The game programmers probably gave this RAM address the start up value 0 as in "has not been set yet" and didn't consider that the value 0 corresponds to one of the questions. In order to get teleported to the coffin room later on, we will simply have to make the sphinx ask the map question, which will set the teleportation to the coffin room. This will as usual require some luck to get him to ask this very question.
Ah well, almost looked like smooth sailing at that point. So after the Broom query is done and stuff gotten and gone back, then it's a matter of pure luck/frame specific goodness to pull it off? Argh. And does this 0 Value always queue up on a fresh power-up on a console.. or is it simply emu based and then on a console it remains as cross your fingers? Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Does the Sphinx always teleport to the same place.. or is there a table consulted and it sends you to a certain place dependant on the frame, much like the riddle? Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Thanks to ZenicReverie I have managed to improve the published run by 302 frames. Here's the input file: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1443971622/shadowgate_randil_zenicreverie.fm2 Ideas and feedback are appreciated. Note that this is not necessarily the final version.
O.O?! Seriously?! Considering how optimized it looked the LAST time, this is insane! Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

All actions always take 1 charge. You die when you charge hits 0. If both your torches are lit, both of them will drain a charge when you perform an action. As for rooms that drain no charge, I wrote a lua script that looped through all the rooms in the game, testing which rooms drained no charges. There are a total of 5 such rooms in the game, namely:
What a surprise that those specific rooms are the ones with torches that are perma-lit. ^^ Mind you, I find it amusing that this also means the outside scenes, like the one with lightning, can also lead to your death.. because after all, Lunar Eclipses are that frequent. ^^; So what we know is... 0 Charges = Game Over 1 Action = 1 Charge 1 Charge Left = Use that action to light another Torch! 1 Torch = 60 Charges 5 Rooms = Charge Free Zones - Do whatcha gotta do to make it happen 7 Charges Left = Warning Music begins playing Sphinx is Frame Specific with 6 different frames. The percentile of that frame coming forth are; Broom 15.45138889 Skull 13.88888889 Map 18.75 Mirror 15.79861111 Bellow 15.625 Horseshoe 20.48611111 So we know the Horseshoe is truly lucky.. superstitious programmers no doubt. Map is also equally good in a pinch. The Lightning outside is random as hell and can be the game killer with 6 bolts, but can be as light as 3. So.... in the end, the main speedrun killers are the Sphinx and the Lightning Bolts. Everything else should be item menu management, optimum torch aquisition and clockwork precision. Definitely more then we knew years ago. Considering how many improvements have been made from the first time this was ever TAS'd, really cool to still be learning stuff. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

I don't usually use emulators, and I'm not familiar with any of the TASing tools. I really appreciate your help in investigating this. theseawolf1 mentioned in the SDA thread that torches have a 60 action timer (lighting a torch will drain 1 action from the torch you just lit though), but only certain things you do use up an action. That should help you in testing.
Yeah, that's basically how torches work. I have RAM addresses for how many torch charges are left, and I keep an eye on them while testing things. To make matters more confusing, there are rooms where torch charges aren't drained, no matter what you do in the room - for example the book room with the special torch. I haven't mapped out exactly what rooms don't drain torch charges (there aren't many, but I seem to remember that there are a few more), maybe that could be useful.
o.o? Is there a way to come up with a small list of rooms where 0 charges are? As well, do all actions take exactly 1 charge or are there some that take more? Definitely curious about these 2 things as I know they'd definitely help out. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

I'm sorry, but I was bored to tears. This was an absolutely AWFUL choice when compared to the original. It totally lacked the entertainment value of the first by far, and the Piano part was ruined by the fact the game interupted over it with the crappy music and didn't give a chance to explore more freely. These minigames dragged on, especially the last one, and the fact it was indecipherable squiggles 95% of the time as opposed to the glorious artwork? No. The ONLY redeeming part was the very last picture as that was genuinely amusing.. but outside of that.. despite the proficiency on the stylus.. this was utter.. yeah.. not good at all unfortunately. I voted No. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

When a game is coded so good, even the pros can't find glitches, you KNOW it's got the makings of excellence! And this TAS shows that clearly! Even if some parts in the game were made annoying on purpose.. to watch someone speed through with such reckless abandon is amazing! Especially knowing a single hit screws you right there on that difficulty. Definitely a Yes vote! :) Now make a damn encode so more people can see this game, and possibly include a link to where the game can be still PURCHASED, because I honestly think it's the least you could do to motivate the author even more while he makes the sequel. [Currently being made right now] [Kinda like something on the lines of; http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=30&products_id=86 Which is the direct link to the product, and I may add, something I have already purchased last year with 0 regrets! Including virtually everything there on RetroUSB actually!] Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

