I would argue that manipulating the RNG to get an exit tile as quickly as possible would be at least worth a low Moon.
In a game, yes. In a lottery, no. Imho. (edit) or, to put it differently, I don't see how it's a superplay to manipulate a single random event, i.e. the level layout. It's just a matter of going over all seed values once until you get the right one. By contrast, any other game I've seen that manipulates luck does so in game in the middle of doing everything else that is required to get through the levels.

I would prefer seeing this obsoleted by a version that completes all eight levels.

Hold it - site management has repealed their earlier ruling, and the "low%" run of this game is now accepted. That means there's also room for a "100%" run.

I don't see how this is a superplay.

Random Mode clearly isn't a game. It just fills the screen with random tiles, and in the unlikely chance that there happens to be an exit tile, you win. It's not TAS'ing that skips the gameplay, there just isn't any gameplay in the first place. That said, I do believe we should have some standards for self-published or unpublished games. They are basically the PC equivalent of romhacks on e.g. the SNES, and just as with romhacks there are a few great ones, amidst a sea of tens of thousands of shoddy messes hastily copy/pasted together. And let's be honest, if this were an SNES romhack, it would be rejected before you could even blink.

Well, since the workbench now contains about a hundred open entries, I went ahead and voted on about a dozen of them with a browser tabs... and this promptly triggered an automated ban on me. That was weird :)

I like this proposal. One question: how does this mesh with existing categories, in particular "not using a particular glitch" (e.g. Sonic's out-of-bounds level skipping)? I suppose the fastest with all glitches would qualify for the Vault, and a more visually pleasing one (that doesn't use the glitch) could be a Star, am I correct on this?

Theoretically speaking the only difference between a human and a machine is the speed. The pc is precise and way more fast while humans are not so you can basiclly say the same about all the movies in this site... they can "theoretically" be made by a human if he's fast and precise enough (pacifist runs for example).
The difference is that while all runs can theoretically be made by a human if he's fast enough, this particular run here can practically be made by a deft-handed human.

I was curious too, so I tried. Took me about 3 minutes to figure out what the "route" was, and 2 tries to successfully execute it. So the glitch itself is easy to pull off. I gave it about 5 emulator unassisted tries and my best was about 780 frames (about 100 frames slower than this submission).
Interesting. If the result is that easy to duplicate without TAS'ing, then that should qualify this run by default, no?

Voting no because of lack of entertainment value. I'm willing to make an exception for E.T. because it's such a well-known game, but that argument doesn't apply here.

Sure. People tend to upvote any game for a system they like, and downvote any game for a system they don't like. Neither is a strong argument.

I don't find this much of an argument considering how early-era MS-DOS games are routinely downvoted because of their (cga/ega) graphics and (speaker) sound.

Indeed! I would like to play it, but I can't figure out the Japanese site. I downloaded something but it doesn't seem to install (it shows some Japanese dialogs instead). Can someone tell me where to download this game?

I just rediscovered Fury of the Furries and thought it would make a very good TAS, particularly because of its physics. The furries can move really fast but are hard to control manually when they do; and one of them has a rope that he can attach to walls and swing from. It would be fun to see how a TAS handles that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vD80v5PZ-A (that's an Amiga video but the game also exists for DOS).

Huh? I was under the impression that this site had a whole category for pacifist runs.

Nice run... ...but mind explaining what's going on? Why are you suddenly in stage 3? Why are you suddenly at that pyramid? Is this a good ending or a bad ending? WTF?

Very nice work! The funny thing is, I was thinking of TAS'ing this game just last week, and now you've beat me to it. And yes, I think route planning makes for a valid TAS. Yes vote; we need more games from this era. Who's up for Alley Cat? :)

With the exception of frame perfection, the technical quality of this particular TAS is extremely low in my opinion because of this. A similar point was recently discussed in Post #323143 about the controversial rejection of #3667: mtvf1's GBA MegaMan Battle Chip Challenge "no code" in 2:41:48.80.
Fair enough, but that run is almost three hours, whereas this one takes twenty seconds. I think that the Megaman run is so long that it becomes repetitive, whereas this one is not. YMMV, of course.

Wow, that's an amazing romhack. I love the Sonic bonus levels :) That said, I'm not sure about this run. While it's surely fast, the old trick of using the cape to bypass entire levels is not all that entertaining to watch. So I'm leaning towards 'meh'.
