Usually it's best not to release R as you go over a zipper, and wait until you start tapping A to slide again.
Sorry, I just noticed I made a typo. That was supposed to say: Usually it's best to release R as you go over a zipper, and wait until you start tapping A to slide again. Edit: Btw have you tested out different characters? I always thought Banjo was faster than Bumper, though I might be mistaken because since I beat adventure mode I've never used anyone other than TT. For JF, at the beginning of the big jump, try to stay closer to the wall on the right. Also I noticed that for the zipper before that, you hit it too far to the left. I'm not sure if it's possible to stay tight in this part of the track without sliding, because I find the sliding strat to be easier so I never tried not sliding here, but if you're not able to stay tight then you might wanna make an exception for this one zipper and just hold the slide.

I have now done up to snowball valley. Here is the most current version. Same comments as before apply.
I just watched the first few tracks. The plane part at the beginning wasn't bad, but then when you switched to the car the driving quality was clearly much worse than the best non-TAS runs. I'd suggest watching all the vids on my site, and then start over from the beginning. Fastest available vids: http://www.wrvids.com/Diddy%20Kong%20Racing/Fastest%20Available%20Vids/ Some car vids by me, done on Mupen64 with autofire (non-TAS): http://www.wrvids.com/Diddy%20Kong%20Racing/Michael%20Fried-autofire(mupen64)/ Edit: Also, a few tips: While sliding, you can tap R to turn more sharply. You can prolong your boost by jumping into the air (check my JF vid for an example). Usually it's best not to release R as you go over a zipper, and wait until you start tapping A to slide again.

Fried took over in the air, curved left more than W or I could, hit the wall, and got the 37"18 finish.
Actually I took over on the ground. I just started pressing left earlier than you did.
Oh, dear. I hope Fried doesn't release his TAS findings publicly. I'm very much against time trial TAS'. They damage the real TT community.
I posted the 2 time trials TASs I did so far on youtube and on wrvids.
you can tell when Fried is driving because the input plugin changes from max of 99 to 62. (weatherton uses the same plugin as me.)
It has nothing to do with plugin. The one I uses lets me go up to 99, but I choose not to because based on the tests I did there's no difference between 62 and 99.

Spiky shell form the tunnel? Are you serious? how long have you been playing this game, and not know that the spiky shell is only available from the balloon? I know that was supposed to be a suggestive comment, but it comes out as unprofessional.
I've barely played GP at all. After I beat GP mode for the first time, the only time I ever played it was on rare occasions against my brother. I play mostly just time trials.

Michael, you keep on saying that it's unoptimized. Please tell us where. Don't pull an AKA on us.
Faster mini-turbos. More spacing between mini-turbos. Avoid hopping immediately after a mini-turbo. Take the turn into the tunnel more tightly. Edit: Btw is it possible to get a spiny shell from the item boxes in the tunnel? If so, then you should get a star or super mushroom from the first set of item boxes and use it to cut through the grass on the first turn. Edit: Also I'm pretty sure that using the mushroom for mylestyle isn't the best strat. Just do mylestyle without the mushroom, and then use the mushroom just before getting the spiny shell item box, and use it to cut through some of the grass, or even better, get a star instead of a mushroom.

Are you sure the sliding was frame perfect though? It looks kinda unoptimized in the tunnel. Also, is it not worth it to slide back and forth even when going straight?
It's nowhere near optimized. The world record video is much cleaner: http://wrvids.com/Mario%20Kart/MK64/Fastest%20Available%20Vids/lr-13824(pal)-Jongerius.wmv

t how to perfect MT (mini turbo) and I've just looked over at mariokart64.com and seen all the crazy cornering techniques.
If you're referring to the "Advanced Power Sliding Techniques", just so you know that was written by Tim Everett, who's only ranked 27th. So while some of it may be useful, there's more to know than just what's on that page, and his explanations are also over-simplified and over-generalized. You're probably best off just watching the vids, and then experimenting on your own, then after you do each part show it to me and/or post it on the Mario Kart forum to get input.

I'm going to try time trial with MK64. Breaking or matching the current WR's.
Do you have AIM? If so, give me your screen name so I can add you, and I'll tell you everything you need to know about MK64. If you wanna see vids, check out the fastest available vids at my site (though unfortunately I'm still missing some of MJ's vids): http://wrvids.com/Mario%20Kart/MK64/Fastest%20Available%20Vids/

Would it be possible to save time by doing the jumping trick at the beginning of Donut Plains 1 before you get the cape? I haven't tried it myself, but it looks like you could probably fit in 2 jumps there.

