I think I've already mentioned this in another topic, but if frame advance is added to an N64 emulator, you'd be able to make TASs for Mario Kart 64 since you can just do a replay when you finish a race in time trials, so re-recording isn't needed. Would someone be willing to add frame advance to one of the N64 emulators? I don't know too much about adding features to emulators, but it doesn't seem like it would be too much trouble.

I just noticed that Flagitious' A Link to the Past movie doesn't have a star. Is there any reason for this? It got 55 yes votes and the game is very popular.

What character should i use? It seems like alot of records i have seen uses Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong Jr. or Bowser. Should i pull off the drive backwards stunt even if i still lose a few seconds or not? If it loses time, then no. Make speed your primary goal. And try to find shortcuts with feather. Yes. Take the quickest turns even if it means going in the dirt. Yes, do whatever is fastest. I'd recommend watching some of these vids for tips: http://timeofdeath.net/wrvideos.html And, Isn't there a way to get a good head start moving fast if u hold the button at the correct timing? Yes. If I remember correctly, you start pressing B between the first and second light.

Something I'd also like to see done, as a novelty, is a cup completion with an 8th place ranking. I remember seeing a vid of that awhile ago. I thought I had it in my smkvideos folder but I can't find it now. If you ask about it on the SMK forum, maybe someone will have it and can send it to you. Edit: Never mind, I just found it, so I'll upload it when I get a chance.

One of the reasons that a TAS hasn't been done for this game is because even though it is a good game it wouldn't be that interesting to watch. I disagree. If someone made a good TAS for this game it would be one of the best movies on the site. I think the main reason no one has done it is, as others have said, because it's so hard to optimize. Also, I think it would be worth having a TAS for both time trials and Mario GP. Michael should definitely do this TAS ^_^ Since he is a great player of this game, I don't think he would rerecord his run that much. Go M.Fried! I'm ok at this game, maybe average skill, but not nearly as good as I am at MK64. The Mario Circuit 1 world record is 57.88 and I think my Mario Circuit 1 time, which is probably my best time, is about 1:02, so that's not so great. Making a good TAS for this game would require a lot of knowledge about the game physics, which I definitely don't have. Awhile ago I tried save stating before every turn in Mario Circuit 1 and slowed the game down a little, and all I could manage was about 1:00.5, so I'm clearly not the person who should be making a TAS for this game.

Would anyone like it if i tried to make a site/forum (just like this one) for speed runs? What's wrong with the SDA forum?

Can't we all play simultanously in some website? Yes, here's the time trials competition site: http://mariokart64.com/ You can get the fastest vids available here: (though there are also some slightly faster vids that Radix didn't accept because of the poor video quality) http://speeddemosarchive.com/MarioKart64.html I also have over 2 GB of MK64 vids in my get file (mjf345) including many vids by me, so if you want to get them, IM me and I'll add you to my buddy list.

I would sooo own all of you in mario cart N64 ^_^ *chooses Wario and zooooooooom* Mario Kart is with a K, not a C, I'll have to kart-ban you. :P Anyway, I'll accept your challenge. Here are my time trials times, let's see how many you can beat: http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~shadow/profiles/michaelfried.html

Notice that I said "you can also make a choice for a newer system like N64 or GC in addition," not "instead of." Which NES/SNES/GB/Genesis game would you most like to see a perfect TAS for?

What game would you choose? (it has to be for a system that has a re-recording emulator) Once you choose the game, the emulator movie file just magically appears in the submissions, and you know for sure that it'll be perfect in every possible way. There's no possible way to make it any faster, all possible glitches have been taken advantage of, all luck has been manipulated perfectly, and nothing has been overlooked. Either choose just one game or one for each system if you want (though still specify which you'd be most interested in). If you want to, you can also make a choice for a newer system like N64 or GC in addition.

Does jumping decrease your horizontal velocity in this game?

I don't see what Bisqwit's problem is with Donkey Kong movies, I think this should be published.

