Nice run, I only have one question: what was the thing with the carpet all about? Just before the first cave level ends you walk back and forth on the carpet a few times. I always thought the level ended when you reached the edge of the level. Is this not true? Is there some sort of a timer that ends level or do you have to wait for Abu or what?

I'm not sure if this is the part you are referring to, but at least once macK does something like this to prevent Jerry from taking damage from a high fall. If Jerry jumps down from a platform that's too high, he goes into a "stunned" animation for a while and loses one heart.

Theenglishman: The game doesn't lag, the spider webs just slow you down. This was one of my favorite games when I was a kid and I actually started to make a TAS of this in the Famtasia era. I can see you've put some thought into using the bubble gum, which is nice. However, I think your movements are not very well optimized. It's hard to explain but some parts just look pretty sloppy to me. I think this can be improved, therefore voting no.

I don't remember it like that. I distinctively remember that getting hit was not a common practice back when the site was young. It was only popularized later (but still earlyon) by Bisqwit.

I know that's how it is. It still doesn't mean I like it.

I think taking damage just looks ugly. I don't care if the runner saves a second by running straight at an enemy, I can't see that from the run. If he however kills the enemy or dodges it in a very fast way it does look impressive. Running at an enemy is easy and I can do that in normal play. I don't care about the number of frames it takes the runner to get from beginning to end, I care about how it looks. Taking damage just always looks sloppy to me, even if I know it's faster than killing or dodging the enemy. It's another thing if taking damage results in a clever shortcut like in the aformentioned Castlevania games. I'm very sad that taking damage became the preferred way of doing things in TASes. Personally I like Morimoto's movie more than any of these glitched movies (well, it was pretty cool when we saw the zipping glitches for the first time).

Don't forget that the tools have also been improved greatly. It's not really fair to compare a movie done with 20fps Famtasia and a movie done with the current FCEU using frame advance and memory watcher.

I've watched like two so far and really I'm not laughing. He keeps whining how there are secrets and tricks in McKids that little kids could never figure out even though they're not all that hard. Besides, that's the fun in the game: you have to play through it many times to fully know it. My point: It'd be funny if the points he raises about the games were actually valid and smart, but he fails miserably by whining and bitching about stuff that's actually not so bad.

I couldn't come up with ten so here's the top 4 in order of awesomeness: 1. spezzafer 2. nitsuja 3. Genisto 4. JXQ Note: The list is of course based only on TASes the players have produced, not on the people themselves.

Yep, liked it. It was short enough to not become boring and repetitive.

The question is: is it pointless for him to play with himself? </bomf>

Thank god I don't have to live in a dorm. It's nice to live in a country where the government pays the students' rent.

How can people see the small mistakes he made as proof of the video being real? As someone already said, if someone was to send a TAS to SDA, he would most probably leave in mistakes to make it beliaveable. No one would be stupid enough to just send in a run with absolutely no mistakes. Same goes for the arm pumping.

Haven't watched the WIPs but I'm pretty sure you can't make an entertaining run of this game. Hopefully you can prove me wrong.

Well put Twelvepack. Maybe the name on the front page should just be changed to "Movies of hacked games/other movies". I agree that the term "concept demo" is pretty intolerable, since no definition of it can be found anywhere. EDIT: And why was this thread created when there's an existing one? Or did you spend 1,5 hours writing this and didn't notice?

Be sure to use the right patch. Headerless patch for a headerless rom and a headered patch for a headered rom. I believe you can add or remove a header with NSRT. (Seems to be down at the moment? I'm sure you can get it from somewhere else as well).

I don't want to see a run of the GBA version, I have never played it. I don't know about FF5, but at least the GBA FF4 was not a direct port, things had been changed.

I haven't seen the video but from all what I've read I say this should be published alongside Pom's video. The video does try to complete the game as fast as possible, unlike the walkathon. The game version is just different. Of course I wouldn't recommend publishing movies of all FDS games alongside the NES ones, but this game is just so popular and well-known that many people would probably be very insterested in this seeing video. I think it's a strong enough reason to grant this an exception. So that's a NO for this going to concept demos.

Yep, it's hard. I tried this game earlier but I just can't even begin to try to compare with spezzafer. He's my all-time most respected runner for this alone.

I'm having a hard time believing completely that it was not a TAS. Does anyone know what methods the people at SDA used to determine it's not a TAS?

I have to say if it was up to me, this run would already be up on the site. This has got to be the most entertaining Super Metroid run ever (and hence one of the most entertaining and awesome runs I've ever seen). The incredible shinesparking, screw attacking and starting a spin jump again after first shooting in the air etc. just took my breath away. If there were any small errors, they were the kind that I didn't notice. The sheer speed is awesome! I'm glad you did this, Drew. Thank you.

I think in general the publication favor of the 3 M's needs to be removed, at least reduced a little to give other games a chance.
I don't think it's reasonable to say that other games don't have a chance. It's not like M-runs are completely flooding the queue or anything. It doesn't hurt anyone if they are published fast. If a run really is good it will be published sooner or later. I don't think constantly reminding people about the number of yes-votes or setting your own movie up for getting a star when the run has only been on the workbench for a few days is helping your cause. No offence intended in any way. Oh, and I love the run. Congrats on finally finishing it.

In Finnish 'to come' has a double meaning such as you decribed, xebra, but I think that it's been adopted from some other language (most probably English). "Tulla" (to come) is not used very much as there is a better verb with which to describe having an orgasm, "laueta" (to go off, like a gun or a bomb).
