If you can beat me by 20 seconds in level 3, I don't think I want to know how much you can beat me by in level 6, so I better leave this challenge to you until I get some more practice and improve at the game, but I suggest that you finish your DKC speed run first before concentrating on other games.

If you get hit, then wouldn't that mean that you lose a kong, or did you mean that you'll never lose both kongs? Edit: Or were you riding enguarde?

Would 47 minutes be with or without saving at Candy?

Check out the Riverside Race video at SDA: http://planetquake.com/sda/other/dkc3.html Throughout the race, there are many times when he rolls and then jumps in order to save time. Do you know if this would save time in DKC? I had already thought of this idea, but I just assumed it didn't save time since Snapdragon didn't do it in his video, but now that I saw it done in DKC3, maybe it's worth a try in DKC. Edit: Btw, how many more levels do you still need to practice, and what do you think the time of your speed run will be?

I don't know about running, but I'm pretty sure that flying, if done correctly, is slightly faster than running. I think I remember testing it in the YI2 and I was able to beat my record by flying with a cape.

Actually that idea I had might actually work. I decided to touch the backs of each box at the end of the levels since Mario starts walking when he touches the box and I thought that would make him reach the end of the screen faster and somehow save time, but since I was too lazy to do a proper test I didn't know for sure, but if touching the front of the box is really faster then my strategy might save time.

Well if you can find 2 seconds worth of improvements then it's probably worth making a new version, but I doubt all the mistakes would even add up to half a second. Edit: Also, giving credit to everyone who gave you ideas wouldn't be practical. Then every video would have to give credit to every person who made a previous version for the same game since people usually watch videos and learn strategies from them before making improvements on them. They would also have to give credit to everyone who gave them any ideas, and for a game like LoZ which has a 22 page topic about it discussing strategies, this would be way too hard. At the nesvideos forums, video game strategies are sort of like public domain. They don't belong to anyone, anyone can use them without having to give credit, and strategies are shared without getting anything in return. If you don't want other people to use your strategies in their videos, then keep them a secret and make your own video, but most of us are willing to share strategies.

So are you going to do that in your speed run or would you rather get a lower actual time?

you'd still have to go back and do the previous levels again Why would you have to do the previous levels again? Just get up to Orangutan Gang without warping, and then go back and take the warp so you can start in the middle of the level.

It's the same thing since by my rules the movie should end when the game is completed.

Yeah, that's kind of annoying. Imagine what it would be like in real life if every time you ran past a barrel you accidentally picked it up.

Would that OoT time be with or without glitches? Edit: By the way, 4:55 would be a pretty cool video to see. How much time do you think you would need to practice in order to be good enough to do that?

I will fix this in the next release. Next release of what? Are you saying you're doing another smb2j speed run?

what exactly does it do? Exactly what it says it does. You select the patches to apply and then download the exe file.

It's a water version of level -3 in the fds version (either that or similar, I don't remember exactly what it looked like). How did you get there? Edit:
perhaps 4-2 doing the minus world trick
I just tried that and it just leads to world 5 as normal.

After the movie ends, it should be impossible to not beat the game What if you can't avoid beating the game, but you can prolong beating the game. In smb2j, I could have held down the jump button and he would have reached the axe later. I think that all that matters is that input no longer affects gameplay, which would be at the exact moment that Mario touches the axe and is no longer moving.

We all knew about minus land, but I never saw that level Sleepz posted a picture of.

So what if it shows more skill? The game isn't over yet. Let's say that by moving the paddle in a certain way, you can break the last brick in only 15 more seconds, even if though you need to put in user input for a longer time. Which is the faster speed run, the one where you broke the last brick sooner or the one where you stopped moving the paddle sooner?

Is this with or without glitches? Here is without: I'm not sure, whatever you want. Of course it also depends on what you consider a glitch and what you don't, and also whether you ban all glitches or just some. I wouldn't consider the shortcut in Bowser's Castle in SMB3 a glitch. However, I would consider the alternate pipe glitch in 8-4 in SMB a glitch, but I would allow it anyway, but I would ban walljumping. In SMB2, I would ban the doublejump glitch only if used to skip a part of the level you normally have to play. In LoZ I would allow the key glitch. I don't know too much about the Megaman games, but I would obviously ban the glitch where you get stuck in a wall and get pushed really fast, and I would also ban the glitch that lets you warp to the other side of the screen.

In this topic, I want people to estimate for different games what they think is the fastest time than anyone could hope for without using save states or slow motion. Of course perfection theoretically could happen but it never will. Here are my estimations for the fastest times I could imagine anyone getting for a few games: SMB - 5:09 SMB2 - 10:00 SMB3 - 11:12 LoZ 1st quest - 31:00 LoZ 2nd quest - 34:00 AoL - 1:08:00 ALttP - 1:39:00 OoT - 5:00:00 DKC - 44:00 Edit: Because of some things that have happened, I've decided to change some of my estimates, and I also add in DKC.

illegitimate speed runs were called "time attacks" No, that's just Arc's definition. I've seen many legit speed runs referred to as timeattacks. Let's call them "illegit speedruns" We already do call them that, just with slightly different wording. By definition, an "emulator movie" can't be legit.

When I got the times I posted above I played with the game slowed down. What exactly do you mean by "decent enough advantage"?

So if I stop my smb2j fmv earlier and send it to you, would you change the description to say it's 23 frames faster? Also, should I do the same with my smb fmv so you can say the length is shorter? The only requirement I've had is that the movie must contain a sequence that leads to the ending without user input required. By my rules, the fmv should be stopped when user input has no effect on the game (which would be when Mario touches the axe, not half a second before). At first your rules might seem to somewhat make sense, but if you think about it more you would see it's nonsense. The perfect example is Arkanoid. What if you position the paddle in such a way that the ball just keeps bouncing without having to move the paddle any more. Let's say you stop the fmv, and then the ball keeps on bouncing for another 20 seconds, and then finally breaks the last brick? When is the game really over? Edit: By the way, I think I tested your fmv and found that I could kill Mario by pressing left. Trying to figure out the exact moment that Mario can't be killed by pressing left wouldn't make sense, there needs to be a fine (and clearly seen) line between when the game is over and when it's not, and the axe provides that line.

If you call them timeattacks you would need to also do something to let people know that the playing is made easier, since "timeattack" is normally used for legit speed runs. "Tool assisted" does let people know that, and if they want to know exactly how the playing was made easier they can go to the link. Edit: My suggestion is to call it something like "tool assisted demo" or "tool assisted recording" in the screen before the movie starts, and also mention that it was made for entertainment purposes, and in the subtitles in the movie just call it a speed run.

Fixed the problem. What about the problem that you stopped the fmv too early? It was really only 23 frames faster. If you want I could edit my fmv by stopping it earlier and send it to you so you can see for yourself. Anyway, if by your rules it's ok to stop the fmv before you actually beat the game, should I also edit my SMB speed run to make it shorter and then send it to you?