I agree with Deviance, what he said was correct and not misleading at all. If someone asks for the solution to a puzzle and someone is responding, it's assumed that he's talking about the solution. If I ask "how do you do that flying trick in SMW" and Flagitious says "it's necessary to press the button X number of frames after Y happens", nothing is wrong or misleading about what he said.

So the obvious solution is to call them "infinite-segment" runs. But there aren't really infinite segments, or even anything comparable to the number of re-records. Suppose there's a movie that's 1000 frames long, and you do 5 frames at a time, and you retry each 5 frame segment 100000000 times. It's still only 200 segments.

Heh, but if it takes you to World 1-2, then that wouldn't save you any time... unless you want to consider it part of an "all levels" run. :) So what if it doesn't save time? It would still be a really cool trick. I'll try it out soon and see if I can get it to work. Edit: I just tried it out and couldn't get it to work.

has anyone ever figured out if there's a way out of that water-world? There's no way out, it just keeps repeating, unless you're playing the fds version in which case there's a -2 and a -3 also. Edit: Hm, interesting, I was just looking at the SMB wikipedia article and it says there's a glitch that lets you escape (and no, this isn't that april fools hoax many of us have seen). Does anyone want to test this out?
In 2005, David Victor Gehrke discovered the only known exit to World -1 thus far. It involves running into both a Blooper enemy character and a red fish enemy character at the same time, near the pipe at the end of the level. If this is achieved, Mario will die and restart at the middle of World 1-2. This feat was witnessed by many, but has not yet been videorecorded.

Could Nintendo make the SNES game out of the NES game? Ever hear of Super Mario All-Stars?

and TAS is "difficult to pluralize" I didn't have any trouble pluralizing it when I made my topic called "Which classic games don't have TASs yet?"

Jonas' 55 minute warpless SMB3 movie is pretty bad, I can even beat a few of the level times in that movie without save states.

That depends on your definition of a classic. A game that's popular and stands the test of time.

I forgot about Genesis games. I don't have a Genesis and I don't know anything about what Genesis games are classic besides Sonic the Hedgehog, but here are 2 lists from gamefaqs so maybe some of these are good ideas for TASs: Top 10 FAQ Pages 01 Sonic the Hedgehog 3 02 Shining Force II 03 Sonic the Hedgehog 2 04 Sonic the Hedgehog 05 Shining Force 06 Sonic & Knuckles 07 Phantasy Star IV 08 Zero Wing 09 Streets of Rage III 10 Shadowrun Top 10 Message Boards 01 Sonic the Hedgehog 02 Shaq-Fu 03 Shining Force II 04 Urban Strike 05 Valis III 06 Zero Wing 07 Phantasy Star IV 08 Ooze, The 09 Arch Rivals 10 Shadowrun

edit: also, PAPERBOY! Is Paperboy just a game you want to see done, or is it a classic game? I just checked gamefaqs, and judging from the number of walkthroughs and the activity level of the message board, it doesn't seem like such a popular game. Anyway, a few more classic games would be Oracle of Ages/Seasons (though they're not quite as classic as LA), Super Mario Land 2 and 3, Metroid 2 for Gameboy (I'm not sure if this is popular or not, but it's a Metroid game so I guess it's at least somewhat popular), and Secret of Mana (I don't know anything about this game except that it's popular).

There are so many TASs already, but how many classic games are there that are greatly in need of a TAS and would be really cool for the site to have? It's getting hard to come up with more classic games, but a few that come to mind are Link's Awakening, Super Mario Kart, Chrono Trigger (never played it but I know it's very popular), and one of the Pokemon games (whichever one would make the coolest run, I wouldn't know since I haven't played them). Can anyone think of any more?

Are you actually trying to get the official policy of this site changed Actually that's a pretty good idea. Timeattack isn't defined yet in the glossary, and I'm an editor so if I wanted to I could put in wikipedia's definition and say that timeattack doesn't mean a save state run, but I'm too lazy to do that now and I'd rather play more Diddy's Dash, but I guess I'll try to type up a good definition sooner or later if no one else does.