It was fast... but it looked... meh. My reasoning of that is due to the fact that there's tons of wasted shots. The Bases being the main offender of it. I mean it was phenomenal except fpr that as it looked.. sloppy.. amateurish.. like a normal player playing an otherwise brilliant looking game. So voted high meh.. because if it was well done technically.. but crap on the entertainment in those 2 core areas. :( Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

I voted no because honestly.. those camera angles were.. yeah.. not that terribly well done. I have a fair understanding of this title and learned a lot over the past few years... and even with that knowledge, I had trouble following totally. The other one had the odd angle issue as well, but mostly it was a lot easier to follow and therefore to me personally, felt more entertaining. But because I've never TAS'd Super Mario 64, nor have the desire to ever do so, it's my opinion, take it or leave it. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

WTF? Wow.. I seriously was expecting this to be a joke.. but this just redefined GLITCHY in the DKC world. Too bad there's 4 digits in the timer, or this coulda been the 0:07 run. Wow.. definite yes vote! Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

There is a precedent for rejecting runs because a better one is in production (see here), but IMO it's a horrendously stupid one, as it resulted in what I'm pretty sure was a good submission being rejected, while the movie that was supposedly "better" is nowhere to be found.

It takes a LOT of skill to blaze through most Arcade titles. Moreso, and luck, to do it on a Single Credit! I personally feel that an Arcade TAS should be.. something akin to some wunderkid down to his last quarter.. pops it into the machine.. and gives the performance of a lifetime that catapaults them to fame. Honestly.. ANYONE can drop in an assload of quarters and speed through a game. It takes someone with SKILL to do it on a single quarter. It takes a TAS to do it not only on a Single Quarter, but in a manner that defies all belief in how it does it...and considering what a TAS is meant to be.. But this is just my personal thoughts.. Voted meh. Honestly? I got bored watching this, and it's not really Scrimpy's fault per se. The lack of proper scrolling made me want to vote No as it just got absolutely annoying as hell.. but the fact there was a bit of diversity and it was indeed speedy [In some cases stunning how fast some of thosr bosses bit the dust] made it just BARELY scratch a meh. I know the platform is limited in what it can do.. but still.. not that great of a port. Interesting at times though.. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Hands down one of the best movies to be released all year! Definitely Star worthy, and believe me, I will rarely EVER say that about a movie! Yes vote all the way for virtually everything this run has to offer, which is speed, entertainment and constant WTF?! Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Definitely a Yes vote! I was totally entertained, but I do agree that a camhack would make it a bit easier to take it all in. Still had everything it needed to be totally entertaining all throughout. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

To no surprise, someone voted no... definitely curious as to why as this run had EVERYTHING! 1-1 alone was truly epic! And 1-2? Seriously, the encode should kill the music briefly and play Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet Ride when Toad rocks the Carpet of Awesomes. Thoroughly entertaining through and through! A definitive Yes vote and a candidate for TAS of the Year! [Yes, I said it! Of The Year!] Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

A bit slow to start, but when it picked up, it was definitely quite entertaining. I really liked the 23 hit 99% combo as well. :) Not quite the fatality glitchiness I was totally hoping for, but it was amusing to see Brutalities being referred to as Fatalities. And the end of Kahn? Total amusement! :) Definitely well thought out and well done and a definite Yes! Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

It wasn't bad... but I agree.. I've been spoiled by 1 and 0 Star runs so that as good looking as this is, it's not as good as I could hope for. If this was like a WIP towards a 120 Star run, that would be phenomenal.. but it's not. It was a hard call as it was borderline Meh/No.. but many have made the valid point of how arbitrary anything outside of 0 and 120 has become. There's always going to be something missing or feeling left out and the levels selected will always come down to a "They did all those in this run, but xxx level would've taken 6 extra seconds but looked way more entertaining! That would've been an acceptable trade-off!" I wouldn't call this pointless as I would call it a primer for things to come. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

I've had experience with this as I verified the current WR on this 5 and a bit years ago. I can definitely sympathize with any poor soul getting this game and being.. dominated on the 1st level. The difficulty and learning curve is BRUTAL! I almost voted Meh though, as I'd have figured a TAS would beat the WR on Points.. but then I realized just how much longer this would end up being to pull that off.. and the game forces things on long enough. I must profess, the 2 glitches exhibited totally rocked! ESPECIALLY The rope glitch where he makes Spiderman look like an amateur. Those 2 bumped me up to a definitive Yes! Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Um... DAYUM?! That movie could be 3hrs long and at the rate it's going, it'd STILL be entertaining and WTF-Inducing! I think it'd be awesome if you were able to take a P-Switch into the Switch room and toss it just high enough that when you hit the switch, the P-Switch is over top of the OTHER Color Switch, so it looks like the game is declaring all the boxes are going to be replaced by that P-Switch. Outside of that? Wow... just.. wow... Mr. Kelly R. Flewin
