Couldn't tell, but I take it that saves time because you skip the fade in sequence?
It doesn't save time sadly, because the 120 uses MIPS #1 to clip through the HMC door. However, this will save a few frames when fully optimized: http://www.twitch.tv/ky_man/c/2580749 (Sorry for bad quality)

Is there some secret sub 5 TAS in the making, that noone is allowed to know about until it is submitted, so you can blow all our heads completely away?
No one is working on anything but we will sub 5...one day... (I bet this game has some sort memory corruption that no one knows about because no one has thoroughly searched AFAIK)

Would you still have to activate the cannon in a 120 star run for "Somewhere over the Rainbow"? If so, it might unfortunately be slower to use this.
sonicpacker mentioned in the submission thread for the new 120-star that they could have skipped the cannon, but it would have been slower. So the question then is whether or not the time saved with this strat would make up for not using the cannon for Somewhere Over The Rainbow.
Opening the cannon would probably be done here.

Hey guys! I've got some good news and some bad news. Good news: Link to video 3 frames saved. Read the description for more information. Bad news: We probably will not be finished by the end of the month. Now with this improvement we need to manipulate Bowser's dance, plus we still have other sections to complete, and we are all busy with exams/other life stuff. We will continue to work hard on this run though!

My vote is for the "All Souls" Castlevania run. This TAS has not only unbelievable manipulation, it is highly optimized too...but I believe a lot of the entertainment factor comes from the manipulation. That is why it gets my vote for Lucky TAS of 2012.

My vote is for the Link's Awakening Playaround. The run is extremely entertaining, and breaks the game completely. This run is for everyone, as someone unfamiliar with the game is still easily able to identify the glitching that is going on, yet there are a lot of treats in the run for people who know the game well. The other movies are all great too, but I believe this is the GB(C) TAS of 2012.

My vote is for the 120 star. Even though I am one of the many authors, I believe this run was the best 3D TAS of 2012. The years of effort that went into it, how fast paced it is, and the fact that it even got finished are my main reasons for this vote.

Snark posted a really slick wall jump in BitS! :D Was that an improvement you guys found, or does this mean an even faster time?
Unfortunately, unless it lets us get another elevator cycle early for the ending BLJ, it won't save time.

Just making this post to confirm that there is a new 0 star TAS in the works. We have found an improvement, so our time will be less than 5:01.95 (snark & ToT's TAS).
