No, not the speedy variant of Breakout, but the shmup/platformer featuring a jumping car. Braceyj's disappointing movie led me to create what I think is a good example of how to time/score-attack this game. I go at full speed the entire first level, except for the 3 jumps across the rock piles, where you can't avoid slowing down after you land. I score 11,000 points, and I only miss a few enemies. Some of them just don't seem possible to hit. In that case, I always choose whichever object gives the most points. That group of 4-6 falling rocks that I go "under" right before the 1st rockpile might be destroyable. http://home.adelphia.net/~cellstage2/breakthru-omegaflarex.fcm

This was one of my favorite games as a kid even though I remember it being very very frustrating. That jumping car was just too cool. Anyway, I voted no. It was absolutely boring. You could've saved a lot of time by killing stuff rather than jumping over them. There doesn't appear to be any frames lost for shooting, but you slow down quite a bit after every jump. You just didn't beat it as fast as possible. Next time, go for as many kills as you can while still maintaining top speed. I'm positive a timeattack of this game can be entertaining.

Voted no. There's some nice dodging in a few places, but you let enemies get away and the bosses can obviously be killed faster. Give it another shot, but next time, do 100% kills and waste the bosses as fast as you can.

At one point I owned around 130, but I ebayed nearly half of them, and kept most of the good stuff. Unfortunately, I'm a bit of a spoiled brat ever since I discovered RGB (which the NES can't do without an incredibly-expensive mod job), so I had to pack my console away.

Hey, that's cool. I remember playing one of these at K-Mart a loooooooong time ago. My favorite piece of 8-bit Nintendo hardware is the Famicom Titler. You can swap the Titler's PPU for the NES' and get perfect, crystal clear RGB out of it. Too bad they're almost impossible to find and cost a fortune to attain. http://hawanja.com/famicom_titler.htm

One thing you didn't do was increase the battle/text speed. For a time attack, that's absolutely necessary. Also, there was no manipulation for critical hits. Kain is fine jumping, but Cecil could be doing a lot more damage.

Yup, I tried everything. No dice. I'll get it from someone in the IRC channel tomorrow.

If you check the box under video settings that says "allow more than 8 sprites per line", that helps a LOT with slowdown and/or flicker. I saw very little in Cheez's run. I too vote for killing as much as you can. That first flying stage looked amazing.

It worked fine for me with boxes 1 (WIP timing) and 4 (Fake mute desync) checked. I watched up until halfway through the 3rd dungeon with no problems. Remember, to watch movies in nitsuja's improvement versions of snes9x, you need to let the game run for 10 seconds first, otherwise they will almost always desync. I just activate turbo mode until I get to where the story text starts and start the movie then.

Yeah, King of Dragons is much more fast-paced. I'm really looking forward to this run, since I've never played the CPS-1 version.

i would also like to record 3 players on final burn alpha but it doesnt have frame advance yet
Yes it does. F1 is normally the fast-forward key, but if you push it while the game is paused, it acts as frame advance. It works great, I did a test of level 1 in Sonic Wings 2 with no problems. This game is pretty cool, but I personally think the D&D games trounce it in every category. I'd love to see a no-damage run in Tower of Doom where the Red Dragon gets killed. Last time I played it, I had to use dozens of credits to win.

Hahahah, that was a hilarious run. Something like that should definitely be on this site, just to show how to completely break a game by simply pushing left and right at the same time. Still, for this particular run I'm voting no. You said it yourself - it's not optimized.

Do you mean that fast-forwarding was the same as waiting through it at normal speed, or do you mean that fast forwarding didn't work to fix it?
It was the same as waiting 10 seconds in real time. I tested both ways several times, and there were no desyncs in either case.

It works! I had to play around with some of the settings for a bit, though. Make sure you post what sound sync settings are in the movie. This one has boxes 1, 4, and 5 checked. It wouldn't work unless I ran it from a clean ROM load. I waited until the story text appeared in the game before starting the movie. Fast-forwarding to that point made no difference.

