There was a chart of item probabilities posted somewhere, but I couldn't find it here, or here, or here. How many topics will this game get before it's done? Do I hear four?

I see now. What I wonder is how you got into the Brinstar gate room with 5 missles... (appropriate boggled text face). I'll add in that mockball, I also changed another strategy at the end of this progress that has gained 27 frames, which I'll post when I hit 20%.

Awesome, I was sad when this run got abandoned. Sequence breaking in this game is off the scale.

If you use a perfect mockball to roll through the small shaft right before the green door which leads to the Spazer you will be exactly 1 frame faster than using the normal method you and Michael used.
I must not be doing it correctly there, because that second block you have to shoot after the bomb goes off throws off normal mockballing strategies. I'll go back and test this some more, though, thanks!

In the second room? On the way to Ridley, I jump because I have to land (which resets speed) and I have to wait for the door to open (by resetting my speed). I killed both birds with my stone of doom. On the way back, I timed the hit by the steam to land in a position where the door already started opening, so I just ran up through the door. Jumping here wouldn't have helped because I didn't already have speed behind me (after landing). If this isn't the room you meant, please specify. Actually, could I ask for frame counts on questions from now on from everyone? It would make question-asking much easier for me. Thanks!

Answers: Hex-edit worked..ish, but affected randomness in the Torizo battle badly enough that it wasn't worth it. Using mockball when waiting for the bomb to blast when bombing the first wall - the one in Crateria? - is not faster, because it's such a short distance to travel in ball form and because there isn't much time to get speed for the mockball. I don't think those enemies in the next room caused lag, but I did do that room 2 frames faster than MF, so perhaps they did. I just thought it was cool to shoot them all. To shoulder pump under those gates at the beginning of Brinstar, you have to start shoulder pumping on a certain frame, otherwise the gates stop you or slow you down (the third gate will slow you down regardless). That's why I wait a few frames before starting it. The room before spazer...which room do you mean? I tried mockball in the first room after the vertical drop room, and it was slower, and in the room with the green door to Spazer, it's slower because you have to open the door and you can't do that in ball form. And whether you think you deserve it or not, you're getting thanks. :)

To anyone who isn't aware, I'm doing this project myself, since Michael has abandoned it. Currently I have 10% item collection (just past the Spazer) and I'm 4 seconds ahead of his run. The most noticeable change is a different strategy in the Torizo fight, which ended up being about 35 frames faster. Otherwise I'm just gaining a few frames in each room from more precise playing and a few minor techniques that weren't implemented before. I also have one more Super Missle. Here's my progress, for anyone interested. Big thanks go out to Graveworm, who has helped me learn this game very well. I'll try to post my progress every 10% or so.

Much improved. I liked how you seemed to have a different "theme" for your style of play on each level, that kept things interesting. Things that could further improve this run:
  • Using options
  • Using double gun (back and forth with laser)
  • Using not as many shields
  • Moving through walls in the blue level
  • Shooting the walls to create some kind of pattern
Even so, I enjoyed watching it, so I'm voting yes. You have quite a bit of determination, Diman!

I wondered why in the second level, you use blizzard to freeze the lava, but later in the level, you jump into a large lava pit, get hit, and jump out of it, which seems faster than the freezing/unfreezing effect of the blizzard spell. Sorry to bring back this topic....I know you like short submission texts, but this game may have benefitted from a bit more explanation about a few of your strategies. :\

I think this is a great example of a game that is fun to watch tool-assisted because it's such a difference between a non-assisted run, and not because of glitches, rather, just extreme precision. I also had fun watching it at 200% speed because then all the momentum changes and smashing into walls looks even cooler, and also the music is higher pitched, making it more audible.

I don't remember the old movie too well, but I did notice how he didn't use his super speed to travel through walls in the blue level. I did like how Diman at least picked up a shield at the end. If this idea was carried further, I think this would be loads more fun to watch. You can only upgrade speed so many times - why not get some missles or a different gun to show off the game's arsenal?

I was afraid up+down would ruin this for me like it did the short run of the same game, but the levels that are put back in don't use it much at all. And the sand-digging looked good to me.

I haven't watched this run, and I've never played the game, but part of me was surprised this was published so quickly, because there are some runs in the queue that are much more accepted, going by the vote counts and the comments left on this thread, and also because this is a long run (meaning it would take awhile to encode). On the other hand, part of me wasn't surprised, because Bisqwit had shown a lot of interest in this run while it was being made. While I don't think that's the greatest reason in the world, it's not my site.

If you shouldn't vote yes on your own runs, then the option shouldn't be there.

Either way, it's not too far from the end of the game, so maybe replaying the last couple worlds would still be feasible if hex-editing fails.

I had a question about this run; you mentioned in the thread for the game when you were working on it about a scoring bug that subtracted points for some move if one of your digits was a 9 (I think). Did you end up including this in the run somewhere?

I request a little progress report. :>
My progress is the same as it has been. I haven't restarted back up on this run yet, but I should very soon. I'm not sure about WIPs, but I'm leaning toward not releasing any. I feel like it would put extra demand on me to finish the movie (even if it's just me thinking that) and it could affect quality tradeoff for how quick I can complete this project. Saturn, your name rearranged is TAS-run. And so it is written :)

Haha watching the enemies bungee jump into the pits was nice. I never played this game, but it looked well done to me. Sucks that the music completely cuts out everytime someone dies, though.

How come all the SMB3 runs use firepower in Bowser's air ship instead of the washbear? Is it just to make it more challenging/interesting, or is it actually faster, other than for killing the boss?
For fighting Boom-Boom, firepower is the faster of the two methods (but still is slower than using a star or hammer suit). For fighting Koopa kids, firepower kills them faster, but raccoon (washbear) power can be used on some levels to fly to the top and grab the wand above the screen, which is almost equally as fast as using firepower. For regular levels, running is the same speed regardless of what powerup Mario has, but if he is raccoon Mario, once he jumps at full speed, he will enter flying mode, and the speed will start slowing if he stays in the air. His P-Meter also stays maxed for a few seconds, and then empties completely, making it necessary to run up to full speed again. (For autoscrolling levels, this doesn't matter that much)

The movie was well played, I agree with your statement of the game being so fast that it can't be controlled normally (reminds me of Legacy of the Wizard at times). The game is also really colorful. I vote yes. But holy crap the sound is AWFUL.

Why skip so many crush items, do they just waste time or something?
Yeah, they seem to delay new enemies entering for almost a second. I also figured that it would generally be more impressive / entertaining to watch a crowded room be tackled without it, because getting a crush is the easy thing to do.
