L2: 1+6-2=5 ; 3B I only see 5 keys in level 2. Did you count the one in the room with the narrow passage way and lots of keeses? (L6): 5-1=4 You forgot the key 1 up and 1 left of the start. L5: 3+1-2=2 ; 0B I forgot that you don't have the bow yet in the gohma room and you'll be doing Up+A after getting the bow, so you're correct here. L6: 2+1-1=2 ; 3B I don't see any keys here, unless you counted the one that you get on the way to the ladder. L9: 1+1-3=-1 ; 4B Ok, I see where my mistake was, I didn't see one of those tiny arrows on the map. 3.L6, up then left of start(longer walk) How is it a longer walk? It's on the way to the ladder. Tricked by the one-way room again So are you saying that pushing the block in the + shaped room doesn't open the north door? If so, that's a mistake on the map because it doesn't show an arrow there. Edit: Oh, I see what you did in levels 2 and 6. You included the keys that are off path but easy to get. Edit 2: Ok, here's a key plan. Unless I'm forgetting something really obvious in level 6, this should work, and none of the keys will take too long to get. Level 1: 2-1=1 Level 2: 1+6-2=5 Level 6 (just ladder): 5+1-1=5 Level 8: 5+0-2=3 Level 4: 3+2-1=4 Level 5: 4+1-2=3 Level 6: 3+1-1=3 Level 3: 3+1-2=2 Level 7: 2+1-1=2 Level 9: 2+1-3=0

I'll double check to make sure you didn't make a mistake. Level 1: 2-1=1 Level 2: 1+5-2=4 Level 6 (just ladder): 4+1-1=4 Level 8: 4+0-2=2 Level 4: 2+2-1=3 Level 5: 3+2-2=3 Level 6: 3+0-1=2 Level 3: 2+1-2=1 Level 7: 1+1-1=1 Level 9: 1+0-0=1 It seems I got quite a different result from you. In which levels did I count the keys differently from you? Edit: I just thought of an idea. Do you think it would save time to get the magical key in the 2nd quest? It's less of a detour than in the first quest and the 2nd quest also has harder fighting than the first quest, so skipping some of the keys would save more time.

That route looks pretty good. I wonder why I couldn't have been the one to think of it :( Edit: Did you count up all the keys yet and decide which ones you'll be getting?

(you need ladder for 7) Where in level 7 do you need the ladder? You start out by going left, then take the stairway, then go right, down, right, down, take the stairway, and left 3 times. so I decided to just use my own route What's your route? L1 = 1:07 L2 = 2:34 Were you able to get the candle between 1 and 2, or did the enemies refuse to drop any bombs and prevent you from playing the gambling game?

Did you purposely mess up a few times so Bisqwit will think it's funny and that you're not making the video just to beat Arc?

just too terrfied to mess with the fmv file You can always just make a copy of the fmv file so if something goes wrong and it gets messed up you won't need to worry. I usually stop and make a copy of the fmv many times while making a speed run.

I just tried going to minus land in the fds version of this game, and it's totally different from the NES version. There are 3 levels in minus land, -1, -2, and -3, but no -4. Would anyone like to see a speed run video of me getting to minus land in the fds version and then playing the minus land levels? I just posted about this on GameFAQs, so here are the 3 posts I made where I described the levels:

Wow, level -1 in the Famicom Disk System version is so cool. Maybe I should make a speed run video of it so everyone can see what it looks like. It's like an underwater version of one of the levels with the trees, with the colors messed up and with some strange princess, bowser, and other enemy sprites. Also, the water behind the coins is a darker shade of blue than the rest of the water. You also can't hit question marks or jump on any enemies. There's also a glitch at the end of the level where if you touch the flagpole too high, Mario floats down too far to the right and misses the door he's supposed to go in, and he just gets stuck against the edge of the screen.

Level -2 is a perfectly normal level, except that the castle leading into it in the previous level was big, and the castle at the end of the level was also big, when those castles would normally be small. Level -2 is one of those levels where you run across long bridges. There are also flying fish and turtles in the level. I wonder what level -3 is going to look like.

Level -3 is some weird kind of castle with water instead of lava, and it also has bloobers (which you can jump on since it's not a water level). In one part of the level you have to choose between 3 paths. If you choose the top path you come to a dead end, so you'll be trapped if you're Small Mario and can't break the bricks above you. If you choose the middle path you'll be trapped no matter what since you're surrounded by unbreakable blocks. There's no Bowser at the end of the castle, and unlike the other castles, you actually end up stomping a bloober as you walk to the right after you touch the ax. Then you see the same message as normal, but the letters are in green and there's no Toad. There is no level -4 after this, but if you press the B button it takes you back to the title screen, and you can press the B button to select any world (except for the minus world) and start playing the 2nd quest, just as if you had beaten the game the normal way.