I posted this back on page 3, but I guess nobody paid attention.
- When selecting options or your character, it's faster just to hold down the direction on the D-pad rather than rapid-firing it. - To pull off any special or finishing move, there needs to be a minumum of 2 empty input frames between each button press. For instance, do do Reptile's Head Snack fatality, you need to input the following (assuming you're the correct distance away from your opponent): Back, frame advance x2, back, FAx2, Down, FAx2, LP. - To perform the ever-popular uppercut, you need to advance 5 empty frames between inputting down and HP. Both inputs (D, HP) only need 1 frame to themselves. - To perform the sweep or roundhouse kicks, you need to hold back for one extra frame after inputting the move or it will not work. (B+HK, B) - To jump diagonally, you need to hold the direction for two consecutive frames or it will not work. Jumping straight up only takes one frame of input, though. - Each round will begin to register input exactly 48 frames after the last colored row of pixels disappears in the "FIGHT" text. You'll see what I mean if you frame-advance it.

Desyncs for me in the first fight. Round 1 is fine, but a few moves into round 2, and it falls apart. I'm using Nitsuja's WIP fix with VEHR off, by the way. What are your other sound settings? I may need to adjust mine.

I haven't touched it since the last update. I bought a PS2 right after Xmas and that's kept me pretty busy. Once I finish GTA3 (I'm on the last mission), I'll start on world 3.

This was my favorite game for the ol' FatBoy. I think a low-level speedrun could be interesting. Here are some ideas: - After fighting bosses, you'd gain a bunch of level-ups. I would only pick Power and Will for your stats, as Wisdom and Stamina are useless in a TAS. Yes, you do have to use magic a few times (Ice and Nuke), but choosing Will adds one to Wisdom and Ethers are plentiful. - Luck should be able to be abused to get enemies to drop items. During normal play, you get a chest half the time, anyway. Keys, Mattocks, and Ethers should never have to be bought. Some of the spell items (blizzard, frost, etc.) may be useful. - In the US version, the text scrolls slooooooooooowly. Even holding A or B to speed it up slightly is still slow. Maybe the Japanese version is faster in this aspect? - You may have to buy a weapon or two for boss fights. Like the Thunder Spear for Kraken and the Flame Flail for Kary. This could create a money issue, but some enemies drop sellable items (Gold, Opal, etc.) that can be abused. I don't know of any glitches yet. I think this game could be done in an hour or less. Thoughts?

I hear the Genesis version is a LOT better. If this game gets run at all, it should be the Genny. And yeah, it's wicked difficult. I bought the NES game used several years back and I couldn't get very far in it.

that's not even true, so few people use dialup these days, and having a 28.8 bit connection is ridiculous, if you must use dialup, at least go out and buy a 56k modem, seriously.
Dial-up speed depends on a lot more than your hardware. I have a 56k modem, and when I was on dial-up at my old apartment, I'd get 54k connections. Where I'm living now, 31k was the absolute maximum. Your distance from major relay points and quality of your house/apartment's wiring can greatly affect dial-up speed, as my own experience proves. The majority (as in, greater than 50%) of internet users in the US still use dial-up and probably will continue to do so for the next few years until cable/DSL companies can get their prices down further and provide service to more rural areas. My mom lives way the hell out in BFE, where if you want the internet you have no other option than dial up - the cable companies don't even have lines for TV out that way. On topic, the current system works fine. Don't fuck with it. I never watch the AVIs, but I'm going to start doing so once GBA movies start showing up - my old-ass PC can't handle the emulation.

Fascinating. I remember when I first got internet access in the fall of '99 (yeah, I'm always late to the party) my time online one month was something like 240+ hours. All I did was chat on AIM and download roms and shit. All day. All night.

My new apartment is too far away from the nearest line relay to get DSL, and cable is $45 a month. Fuck that, I'd have to quit my job and be online 12 hours a day to justify paying that.
Ironically, I now have cable. They advertised a really good introductory offer ($20/month for 6 months) and now I'll never be able to go back to dial-up. Words, eaten. Wallet after June, empty.
