USD if I am chosen as the winner. I also will match any donations made between now and May 1st from other members (up to $100 USD), whether I win this contest or not. This means that we could raise up to $300 USD together for TASvideos in the next few weeks!
  • $100 in your donations;
  • $100 in matched donations;
  • $100 in contest winning donations.
So I need your help! I need you to check out the video below and share it with people who you think would be interested in it, whether it's actual interest, laughing at how I'm acting in this video, or just wondering what the hell I look like. Feel free to leave comments and all that usual youtube stuff as well. Here is my video! Please watch, share, and enjoy. Thanks everyone. Comments and criticism are welcome, as always. (Sorry if this seems like spam. I ran this by adelikat to make sure he was okay with what I was doing, and he ultimately allowed it because of the good it would do for TASvideos.) adelikat: and because helping promote JXQ's awesome dance skilz is highly worth it.

I enjoyed this quite a bit. One shot on board 38 seemed questionable to my untrained eye, though.

Two things come to mind. 1) What happens when someone later obsoletes one of these three? Do they have to do all three before submitting because the precedent was set here? 2) If the GB run was not accepted because it's similar to the NES version, I don't think those circumstances will change if this run is published and obsoletes the other NES runs. It's still the same amount of Tetris, just a different amount of separated movie files that contain this.

I watched the first 30 minutes or so. I quit because I found it extremely difficult to follow, since I'm not privy to all the tricks in this game. As such, I'm asking all sorts of questions that obviously have answers, such as:
  • Why was time spent stealing the fisherman's hat?
  • How did you get the golden scale as a kid?
  • Why was each bottle drop/regrab necessary?
  • Why did the game go into the six-pendant sequence when you had no pendants?
Subtitles would be a helpful way of educating the viewer as to why these actions were taken, and I think it would make the non-expert enjoy the run more. Similarly, subtitles (or commentary?) could be added to talk about spots that could be improved. I do think it's fascinating that so many different sequence breaks and strange glitches are used in this game. Usually something that really breaks the game ends up being used exclusively, but there's a decent amount of variety here. I just can't follow it. Fabian lol

This song was my attempt at changing up my voice for kicks. You'll notice that I'm [still] quite terrible with video quality! They Call Me Waluigi (Also, I didn't compose this beat.)

I always thought that subtitles were better fit for adding technical comments to a movie than audio. It's very tough to explain some of the complex concepts going on here when in reality they take 20 frames and are near-impossible to see at real-time speed. Subtitles let you do this a little more precisely than audio (especially when improvised). I envision a technical commentary working the best when the movie pauses, rewinds, splits into separate "threads", and so forth during both audio and subtitle commentary. Text and/or audio could point things out as needed during these pauses. You could show what would happen in different circumstances, or show some variables that are monitored (boss life) and/or manipulated (next drop item), or comparison with a different way that was ultimately slower (but people may wonder about!) super-imposed over the chosen route, or some goofy outtakes that couldn't be included because they were slower. It becomes its own presentation at that point.

Nice job. Lots of good stuff. The only thing I was didn't like, and maybe you tried it, was after the Star Light boss - you had an extra spiked ball, and you might have been able to spring onto the animal plunger with it. I remember I was able to do it a long time ago, but I then found a faster method for the boss that didn't allow it anymore. I liked in Star Light 2 when you had Sonic waiting at the sign. :) I don't think I should be listed as an author here. Shrug.
