If you want a different bitrate or higher quality, you need to re-encode the movies, not download the existing AVIs. If I misread this as your goal, I apologize.

Technical perfection is tough to judge if one doesn't know the game quite well. And there could always be techniques that are not yet discovered, which would mean the values are based on incomplete knowledge (although that's a bit of a stretch). To circumvent this, I have always judged that rating on how technically perfect the run looks. There is only one improvement I know of for this run that would change how things look. The rest are either visually minor, or completely undetectable without frame counters and/or memory watching.

Under a minute for sure. I'd be surprised if you could get more than six seconds.

JXQ Hi. In response to what you need for copyright infrigement, I am including the following information / questions. 1) (All that was necessary was my real name, which they e-mailed me asking for. Whatever name you give them will be plastered up on the page of the movie you are trying to remove, so give a fake name if you are wary of that.) 2) http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=447 http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=536 3) (direct youtube links to videos) 4) My e-mail is: (e-mail removed) The complaining party: (url of this person's youtube account) Since you are youtube, I think you have the information necessary to contact this individual. 5) I believe that this person's use of the material specified above is not authorized by the copyright owner, it's agent, or the law. 6) I assert that the information in this notification is accurate. Hope this helps, The YouTube Team ---- This person's entire account got suspended, which was more than I expected to happen, but I think it's fair. I've seen others post our content on youtube, but with all the same information clearly stated in the description, and authors not taking credit for the video. That I have no problem with. Anyway, I posted this in case someone else finds videos being misrepresented and they are wondering the procedure to do something about it.

Is there a url that would show the top 10, 20, 50, whatever number of movies by rating? I think that would be a helpful link to add to the front page.

HiddenGamer, what's the point of discouraging discussion? And why aren't you interested in someone's opinion on the topic you created that directly pertains to it? Because it is not someone doing work for you? Inzult's advice is very good; I suggest you do the same - actively pursue this goal by learning and experimenting. If nothing else, you could benefit by toning down the "cater to me" attitude, whether it's your intent or not.

An alley is of width X. Two ladders are standing in the alley so that one end is in the corner of the alley, and the other in on the opposite wall. They are situated so they form an X within the alley. One ladder is leaning onto the left wall so it hits the wall 40 metres from the ground. The other one hits the opposing wall 30 metres from the ground. The point where the ladders intersect is 10 metres from the ground. Determine the width of the alley.
Maybe I'm reading this wrong.

 A B
 |\ /|
 | \ / |
 | \ C / |
3| \ / |4
 | X |
0| / \ |0
 | / | \ |
 | / | \ |
 |/ | \|
D|____F____|E
      x
The ladders aren't the same length but just for the picture, this is what I'm deriving from the words. So I'm dropping a perpendicular from C down to line DE, and call that point of intersection F. The question is asking to find the length of DE, which I have labeled x (edit: not to be confused with big X, which is just a pretty way of showing intersecting ladders). By similar triangles, Length(DF) = x/3 and Length(EF) = x/4. But Length(DF) + Length(EF) = x. Substituting, I get that x/3 + x/4 = x. 7x/12 = x. x = 0. Broo? What am I doing wrong?

Isn't the metal cap entrance inside one of the levels? Maybe that would combine well.

Well I can't exactly tell where the differences are just by watching, but your persistence is admirable. And I definitely wish you good luck on Labyrinth 3. What a fun night that was! Jumping ahead: I may have already mentioned this, but for Star Light 3, depending on how many frames you beat me by, it may be faster overall to wait and end at 45 seconds (due to a shorter bonus). I remember this because I had 45 at first, then went back and improved it enough to barely get 44, and I actually started the next level later. And go for 16 seconds on Star Light 2! :)

I can't tell you a damn thing about what happened in this movie. But man, this is the most wicked bassline I've ever heard from the NES music format. Down with famtasia!

I tested YI2 with hop glitch and this trick and it didn't affect the ending frame. This "corner boosting" doesn't seem the same as the water corner boost to me. It looks as if you are being boosted up onto the platform, not to the right.

So I went to clean up my FCM (by removing the savestate that is automatically put there even on a reset-based movie, but supposed to be ignored) and it desyncs. Sigh. I figure this is a good excuse to start over and put in a couple improvements I know now, and also to make sure it's from a brand new absolutely clean wiped SRAM. This particular game must use battery back-up data in a different way than most. Either that, or I haven't dealt with any battery back-up games yet for NES. I also have a lot of other things I need to attend to, so I'm putting this project on hold. However, it's still my first TAS priority. Hopefully I can get back to this soon.

They both used to, along with SDW-120. Many people feel different ways about more than one star to a game. Anyway, star discussion takes place here: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2186 (only putting the link because the discussion in each individual thread inevitably gets moved there)

Cross-posted from IRC: [16:32:52] <JXQ> I think any longer movie that works well when split into segments and that has "extras" potential would work good on a DVD Good examples: Super Mario 64 (probably not 16-star though) Super Mario/Demo World Zelda, Link to the Past Zelda, Ocarina of Time Final Fantasy 6 Earthbound Chrono Trigger (RPGs would greatly benefit from director's commentary / explanation of strategies) I'm sure there are many other candidates. However, personally, I think putting even more work on the encoders is not a good idea. They already do so much. (I know, I gave encoding a decent try and got my ass handed to me)

The other request I find really irksome is asking Guano to pick up more hearts to get rid of the "low health" beeping sound.
There was one place where Guano had 1/4 of a heart and ended up getting it filled at the fairy where he learns the sword spin. I didn't see any hearts on the way, but I wondered why so many hits were taken on the electric boss in Jabu Jabu. You could also say it is another reason this game was prematurely run, because a feature that really should have existed in the emulator (recording soft resets) was not present.
mwl wrote:
unneeded hearts would only be picked up when doing so doesn't waste ANY time--and by that, I mean zero frames wasted.
Many authors, for a long run such as this, will sacrifice frames here or there to improve the entertainment of the run. So this may not be correct, depending on the author of the run.

I've been lucky enough to watch this run as it progressed. I must say that as far as platforming goes, TASing doesn't get much more entertaining than this. (And as far as TASing goes, platformers are WHERE IT'S AT) My 10 favorite levels: Donut Plains 3 Vanilla Dome 2 (secret) Vanilla Dome 3 Awesome Donut Plains 2 Donut Plains 2 (secret) Butter Bridge 2 Forest Fortress Chocolate Island 2 (secret) Chocolate Island 4 Mario almost looks bored as he effortlessly hops on and flies between hoards of enemies, grabbing and throwing shells every which-way, and taking inexplicable shortcuts through walls and floors. Fabian can create haphazard circumstances in this game like I've never imagined. With the exception of a few water levels, this run is pretty much non-stop craziness. Without a doubt, one of my favorite runs to date.

The interview was for a software developer position, which normally wouldn't give a test like this, but this was a very different place. In addition to the riddle test, I had a 2 minute "warm-up" test that just had 10 different questions you might find on a typical IQ test (such as "continue the pattern" or "which does not belong" questions), and also a test on an artificial programming language that they would teach to you one step at a time, then ask a question about.

When did "hex-edit" become a buzz-word around here that means "magically fix"? It seems to be catching on, but I invite anyone who thinks that way to give it a shot, or at least read the hex-editing page. (I don't mean to pick on you, nfq. There was another instance in IRC today, as well.)
