Zephyr and Gergoth Mostly just running around. Some souls skipped for later, since they're either faster or avoid soul travel. Medusa for example can be aquired during a red door transition to the WakWak tree.

Suddenly 5Mk rerecords? You used a bot for some manipulation?
I've started using hexing to manipulate souls, and during this I noticed that you can change the rerecord count. Thought I'd have some fun, it was 89063 before I changed it.

Damn, this keeps looking more sick with each addition. What's the current % (and total) of souls collected?
Thank you, it's 53/116, or 46%.

Another 2 minute update. Woo. I redid Puppet Master and saved roughly 2 seconds. It's also a little more entertaining than before. GergothPie The filesize is starting to become a little big, I wonder if this can be fixed by just hexing the input into a fresh .dsm, I'll check that later.

Wow, so many encodes, thank you guys. I've been stuck for a long time, but managed to break free yesterday, I had to skip Bone Pillar soul for it all to work out. There is one more opportunity to get it later on, on the way to Subterranean Hell. I maxed out Lilith, which was really nice, and I also finished Puppet Master. Extremely entertaining fight. Oh yes. Maybe changing to Lilith/Axe Armor might make it faster, I'll have to check that. Pie

Too bad Slaughterer souls don't stack. Why do you need so many Liliths, btw?
They increase spell damage by a ridiculous amount. Slaughterer went up from 80 to 100 with 8 intelligence alone. I figured I'd need spell damage on Rahab and Aguni, since they both have very small time windows for actually hitting them. I'm pretty sure I'll be using Disc Armor through the later half of the game, since it does ridiculous amount of damage, which will be amplified greatly with Lilith. Hopefully I can max it out, haven't really check that thoroughly how many Lilith's there are en route.

Hello! 2 minute update: Pie The Lilith's are taking forever to manipulate, so I'm taking a short break. Even though it's a fairly long WIP, there's not much going on really. Although I suppose I should mention that redoing Malphas saved a full second, which is good stuff.

In AoS you could also trade souls between games on different cartridges, I think, so presumably that might also be a reason for the second drop rate in addition to the Headhunter soul.
Ah that makes some sense, however pointless addition to the game that may be. Anyways, I remade the Valkyrie and pretty much eliminated any and all delay for the soul, I manipulated her to swoop lower, which caused the soul to arc up instead of down. I also finished Dimitrii and Malphas, though I do fear that I want to redo Malphas to pick up some more hearts to make more Slaughterer hits. Also I kind of want the soul to arc right instead of left, which would save 3-5 frames. I was surpised she died before she did anything though, was expecting some heavy manipulation to be necessarry for her to make her bat attack all the time. Kriole: so you're saying that there's two drop rates, one for getting the first soul, and one for getting souls after that? And that the first-soul rate is lower?
Yes, the same was also true for AoS. It makes some sense in DoS, since multiple souls of the same kind are often more effective, but very little in AoS... I assume it's for the headhunter soul or something.

Wouldn't it be faster to upgrade the axe armor soul more in the beginning in order to make it stronger? Or wasn't it faster?
Upgrading souls is sadly very underwhelming, it only adds 3 damage, which is assuming I get a soul on every encounter (5 souls for level 2). So it probably is an improvement, but I don't think outside of Balore. Although I'm curious if upgrading it has an impact on the hitbox, since visually the axe becomes much larger.

Random question -- are the souls in DoS on average more rare than the ones in AoS? I always had that impression but as far as I can tell there's no numbers published for AoS so I can't do a direct comparison.
Well it says that in DoS the soul drop ranges from everything to 1 to like 24% chance per soul, depending on rarity (it also suggests that items have around 4-8% drop chance which is most likely complete bullshit, killing 250~ malacodas to find one kotetsu, the new 6%). I'm assuming these numbers are AFTER the initial soul - souls of any given kind are more common if you have it already. From that I'd hazard a guess that the drop chance is a little lower in Dawn of Sorrow, but to compensate, manipulating is much much much much much easier, so yay. Edit: Huge thanks for the encode by the way, I've been talking to rhebus and apparently he can't really watch the WIPs since his computer isn't good enough, and I'm sure there are other people who have the same issue. So again, thank you very much! :D

A full minute done since the last WIP - everything up to Dimitrii. The Mandragora looks kinda of slow, but that's not because I'm trying to manipulate, it's because I'm waiting for the axe to connect. If I had moved any earlier the axe would've disappeared. I'm fairly content with that trio of souls, I had a few ideas in mind and this one was the fastest one as it turned out, which is really nice. I'm not sure if I should pick up Valkyrie where I do, while it is pretty damn rare there might be other places where there is less delay. I'll have to check that. Pie

After some hexediting, I managed to add a potion to the Blunt Sword pause screen, this allows me to take damage from the Catoblepas' instead of killing them, a huge timesaver no doubt, since there are more places to take damage up ahead.

I've made quite a lot of progress, but I can't say I'm happy with it. I had to skip The Creature cause I couldn't even find the soul after like 3 hours of work. Luckily there's another encounter on the way to Subterranean Hell. Also, it should be possible to skip any of the Catoblepas, probably kill both but get the soul from the 2nd one. The issue is that I had to use both to manipulate the Skeleton Farmer. I'll try more tomorrow, but I'm done for the day. Pie

I haven't tampered with any of the settings, and all other DoS videos on the site sync with my rom, so I don't know what might be the problem. Where exactly does it desync? I've noticed wrong version of the emulator pretty much always desync at the first Armor Knight.

