I still play this game online, and there's no doubt this will bring a lot of new activity to the game, which is pretty exciting indeed! My only worry is that, apart from the new graphics, the version they release may be fairly far behind what's currently available due to fan-made patches/expansions. Most notably, as scrimpeh mentioned, the Forgotten Empires, which introduced a bunch of new things and made an effort to balance the game better. Hopefully the Steam Workshop will solve that, though.

Nice job finishing the run, Masterjun! I was kinda hoping to be beaten even harder, but maybe this category doesn't have much left to it now (however, I'd love to be proven wrong!). In any case, it's an improvement, and it's nice to finally see a Yoshi run on a more modern emulator. I think you did great on the autoscroller, and the Kamek boost was a nice little surprise to me. The final bowser fight is indeed pretty tough. One comment I'll make is, in the 100% run, we fired the 3rd and 2nd last shots so that the 2nd last shot damaged bowser immediately after the 3rd last one did. This was faster when we tested it, as it meant there was no recovery period in between these hits, and Bowser was closer to us for the final shot. I dunno if you compared your fight the the 100% version, but if not it should be worth a look. Apart from that I'd happily vote yes, and congrats!

That's hardly fair; neither can I.

total yes vote from me loved this game back in the day and getting 100% can sometime be a pain now if we could see the GBA version 100% with the extra levels that would be neat. good job working on this tas very nice
You're in luck! There is a 100% TAS of the GBA-exclusive levels by zvsp: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm18775342 Thanks for all the comments so far!

A truly great compilation of all the best and wackiest routes/tricks/glitches you guys have found over the years. Thanks to all the contributors, particularly those who put this run together. My expectations were far surpassed. It was a real pleasure to watch! (Yes vote!)

I think the final bowser fight can be improved by a little bit too; I didn't really understand how the eggs spawned when I made it. These are just small optimisations though. I don't know of any new tricks or route changes that can be used.

Some people mentioned Yoshi's Island 100% already, and I'd like to request continuance for it. There are several reasons why our run won't sync on the newer emulators. The biggest problem is probably that there's virtually no lag on Snes9x 1.43 when lots of sprites are active. I don't think it's really an issue to the point where we'd have to change our routes to accommodate the lag, but when it comes to unnecessary egg antics, future runs will likely have to be less flamboyant in some places. A good example is our 1-4 boss fight, where we spam a load of egg shots. If you do just a few egg shots at once on console, especially if some stars are spawned from red eggs, the game will slow down considerably. Of course, 1.43 was our best option at the time, and we're too far now to think about restarting.

We are currently on 4-8! After this level is done, we will probably release more smvs/videos.

We're currently about halfway through 4-5. I can't work on the run for the next few weeks, but after that we plan to get a lot done this summer. :)

The test run looks great overall! :) The only question I have is why did you use door 1 in 6-8? Is it really faster than door 4?

Are you going to do the extra levels as well? I don't have much time now; will post more later.

Awesome to see you finished this. I'll post more later, but no double gatehack on 6-7?

We already decided near when we started the run not to warp to different levels. The 1-1 warps we know about are in 1-1, 2-1, 2-4, 2-5, 3-1 and 4-7. Doing it in 1-1 is obviously pointless and the 2-5 one is too close to the end of the level to be worth using. 2-1 and 2-4 in particular have some really cool tricks, so it'd be a shame to skip them. :P Also, resets seem like a good option. Since we'll start the X-1 levels with no eggs, a little bit of time will be lost in 2-1 and 3-1, but it's very small compared to the time saved. Resetting after the 'perfect' message would be pretty arbitrary, and the whole score summary at the end of the world is a big part of what the resets skip.

This'll probably be answered in the individual level comments, but why did you lose time in Rambi Rumble? Is skipping Rambi not possible on the 1.1 ROM, or is there some other reason I missed? I loved the run, of course. I haven't been following dkc2 much, so it was really nice and refreshing to see all the new tricks. Great work to all of you! :)

At least 4 levels in world 2 have some pretty big time savers not present in our old WIP now, thanks to wall jumping and some new tricks/ideas. The new WIP's still at 1-6, but I'll start working on it again in a few weeks. Hopefully most of the stuff that's already optimal can be hexed.

We now have every pre-Wii DKC run! One or two just need updating. :) Excellent job to everybody who worked on this, especially Dooty. It's nice to see that you've given this game the same ruthless treatment you gave DKC2. It was a pleasure to watch. Easy yes!

I was searching for some yoshi's island runs on nicovideo and found a 100% test run from 4-3 to 4-8 that somebody made. It doesn't look optimised at all, but it's pretty fun to watch. For anybody who's interested. http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm12154271 http://www.nicozon.net/watch/sm12154271 Also, I found a room-by-room comparison video of our world 1 against spezzafer's. http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm12331641 http://www.nicozon.net/watch/sm12331641

Spiral staircase to BitS was brilliant. Everything else was pretty damn great too! Now go and make a multi-million rerecords 120 star TAS. :)

I noticed a while ago that you speed up slightly every time you pass over a rock as the hovercraft. I actually managed to go fast enough to match the 3rd boat's speed, but wasn't able to go up a waterfall. Didn't test it too much though.

well we were gonna do it as fast as possible with no warps because we havent seen anyone else do it.
Perhaps there's a good reason for why nobody else has done it. An any% warpless would be very similar to the 100%, but about half as long, no? Seems pointless to me.

How much of the old run did you actually reuse? I just want to make it clear that I didn't actually TAS any of the new stuff here, and I don't want to to take any credit for your awesome work, Dooty. :)

Not a lot happened for quite a while, but over the last month progress has picked up a lot and we've completed 3 levels and a bit. Currently we're at the start of 2-7 and altogether have improved spezzafer's WIP by 4227 frames (not including time lost in 2-1).

No, not breaking DK barrels will kinda compensate Castle Crush loss, but that's not all, I can sacrifice more kongs in hard mode, see Bramble Blast for example. (here)

it could be that complete the stage the new any% way, go back and get the rambi bonus, then get the other bonus and start+select inside the bonus may be faster
I'll test it right away...
Excellent WIP! Looks a lot better than the current run. Looking forward to see how else you beat it. :)

Thanks for the reply, that video you gave me is a really good reference I have questions about the 33 speed thing though, Ive seen a TAS where mario was hugging this pipe, and wall jumping. In other words he didnt back away from the wall like what would normally happen I can show you the video ( but i gota go find it first >< i lost the link) how do you suppose that guy did that? It was a quick double jump to scale the pipe, first a walljump, then while sticking to the pipe, jumping again. Mario flew into the pipe going right, facing left as he did the walljumping ( and holding a green shell) then when he scaled the pipe, he continued right
If it was in a hack, it 'may' have been a custom block like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9-PFqBqnHE This doesn't look very much what you described though. A video would be helpful. :)
