Damm you nfq, maybe we should team up. I assume you want to go for the fastest stage time. The reason I'm going for a fastest frame time is because certain levels like Spring Yard would be much simplier to do if your collecting 50 rings in 30 secs. I agree that 17 secs is impossible to do for act 2 The stages I thought up for getting the emeralds are Green hill 1+2 Marble 2 Spring Yard 1+2 X stage inbetween Spring Yard and Scrap Brain Scrap Brain 2 The one thing I've noticed is that an even amount of rings gives you a damage boost to the right and vice versa for odd. I think my special stage 2 up until doing the final bit of the emerald is near perfect, but I guess there are probally alternates.

24 secs is possible nfq, but there are methodical errors which cause you not to get it. I triesd to get, but I couldn't after sycronising the current run and my test run on the first stage I realised that JXQ was getting a much more efficent loop jump compared to me. I was impressed that you did get the optimal loop jump. The only thing I will say is that you should do a pixel perfect jump over the spikes at the end. Anyway I've been trying act 3 and after the juggling act I missed Robotnik, can anyone explain why and how to correct it Here it is http://rapidshare.de/files/21387890/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html

Jumpslashes nuff said, but you should try and get some of them to rise by walking over them during jump slashes.

Here's me completing the second special stage. It wasn't as hard as I thougt, contradictiory to what I said, as there was no real need to manipulate the bouncers as I was able to avoid them. I avoid the one at the end by a pixel and the jump mid way through to avoid the R had to be almost pixel perfect. I was just wondering can JXQ's Act 3 level be improved because I couldn't really nit pick anything out of it except the robotnic battle, which judging from the video, it must be impossible to finish him in one go. I'd rather just hex edit it, if I knew how. http://rapidshare.de/files/21368277/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html

Ok I have done a little more work and two things 1. Act 2 isn't perfect although fun to watch 2. I'm not doing JXQ's route fot that level because I'm getting 50 rings Here's the dummy run for Act 2 I don't get 50 rings as I was just testing out on a pure speed basis based on the route I used. I reckon if I re-align jumps and deveate slighly I think I could complete the stage in 22 secs. http://rapidshare.de/files/21341826/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html Edit: Finally done and oh boy was it hard. I had to retrace my steps several times because I found I didn't have enough rings at the end and I astonished myself by beating act 2 in 21 secs with 50 rings. http://rapidshare.de/files/21358251/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html

Holy... It's certainly going to be an interesting movie when you've finished the game with over half your inventory missing. Minor EDIT: Are the quotes not working properly tonight?
It was me who effectivley discovered that was possible. The only thing that maybe coud be skipped is slingshot, but that would then require us to get the bombs so we could ground just because I proved on emu that its simply not possible to bombchu of bomb jump to the other side in the tree. It's very unlikely that the slingshot will be skipped unless someone finds a way to leave Kokiri early.

Very well Xebra, but I know from the previous thread that obviously no matter what I do, your obviously gonna say that you could beat this time on a console anyday and yes someone doing a single stage time attack could come close to every subsequent stage I do. I thought of a better idea anyway, I'm gonna get redo it, but get the boots and collect 50 rings, I'll probally complete it in roughly the same time. I'm convinced there is some imaginitive ways and devations in routes that only cost an extra 3-4 seconds and collect 50 rings. I would be happy just to finish the run whether people choose to watch it or not. If it appears bad then maybe that would inspire other people to beat it. Out of Interest what happened to your run you were working on... I just watched JXQ's run in full and know how difficult an all emerald run will be, but like I said there will be creative ways round it which is one of the reasons I've decided to do this.

Hold down the jump button when you jump on the bee and keep holding it down. Enable "Show Input" (Options > Misc...) to see how tricks are done. On the Special Stage, you bump into the ball and lose time. It's easy to avoid it, but even better, you could try using them to get boosts forward.
Are you refering to the star shaped thing at the start, that is intended because hitting the 'R' (reverse) balls allows the stage to be rotated in the oposite way. I'm generally pleased with the outcome of the stage at the moment I like it when I jump at the R switch to reverse the stage multiple times at the end. I'll try your advice right now and get back to you shortly. Edit: I know I know my version of Act 2 is nowhere near as fast as JXQ, but I followed one of bizquit's rules and that was to do something completely unexpected and since both our runs aren't going directly head to head, therefore there not comparable. I think it may take a few people by surprise, but I guess most of you will want me to redo this stage, but I'll hexedit it later once I know how. Here it is Act 2 http://rapidshare.de/files/21310822/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html

just so you know, it took SprintGod a good 160 000 rerecords to make sonic 3 & knuckles' movie. so spending 60 rerecords it a very very small number. I hope you have a lot of patience ^^
Yes it is very small amount, but just think how many rerecords the other vastly more tricky stages will take. Its not to bad when your playing it on a console as the frustration of it never really got to be, but the robotic rotation and lack of control is very frustrating as your not trying to pull off a trick e.g. glitch at the start of stage two or Scrap Brain Zone trick. Edit: I've been trying to pull of the glitch at the start of Act 2 and its not coming off, I studied JXQ's movie very closely be slowing it right down to 3%, but I don't get the big bounce from the bee like he does Here's what I mean http://rapidshare.de/files/21303618/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html

O RLY? I thought the well was faster than BB if executed correctly. But you're the expert. If BB is really faster, do BB.
I don't know for sure I was just saying, but bombchu bowling is surely faster. I remember coming up with the theory that the gap in Jabu could be overcome with a roll jump and then pulling out the chu and yada yada yada... I've never been able to perfectly pull it off, but I have been very close to doing it.