Just start playing the movie, and when you want to start re-recording, save and then load.

If you would allow glitches for an emulator speed run, there are also a lot of other glitches that could be used. For example, if I remember correctly there's a glitch that lets you enter Ganon's Castle without getting any crystals.

You mean timeattack? By my definitions, speed runs and time attacks are the same thing, and can both be used for either legit runs or emulator runs.

For some reason I decided to continue my Super Mario Bros. speed run today, and I just finished 4-2, and so far it's a total of 125 frames faster than my previous version!!!

Do you think you can beat TSA's time for the lightworld?

Ok, I just downloaded it and I'm about to watch it, so I'll see if I have any comments on it. Edit: By the way, here are the answers to your questions: 1. I think you should get the wooden sword before going to level 9, but use it only for Ganon. 2. Only get heart containers if they're on your way. Don't lose time to avoid them. However, if getting heart containers somehow wastes time (for example if you'll have to wait for them to fill up), then you should try to avoid them, but only if avoiding them would waste less time than it would save. Edit 2: Another thing I forgot to mention is that now with the 60 fps hack, you can use that to switch items faster. Also, I noticed that sometimes you don't take the shortest path through screens in the overworld. For example, after you get the 30 rupees, do Up+A, and start walking to level 3, you should start out by going left then up instead of up then left because that way you won't have to go around any rocks. Edit 3: I noticed you gambled 3 times. What do you need so many rupees for. Do you plan on using a lot of arrows? Don't forget that you'll be getting 100 rupees from a cave on the way to level 8. Edit 4: Why did you take such a big detour on the way to level 1? Edit 5: I think it would be faster not to do the key glitch in level 1, though you might want to time yourself to see how long it takes to kill 5 gibdos with the wand or bombs. Edit 6: You forgot to get the key from the stalfoses in level 1. Edit 7: You made quite a few extra half Link-length movements in level 1. Edit 8: Never mind, forget what I said about the gambling, I forgot you're getting the arrows much earlier than Sleepz did. Edit 9: You should have gotten the fairy at the end of level 6 so you don't have to wait for the hearts to fill up.

(Btw, I played the entire Light World very smoothly today without dying and in one sitting, all after one night of practice! Wish I had recorded it...) Do you know how long it took you, and do you plan on ever doing a speed run of the whole game?

Do you think it would be a good idea to use that trick where you leave the room to turn orange wizrobes blue? How does that work? If I have to this three times in one room it will not save bombs. If I remember correctly the way this trick works is you first kill the orange wizzrobes, leave the room and come back, and some of the blue wizzrobes will have turned into orange wizzrobes. Edit: By the way, before you try this trick, you should first try killing the keese, like likes with arrows to save your bombs for the wizzrobes and see if that works.

Did you use arrows for the other enemies so you have more left over for the wizzrobes? If you did that already, you could try redoing a few rooms and see if that affects the item droppings. You could also try moving Link around in such a way to try to get all the wizzrobes to come close together so you can kill a lot of them with one bomb.

Which enemy do you need to kill with bombs? Would it be possible to use arrows instead?

Can someone make a list of what all the level order rules are? Edit: Can someone remind me what you need quake for? I forgot. Also, do you ever need ether besides when you open misery mire? Edit 2: I just remembered you need quake to open turtle rock. Is there anything else you need it for?

Why do you say that? It hasn't been taken off of ZHQ yet. I think it's kind of obvious that I used a glitch (or two) to get such a high score.

Maybe I should make a speed run video of my high score in Jail Break :)

Does anyone know of somewhere I could get a map of the ALttP overworld? That would make it easier for me to think about routes.

Shortly said, I refused the Track'n Field submission because its goal seemed to be "ego", not "entertainment". Its only motivator was to "beat" Arc. So why did you accept the SMB video that was 19 frames faster than mine? It wasn't more entertaining than mine, he just did everything about the same as me but just changed about 1 or 2 things to save a small fraction of a second. You also knew I was currently working on an improved version which was going to be completed very soon, so the other person's video seemed to be "ego", not "entertainment".

If you're practicing for a speed run, you should also make rules for the challenges about how many keys you should start and end the level with.
