I don't think this is a good idea, the recently published quad was accepted because if was somewhat novel (as in the first). Don't expect people to be so warm to this idea second time round.

Hmmm, something that's supposed to deal with that is now missing in the GB update code, however, you can avoid the problem by setting frameskip=0 for GB games. (options > speed > frame skip > skip 0)
I've tried it out, sorry it doesn't work.

I'm actually curious as to whats exactly stored within each savestate, since surely you would need to store the characters postion motion, acceleration, room state, and possibly many other things.

This site would not accept such a run, but if it is just for fun than knock yourself out. Slowdown in snes9x is usually the "-" and "=" buttons, but frame advance, which is "\", is much better.
If a run had arbitrary rules that made the game more interesting to watch, why wouldn't it be accepted? This site is about "entertainment."
The trouble with runs that have unusual goals or aim solely for entertainment is that there often very hard to obselete, since it can be quite difficult at times to remain constantly within relatively unclear goals or could pose problems much like the River City Ransom has caused or pose an impossible obseletion like the SNES Mortal Kombat movie.

How come when I try to update frames using frame advance I don't actually see anything on screen happening despite the fact that when I unpause the game? it goes the place I should be which is a few seconds ahead. I've never had this problem until the current 20 version came along.

For the next 16 star run: This is less that 2/3 of a second slower than the fastest "Blast Away the Wall" so far, but it's pretty unoptimized. Its probably nothing, but maybe someone can test a little and see if this method has any potential.
That has to be faster surely, the other strat that was used before is probally optimal within 1-2 frames. I reckon thats probally a second faster if fully optimized. I have a pretty good idea how much the next improvement run should be, although it will be tricky again to try and shave more frames across the game in general.

Hello. I only have 1 question and then i'll stfu. where do i find Guano's speedrun? i want to see it ")
You'll need to download the AVI from the site, or you can find it on google videos.

I could give you some starter pointers over IRC, although I'd assume you have some knowledge of how emulators work to a certain extent e.g. loading, playing back movies. IIRC there is very little difference between a any% run and a 100% unless there is glitches that help skip to some of the later worlds more quickly.

Well in this game, you have the same "problem" that you have in every 2 player game mode that is run by a single person: it never looks quite like it was actually done by 2 players (another example of this is Contra 3)
I agree with this point, a 2p run should try to make the players as independent as possible, although this is generally very hard for a game of this nature. The SoR3 WIP's are probally the best example of what I'm trying to say. This is why all the symetry stuff annoyed me, although I fully agree it is essential that should be used at various points of any given run since its nearly impossible to do in real time, but overuse can cause a movie to look like 1 person controlling 2 players, much like the the superplay where the Japanese guy controlled two ships at once in an arcade vertical shooter. Sadly I can't find the video at the moment.

Does this change what Acryte proposed? If not how does it differ?

When playing Mario Bros there is a few simple assumptions that can be made about it. 1. First the left+right stand jump should alway be used at the beggining of each new area in order to get the fastest inital speed. 2. After that B should always be held, with exception to circumstances where it would be theoretically quicker to go through a wall. 3. When entering a new area Mario always heads right. 4. Up button is never required. 5. A general guided path is required, e.g Mario needs to enter a pipe or reach the goal on the far right. Of course to get something which could remotely TAS SMB efficently would takes 100's of rules and millions of re-records, but the rules would prevent the Bot from testing Billions or even trillions of pointless input. EDIT: Would it be to program a bot to disasemble a rom so it can analyse the structure and strutural weaknesses of a game, I guess that feature would be neccessary in a universal TASbot.

When I was testing out Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon how come there is a lot of unnatural lag in it, PJ64 more or less emulates it perfectly yet Mupen has many inprecisions in doing it, although stragely the game is very stable to TAS. Can possible updates remove this or is this more to do with pluggin issues?

