After thinking about this for some time, I am quite certain that this run should not obsolete the U version. They are different games, or, more reasonably, this is a kludgy hack of the U version to make it work on different technology than it was developed for. I can go make another hack right now that triples mario's running speed, and a TAS of that hack might be really cool, since now you can do crazier jumps, but it would not obsolete the existing movie. As for what do with this submission, it would be a little sad to see it die. It is, in an annoying technical sense, the very fastest you can beat Super Mario Bros., where that name refers to some cartridge with that title published by Nintendo played on some hardware sold by Nintendo with some officially compatible television. I kind of like Mugg's suggestion in the submission comment that it be linked to from the U version page, if it is made very clear why it is faster. The main concern, I think, should be having new users find the best and most authentic run available first and most easily, and that is the U version.

I think that "Minimal Sword Use" is the best title for this category. That lets this submission through uncontroversially, AND makes sure that if anyone ever does come up with a way to kill Ganon without the sword, that run obsoletes this one directly and obviously, since it uses the sword less.

Voting yes while watching in another window. Maybe for the final encode it would be a good idea to add some text at the beginning saying "HEY! I GET THE SWORD AT THE END! TRY NOT TO GET TOO UPSET ABOUT IT" so that people don't feel like, ripped off or whatever? I don't really understand that position in the first place, but it seems easy enough to alleviate. btw, the mp4 encode crashed safari at the same point very early in the run (in the middle of I think the 4th or 5th screen?). This is very likely to be Safari's quicktime plugin's fault and not the encode's, though.

Your run is awesome! You should totally submit it. If nothing else, as people have said, there needs to be a run of this here for the music alone :) But that's a silly reason, your run definitely stands on its own. The boss fights are great, the whole thing looks smooth, and it's very short (a very positive quality in my opinion, especially in terms of getting new people interested).

This is exactly the kind of game I enjoy TASes of - probably too badly made and annoying for me to enjoy trying to actually play, but creative and interesting enough that I want to see all the content. And the glitchiness and damage boosting was also awesome.

Alrighty, voting yes, but it would be nice if you mentioned stuff like that in the submission comments so that it doesn't just look like you're being sloppy to those who don't understand the game. In fact, I think it would be a great idea to edit that stuff (and anything else interesting) into the comments, if that's possible?

The ROM worked fine for me. Before I vote though, can you explain a couple things? Maybe they were for luck manipulation or something? In the beginning of level 2, you turn around to kill a guy who seems to be going the other direction. In the last level, there is one ladder you go up too far and then climb back down a ways. Maybe it was because you had to jump too high though? The end boss was quite entertaining, though I don't quite understand why it had to be done that way - does he attack you more aggressively if you stand in front of him?

Given that full-on tutorials are in fact extremely time consuming to make, I love the streaming idea, and I think that recording any such sessions is even more important. Did anyone bother to capture adelikat's original stream? Even if there's minimal commentary, just watching an experienced TASer work would be extremely instructive/inspiring for a noob such as myself.

I have to agree, Mugg's is generally much more polished. And I eagerly await HappyLee's! However, mostly I'm posting to thank Antoids and everyone else who posts encodes of WIPs - I do a lot of my web browsing on my Mac laptop, and thus can't watch fm2s. It is much appreciated!

Ah, thanks! Always good to know the history. I'd known about this site for a couple years, but HappyLee's run was one of the (many) things that got me to start paying more serious attention to this site, so I'm not too familiar with things before then.

I made some TAS combos, and I want to know what people think of them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0loTqbq2ZS4&feature=channel_page http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2XiMu1hQew&feature=channel_page http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJhtB6zMvRY&feature=channel_page thanks in advance
It seems you haven't posted here since last June, but perhaps you still watch this thread from afar, so: These were excellent! There are two types of moment that really make them shine - A) when you get your characters fairly spaced apart and bounce the CPU around rapidly between them, and B) when two characters are beating up on the CPU in various ways and the third is off doing something seemingly irrelevant, only to end up in the perfect place at the perfect time as a result of his setup (e.g. ness in #3). I'd love to see some more!

I am a huge fan of novelty runs. HappyLee's SMB walkathon made me _so_ happy when it came out. Contrary to what Omega said, I think such runs will actually *broaden* the appeal of TASes - while plenty of normal runs are pretty amazing to the average viewer, there are many that pretty much just look like a guy running forward for a while unless you are a hardcore TASer and know how to spot all the optimizations, or read the submission text. With runs that have to do obviously amazing/clever/silly things to accomplish some goal, everyone can understand the work that went into it and appreciate the new perspective on the game, or humor value of the situations the runner gets into. It also leads to more "Wow, you can _do_ that!?!?" moments - it's obvious that every game has some optimal time to completion, but it's not obvious that every game can be beaten without one if it's primary controls, or with the most useless item equipped the whole time, or without collecting any powerups, or whatever. In fact, my very first attempt at a tool-assisted run was of this type - I just posted a run in the relevant thread of the first level of SMB3 in which I minimized the number of frames spent touching the ground or a normal platform. It's pretty sloppy, since I'm a n00b at this, but being able to do new things to the big famous games is a big incentive for me to learn at all.

I posted a new thread containing the following and was instructed to move it here: Hi all, I've been watching TASes for a long time, but this is the first time I've actually tried to make one. I wanted to give myself a fairly easy challenge that would still produce something entertaining to watch, so I made a run of the first level of SMB3 in which I attempt to minimize the number of frames I spend touching the ground or a normal platform, not counting frames during which I am still in the starting position. I managed it in 3; I really want 2 to be possible, and it might be, but I can't figure it out. You can find the .fm2 at www.techhouse.org/~jake/smb3lava.fm2. This being my first attempt at any kind of tool-assisted anything, it is pretty sloppy (though not in terms of the goal of the run). For some reason I don't press start or move to level 1 on the map screen very quickly; I forgot that I did that and started working on it, and then when I noticed i didn't want to redo it all just to make that better. It seems like it should be possible to fix, since no important state changes during the bad part, but I don't know how. The very end was incredibly frustrating; I tried being big there but it doesn't help. I also thought of trying to bring another shell, from one of the green koopas much earlier in the level, but I don't know if it's possible to pick one up without touching the ground, and even if you can, it would come back to life too soon and there's nowhere to drop it and pick it up again. I did this entirely on my own (I didn't even re-watch the mario 3 TAS before I started) so I don't use any fancy tricks or anything. If there's a glitch I don't know about that could save a frame of touching the ground, let me know! If people enjoy this, I might do more levels, or some other wacky challenge. Let me know what you think!