The sollution is simple MWL, since this is a TAS you can do bomchu bowling which would be faster than going into the well anyway.

AKA, to bounce off that bee in GH2 you don't need luck, you need timing. You just have to get up to it at a particular time. You may have noticed that in his run, JXQ does not traverse the first portion of the level as fast as possible (he could be a few frames faster) because if he was faster, the bee would not be in the right spot. If you are having trouble with the timing, you could probably hexedit that portion of JXQ's run into yours and it would probably work.
OK thats useful to know, I know JXQ would have obvious objections to me hexediting level 2 out of his run, but I would certainly want the part up and till he gets the speed boots as I want to experiment if its possible to get 50 rings, I fear that its unlkiely though. Now you say it, I don't think any of the levels are randomly setup i.e. millesecond later would cause a different setup. Now to completely sound stupid What is hexediting? How do you do it? Edit: Does anyone no any tricks that can be used on the speacial stages or a beter way I could of done mine. I think I spent over 60 re-records doing that special stage. Goodness knows how many these other stages will take. The stages are certainly a different league from Sonic 2+3

I was just wondering what are the best levels to get 50 rings in. From my movie I can't achive the same luck as JXQ got at the start of level 2. So it may be worth skipping the boots and maybe instead going for 50 rings. The stages I thought of for getting 50 rings are Green hill 1+2 Spring Yard 1+2 Fatal Labrinth 1 Star light zone 2 Scrap brain 1 There just off the top of my head, it would be great if people came up with some other suggestions. I wonder if its possible to beat the game in less than 30 mins (all emeralds of course).

But side hopping is faster up an incline and if you need to move imeadiatley in a forward direction after backwalking then you should do a backflip at the end so you can maintain the momentum.

Then What should I do. How do you rewind back? Cause its getting annoying having to restart and use frame skip to fast forward.

I watched the FODA's movie and all I can say is bravo bravo. I was just wondering what progress has been made since the 1st bowswer battle, wouldn't the next phase be the haunted mansion or would it be better to get the invisible cap first. My logical guess is that Shifting Sandland is the first world to be tactled in the basement followed by lava land; hazy maze and Dire Dire Docks. The world I'm looking most forward to seeing is Tall Tall Mountain, espeacially with all these uber water tricks.

Its much faster to roll into the corners of Jabu, but Yautja knows best when it comes to it and itll take many re-records to achive. Jumpslashing into Jabu is roughly 5 seconds slower than rolling. The actual line of the jump doesn't need to be exact, but the timing needs to be frame perfect. Edit: I loaded the V64 file and it starts off like a speed run until Guamo gets the sword and then he messes about and dies. After that its just him messing about in Kokiri.

OK the test run is complete, but its far from sound. I'm going forn the fastest in game time so it means avoiding huge bonuses at the end of stages. If you complete a stage in less than 30 seconds then you have to wait an extra 6.66 seconds. Which means that I'd have to get less than 24 seconds to make it worth while. The hardest special I've found was the fourth special and the stage that was hardest for ring collecting was Marble 2 which needs a proper route for ring collecting, also any addtional ring collected at the end of a stage adds an extra frame to the time. My logical guess is that you record the whole movie into a GMV file and then use FRAPS to capture the finished live action movie. The problem is that GEN emu just disables FRAPS when I hit the hotkey in order to capture it to AVI.

You don't. You load it in the emulator. There is no video or audio content in the GMV file. The GMV file only contains a sequence of input to the game controller (joypad(s)). The video and audio content comes from the ROM (the game itself), which can only be handled by the emulator. (I assume you meant GMV when you said GEN.)
Yes I meant GMV. Urgh shame I can't convert to AVI

I was just wondering how do run a recorded .GMV file as I have done a dummy run on Sonic 1 Act 1 purely using slow down with no re-record. I can't get the file to run at all and also I can't get FRAPS to work with Gens_Movie emu either.

It may be worth getting FW as a child and getting bombs as an Adult as it takes less than 2 mins to get them as an Adult due to Links extended reach througout the dungeon, he can even skip the second lizardoz battle, its worth considering espeacially as time can be made up by ground jumping and with the warping of FW in Shadow although now I say it, it might not be worth getting FW. I still think its worth considering getting bombs as an Adult and skipping the well as a child.

Ok here's the list of bombchu's Child 1: Spirit 1: Beamos 1. Moat outside Hyrule 1. Boulders at Goron city 2. Dondongo's eyes 1. Boss floor at Dondongo 2. Boulders at death mountain 1. Great Fairy 1. Boulders at Zora's river 2. Platform boost in Jabu 1. Getting more bombcu's from well Adult (nothing here is really skipable) 1. Shadow early boost 2. Blowing two rock structures in Shadow 1. Backflip hover boost in Shadow (Acryte's video) 1. Mega jump in Forest to skip using key 1. For beamos in Adult Spirit 1. For rock structure at the end of Spirit Technically you could use 16 bombchu's or even less if you took longer more awkward routes e.g. skipping boulders in Goron City or not doing moat skip, but it would sacrifice a lot of time. The ones that are optionally skippable are in bold.