About the run: at what point is a run so easy to optimize that it no longer becomes impressive to watch? Honestly, if you know all the questions ahead of time, it takes little to no effort to make a run that beats the game as fast as possible.
At what point do you reject every run, because it comes down to knowing the levels' layout beforehand (in platformers) or know exactly which way to powerup characters (in RPGs)? Also my two cents: the insistence that you need to be entertained the entire length of a run by doing stupid shit (come on, in Mario 64 jumping on/off carpets in Rainbow Ride just looks stupid, it's not entertaining) just so that it gets published on this site is BS. What's the point of attempting to save every frame if the site's FAQ doesn't even confirm it as the point of the site? (please note I'm not trying to get *this* run published at all, it's not the best game choice... but some attitudes have seriously annoyed me, I just need to vent something)
This is a very straight forward game to TAS, just test which is the right answer and optimally select the answer at the earliest frame, there is no TASing skill whatsoever to that. How long did it take you to do? A couple of hours at the most I'd say. All the other games you've mentioned have 100's,1000,s,10,000's of relistic possibities to test and even then its likely that the fastest method isn't found.

No, he's implying that this forum values entertainment way too much.
I wasn't trying to directly imply that, the thing with FPS's is that they are difficult to follow first espeacially if you're knowledge is thin on the game itself, but once you're used to it can be very entertaining and cool. I think I'll give this another shot on the easiest setting and try and break 14 mins, prepare for even more glitches this time, as well as that I've learned what things I can avoid collecting, mainly becuase I overestimated boss energy and mass enemy problems. TASing should also be easier now that I know the brightness can be increased using the 1.6 pluggin, since my movements were very approxiamte in the dark areas.

This often causes confusion, we you collect one deku nut that means you get 5 of them, to beat Ganon you need 10, although it may be of benifit using them against the lizardoz and the stalfos in the ascent to Ganondorf.

Do you mean additional savestates, as opposed to the embedded state for movies that start from a savestate?
I meant addtional savestates, so people can upload them for others to test, watch a snapshot or to save them watching the movie from the begining.

Are people really voting "meh" and "no" on this? This has been my most anticipated TAS pretty much forever; if it's anything like what we've already seen , I can't understand the complaints.
the "meh" and "no" votes were most likely to be people who anticapated, but were somewhat disapointed or not thrilled with the result, and you also seem to implying that you voted "yes" purley out of anticapation of the run beforehand.

why would you want 30 stars? the 100 coin star is not needed after you can make MIPS appear (15 stars).
The goals of the run would be a lot more consistent, viewers will be confused as to what there watching going by the current rules.

Bisqwit, the guy you linked in that video is a different person, the guy in that video is Ingram Wilcox, the other guy I mentioned is Charles Ingram if you look at the news link I showed you'll see that the pictures of the two people definitely don't match up.

If only I could find a video of it, but I think this moment best any millionaire moment, I have the orginal text for it. £500,000 question For the £500,000 question, he was asked: "Baron Haussmann is best known for his planning of which city? Rome, Paris, Berlin, Athens." Ingram: "I think it is Berlin. Chris Tarrant "I think Haussmann is a more German name than Italian or Parisian or Athens. "I am really not sure. I'm never sure. If I was at home, I would be saying Berlin if I was watching this on TV." A cough was then heard, which the prosecution claim sounded like someone saying the word "no". Ingram: "I do not think it's Paris." Cough. Ingram: "I do not think it's Athens, I am sure it is not Rome. "I would have thought it's Berlin but there's a chance it is Paris but I am not sure. "Think, think, think! I know I have read this, I think it is Berlin, it could be Paris. "I think it is Paris." Cough. Ingram: "Yes, I am going to play." Tarrant: "Hang on, where are we?" Ingram: "I am just talking to myself. It is either Berlin or Paris. I think it is Paris." Cough. Ingram: "I am going to play Paris." Tarrant: "You were convinced it was Berlin." Ingram: "I know. I think it's Paris." Tarrant: "He thought it was Berlin, Berlin, Berlin. "You changed your answer to Paris. "That brought you £500,000. "What a man! What a man. Quite an amazing man."