I've made a little progress today, mainly Balore and the 2 Golem souls. There was nothing I could do about the Manticore it seems, I wanted to pick it up the same way as the Bomber Armor soul... but the soul never arced the way I wanted it to, which I guess is due to the Manticore's big hitbox. Somewhat of a shame, but I still improved it by 5 frames, making it look a look more acceptable. Pie <3

I'm done with the planning and it was much easier than I thought (although still took me pretty much an entire day), since there's is virtually no clean-up. Unfortunately there are 2 souls which are really out of the way, Yeti and Wakwak tree... I'm thinking of saving them for very last so I can use Black Panther. This may or may not be faster, especially considering the Wakwak tree - there is no doubt in my mind that Yeti is faster with Black Panther, since you have to warp to it anyways. The Wakwak tree however can be gotten on the way to the Pinnacle, with a fairly large detour. I'm going to have to test this after I'm done with Zephyr. But everything else has been accounted for and I can carry on as I used to. Sadly there are no Manticores on my route, but I believe it's possible to collect the soul very early by taking damage. No pie today =(.

Low% speedbooster, even more so than the ice beam route, is just an any% with extremely long and boring bossfights. I'm fairly certain most people agree with me, if it hasn't been mentioned in the thread already.

Hoping it to be close to AoS in terms of goodness by the end.
Hopefully it will be, atleast the bossfights in DoS are more entertaining, thanks to the Katanas... Unfortunately I think I'm going to have to take a small break from actually working on the run to planning a route. The Manticore I'm fighting currently has a huge delay arc on his soul, so I need to see if there are any other Manticores en route which have a smaller soul arc. I noticed that this game really really lacks weapons. I know there's a Kotetsu in the Dark Chapel which you can reach by jumping on the Imps but it's still only a tier 3 weapon... feels like I'm going to have to rely a lot on spells, or Devil soul most likely. I redid Flying Armor which took longer than I thought it would... I needed him to swing either left, stay in place, or swing down, and this is apparently determined when you enter the room, so I had to redo until I got a favorable RNG. Also, I had him swing much lower, which allowed me to throw the last axe earlier. Also, I noticed that it's possible, much like in Aria of Sorrow, to move for 1 frame after a soul screen message. I used this to glide, backdashing caused a lot more lag than the glide, and glide reaches a teensy tiny bit farther. I was surprised how smooth the Ouija Table went, it took me seriously like 300 revisits when I played it unassisted, so I was a little worried. But well, it wasn't too bad after all. Not sure if I should switch back to Armor Knight directly after using the Flying Armor... it's probably faster, so I should look to redo that, unless I should just wait out for a better guardian soul and save myself a pause screen. Aff, did a pretty big mistake on the Warg's, apparently you can take damage much earlier and still be propelled to the right, gonna redo from there =/. Edit: And I also found out that glitched level-up/soul screens works in this aswell. Cool stuff. 101 frames saved at the Flying Armor door, really nice.

And before I forget (I just remembered) in case you did not notice: The pause menu responds to taps on the touch screen, you may want to test various taps as well as pad-navigation for each pause menu entry to see if the fastest method for navigation changes depending on the current state of the game.
I actually did think of this while doing the pause screen, luckily. It saved 1 frame for each item/soul equipped, which is really neat-o.

Thank you, I'll try. Even though this game is fairly similar to Aria of Sorrow, I still feel like an amateur when TASing it. I'll keep the WIPs short so hopefully people can point out mistakes more often, heh. I just finished Flying Armor, and I'm about to find out how to do Magic Seals, so I figured it might be a good idea to WIP. Flying Pie

I might have bothered with the Hellfire soul if it was needed for any sort of completion, but it isn't. You don't need it for 100% souls, nor for Chaos Ring. You don't even collect it, it's given to you. I've been trying to establish a feeling for the game and how luck manipulation works, luckily it works pretty much identical to Aria of Sorrow (even the enemies change RNG at the same rate they did in the original). I also noted something interesting during the movement pattern - if you attack or cast a bullet soul after a duck, the animation only lasts for 1 frame, so you don't have to cancel your autoattack with a backdash. This is awesome for saving frames. Also, during the golem fight in the opening, you can cancel a normal attack into a special attack, so the special attack connects twice. Pretty cool. Pie I'm using Desmume 9.8, hence the name. Hopefully it syncs, I've noticed that the modern emulators have a bad habit of desyncing alot for people.

How do you plan on getting the NG+ souls since NG+ does not reset the soul collection? 2 completions of the game?
The Hellfire soul doesn't actually count towards the 100% soul collection, dunno if I should bother with that =/. Also, the movement pattern stuff solved itself... I was just doing it wrong, derp.

Hello! I've started planning for a 100% run for this, just trying to edge out my fundamentals. First of all, I don't get the new movement pattern at all. Are you supposed to do it as fast as possible or what, cause that turned out to be slower than the old one.

Speedbooster for Kraid is about 4 seconds faster (probably a little more?) Every Pipebug refill after the first one is roughly a 100 frame delay, not counting the actual time it takes to get to the pipebugs.
