A friend of mine who owns this game told me he grabbed a star in LLL, after jumping off lava. So, he was dead as he went into the star. Apparently, the game gave him 255 stars. Someone should look into this. Maybe his game had a problem, or maybe it's a bug in all Mario 64 games.
I heard about some bug like that found in the beta version at E3 in 96, but I can tell you for a fact that when your energy is zero its not possible to collect stars although everything else is possible, it can be quite simply done if you have a gameshark and use the levatation cheat, or if you use the wingcap+cannon.

This sceenshot sums up the game pretty well Its amazing to think that stages 3+4 are completely pointless in terms of the games quest. Nice improvement, I'm still awaiting a 2p movie.

I've watched the video myself and examined in V-Dub via downloading the raw AVI from YouTube, there are several questionable things that happen in the video. 1. I tried this myself over a year ago and it didn't work after quite some trying. Today I used Game Shark to help with the levatating part and it didn't work 2. The person got knocked sideways, there is no direction towards going through the wall itself 3. The person has double heart fairy magic, an explosive should only cause the loss of 1/4 of heart which happens initally, but very suddenly a whole heart is lost after that 1/4 has been depleted, that shouldn't happen. 4. The camera suddenly switches to going behind Link this shouldn't happen when going through a wall it should natuarly stay behind Link 5. The room appears loaded, no textures should exist apart from the beamos. EDIT: To fuly confirm it the previous room he left should be in complete view, since that is the currently loaded room. We don't see that at all. EDIT_2: The author of the video has now fully admitted it.

You would still need to find improvements elsewhere to make up for the time, I think looking at it now, I probally wouldn't except an improvement run that doesn't beat 15 mins.

I've checked myself and it certainly too high to make a ideal connection with the tile boundary. EDIT: I did some testing on the first level and I managed to get the weird running effect seen in Level 2 of Nitsuja's WIP, although sadly Mario lost a huge amount of momentum activating the trick, so it ended up being slower, it does make me think though could activating the effect at the start of level 1 save time. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/5540/Super%20Mario%20Bros.%203%20%28U%29%20%28PRG1%29%20%5B%21%5D%20Genisto.fcm If a one frame improvement can't be found, I have a different route through the level which is 3 frames slower, but would at least mean you don't have to sacrifice time at the end and would prevent viewers from thinking that they've witnessed an obvious improvement/mistake. EDIT_2: Sorry my mistake, being there quicker meant you were able to sacrifice time in order to get the mushroom card.

I watched it and I'm deeply confused about the choices made. How come you miss enemies on several occassions? initally I thought the game has desynced but it came apparent that it wasn't the case. Is all that weird movement in field areas to avoid battles or to manipulate a better battle in the near future?

page 47 has the latest WIP. And even faster than that (in my opinion, from my tests) is sidehopping off of a lilypad; deku Link stays facing sideways, and each water bounce retains slightly faster than normal sidehopping speed.
I'm pretty sure Deku Spining would have been more effective, I didn't mention it at the time as it was only a minor improvement, and Compost he just entered Snowhead Temple how far hes into it I don't know, I'm able to capture AVI's with FRAPS but its caused complaints in the past, you'll need Mupen and Possibly a Rice 6.0 or 6.1.1 video pluggin to view the movie.

I tested it out anyway to see if it had any use and sadly the answer is no, the area is simply too tight to steer round, and I had to use the bridge to get an extra couple of BLJs but it not possible to use normally becuase Mario doesn't go backwards fast enough, overall I managed to get 13 bljs in the video I only used 10, but I did manage to get a slight better result with 11 after I made this video. Although I might reccomed to R_Z that it might be a good entertainment trade off to his CCC run. http://files.filefront.com/BLJavi/;7493406;/fileinfo.html

Hey, I had a thought. You know those checkered platforms on the first and last Bowser levels? I think they could be used as BLJ points. If they were used, it would mean grabbing another star somewhere else, because the 1st Bowser level won't have its star collected. It's definitely worth trying.
Do you mean the rotating platforms or the area where you need to press the switch in order to get the stairs? If you mean the latter then its impossible becuase its a slidey slope, the rotating ones should be possible although I'm not sure if you be able to rev enough blj's or have enough control around the tight areas.

It's possible, I just tried and it worked, but it's no less than 30 frames slower because of not quite having full a full P-meter going into the next room.
I had a go at this myself and as you said its just over 20 frames slower, is there any possible way to conserve the P-meter since it at full when you enter but decreases a few notches when you enter the next area, its a shame really a full P-meter would allow roughly a 30 frame improvement. I also tried going through every wall until I got to the end but there is too many obstactles and that diagonal thomp slows Mario down quite a bit

What you have to realise about the camera system is that it was a very unique feature for its time and its very horrible with its jerky fixed changes, nowhere near as good as its next installment even though people made a bigger fuss of it in SMS. Still, we generally favoured angles which were more favoured to TASing than anything else most of the complaints are only related to cannot see Mario for a split second.

All I'll say is that I would like to discourgage people judging movies solely along these lines, we've already had such issues with stylistic choices in 2D games.

Its a descent attempt but its very hard to gage the depth given the fact its a 3D map.

Guano, if you're getting the lullaby first, have you remembered to use soft block pushes on the blocks at the moat?

Finally suceeded... just Yeah I figured out you need to use that B+C speacial attack on the twins but face the oposite way and using a well timed turn punch combo is effective as well. I've also noticed that the TAS is one of the longest non obseleted runs on the site. I think I discovered a glitch with the knife which allows you to have instant kills on minor enemies without throwing it awat something which may save a lot of time in an improvement run.

Wouldn't you have to get the lullaby first to do that? since it currently impossible to get bombchus without it to my knowledge.

Seemed flawless, is it definitely impossible to get the vine boost by richocheting down to the web the old way? Was it slower to use a deku stick to ricochet off the vines before taking on the scrubs?

How to succumb to SOR1 like so many others in the past I used to be a pro at this game 10+ years ago so much so that I could beat the game using only one life, but I've lost my touch quite a bit since then, and yeah its those bitch twins in the last level that get me, since there is no police attack in the last level. I have to admit even though Mona and Lisa have psychic powers and deadly tag team moves in the third installment there still harder in the original version.

A yes vote from me, although after a while it did begin to get repetive in terms of strategies and I often got confused as to why certain choices were made. Can't wait for MK64 100%.

Very good run and high standard throughout, I checked the last battle and its the same frame count as the 16 star, although technically the method me+SL would have been quicker if it wasn't for the pause termination bug. Yes vote BTW

Out of interest how come you have a faster run on another site which is in the same catagory?

That looked great and you've now offically overcome the greatest obstacle in the game bar desyncs. Is there any predetermined bomb drops in the Temple? or does all have to be manipulated incase anyone is wondering Swordless Link has a YouTube video of what the temple might resemble in a TAS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2Y-Va73Uig