I know I can do it, but if noone can bother to help me, I can't bother to start a TAS.
First start out by reading the Using emulator tools page. Then just hang out in the IRC chatroom and whenever you need help with anything just ask. There are always lots of people in there so someone should be able to answer your questions.

i have a problem with the emu, i confused with the keys , maybe hit the wrong buttons , and now the rom always works like turbo, no manner to retrieve it working back correctly ps ; i havent started the run yet , maybe i can start when i have no problem with the rom i tried to open the rom (forced low rom )no results i tried to adjust the speed with the hotkeys after that problem but it has no more influence now (even if the change of the speed displays).. i think there is something in the memory of my pc that makes the emu boosts, fastest solution would be to format my pc and the emu will work correctly but maybe not , for example , i cant install msn messenger now ..so to format the pc cant solve everything i remember now yashar why i gave up since a few days , this is because of this problem i got with the emu :/ to format my pc will take long (the reinstall) and i wouldnt like to do it i d like to fix this problem with another manner , but i am not an informatician expert if i could fix it within the emu directly that would be nice
Click options, display configuration, and make sure automatic frame skipping is checked. If that doesn't work, then click options, settings and make sure toggle fast-forward mode is unchecked. If that doesn't work then I have no idea what the problem is. Anyway you could always just use frame advance when you make the TAS and it won't matter if the emulator runs too fast.

Suggested Screenshot, Cranky Kong in the credits. "I did this using one life." "And it took less than an hour!" That's funny for all sub-1 hour runs, it should be something unique about this run.

Check out the rules topic, I edited the rules to make it an official forum rule that Monopoly wars involving 3 Monopoly submissions per day are cool! Now no one is allowed to complain anymore! *waits 10 seconds* Um, just kidding, but we can still consider it an unofficial rule. :)

Isn't this supposed to be a topic about a monopoly movie? Why are you people arguing about how long submission texts should be? I'm too lazy and tired to figure out who started this, but if it goes on too much longer, then, um, I'll be asleep by then and I won't be able to threaten you with my mod powers, so make sure you all behave!

If anyone tries this, you should get someone in the top 5 to regularly watch the WIPs and give advice.
You think its possible to convince someone in the top 5 to make a TAS? Edit: Why are we forgetting Nitsuja? :) He's the one discovering those tricks as he's proven several times before he is a all-round player. No game is too big for him.
If you wanna try to talk one of them into it, make a topic about it here: http://www.mariokart64.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?board=SMK Edit: Btw keep in mind that if anyone plans on making a GP TAS, there are some other strategies and shortcuts besides what you'll see in the time trials videos.

Even with savestates and whatnot, it is still extremely difficult to get even close to the world record times. You'd need intimate knowledge of the game before even beginning to imagine how to work out a TAS.
Thats why I would love to see Mr. Fried working on this but so far he's been reluctant.
I told you already, I don't know enough about this game to make a good TAS. If you wanna see the Japanese TASs, here they are, I found the topic where someone posted them on the MK forum awhile ago: DP1 http://timeofdeath.net/dp1_lap1_rip.mpg.mpeg GV1 http://timeofdeath.net/gv1_lap1_1201_rip.mpg.mpeg MC2 http://timeofdeath.net/mc2_1lapto2lap_rip.mpg.mpeg CI1 http://timeofdeath.net/ci1_long_turbo.mpg.mpeg MC3 http://timeofdeath.net/mc3_lap1_rip.mpg.mpeg KB1 http://timeofdeath.net/kb1_lap1_rip.mpg.mpeg MC4 http://timeofdeath.net/mc4_lap1_rip.mpg.mpeg KB2 http://timeofdeath.net/kb2_rip.mpg.mpeg VL2 http://timeofdeath.net/vl2_ice_crash_to_0852_rip.mpg.mpeg RR http://timeofdeath.net/rr_lap1_1689_rip.mpg.mpeg

Some Japanese guy made some TASs for SMK, though I don't have them on my computer anymore since my hard drive crashed. Unfortunately there are no smvs, just mpegs, and they don't show what the times are at the ends of the laps, but they're clearly faster than the WRs.

The 916 was done on Zsnes, and I recorded the zmv but it desynced, so that was the last time I ever used Zsnes to record runs. I wasn't able to beat my time in Snes9x, but I managed to get close with a 913 so here's an smv of that: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/692/dkcr913-Michael%20Fried.smv

I have 916 (non-TAS) with rambi and 999 for the others. I tried making a rambi TAS awhile ago, but I got bored fairly quickly so I didn't get too far. Edit: Btw Deviance, weren't you supposed to have submitted a DKC speedrun to SDA and TG by now? Did you ever manage to get 43?

you're right, it is over, but now I have finals! I'll still have enough time after that to finish this run and send it in on time for the TG bounty. The wait will be worth it I promise.
Don't think I forgot about this, Deviance! You have about 3 more weeks.
