Just what I feared from 1.51 all the time. It's unknown in recording behavior due to not enough tests, and it seems to have more desync issues than 1.43+ with WIP1 timing. :-(

Cooldown values, whats this? EDIT: Seems like he meant the ones between shots. Although it's funny that moozooh really believes I wouldn't optimize such a easy thing like this to the absolute limit (big talk seems to be common in this days I guess), I should probably mention the facts I came down to, after carefully optimizing this simple fight for more than 3 days: It can't be improved by more than 3 frames. However I wouldn't be able to get Missile refills that way, so I had to sacrifice them. Other than that I shot him on the earliest possible frames all the time, so it's perfect. Feel free to prove me wrong. :-)

OMG, this is totally awesome! You are a genius, moozooh, thanks for finding the time doing it that quickly, man! Fabian: Reading helps sometimes. As you see, I very much wanted that moozooh does this skip, because I knew he could do it, but was too lazy trying it myself. I'm happy he saved me the hard work doing it myself. :-) EDIT: As a reward for this incredible work I will show you my Torizo fight from my older any% WIP, that is 30 frames faster than JXQ's 100% v2 one, to convince all disbelievers, and proof/confirm that my statements about it before were true: http://rapidshare.com/files/31800996/SM_-_Improved_Torizo_Fight.avi.html Just compare the frame count from the first movement of Samus after the item pickup screen, which is at frame 24782, till the last one before hitting the door exit-transition at 26141. It's a 1359 frame range, JXQ's v2 one is 1389.

Indeed shocking news. 0_0 But again, it just shows how crazy optimized inichis run is, even unassisted. I would still recommend to use the (U) version, no matter if it turns out to be slower. Not only will everybody understand the game much better while watching, you can also find out how much rough time difference between both runs by using different versions can be reached. We can pretty much consider inichis run as a half TAS, since as far as I know he got all battles pretty optimized and luck manipulated like in a TAS, and thus making a comparison to your run pretty well, despite being unassisted. If nobody didn't notice, seems like the japanese guys just PWN us badly in any game! Inichi, Hotarubi, catnap etc. I have much respect of such awesomely skilled, yet smart and creative people. :-)

Glad to hear you enjoy my hack, Naitsir. :-) Regarding your problem: What P.JBoy said. It's for sure one of the trickiest parts to pass, but since you already managed to pass the vertical room with the spikes, which located the first Super Missile Pack, I'm sure you won't get much trouble in that lake room as well. Just try different bomb jumping timings and face the right direction when going off the final bomb.

Looks great, evilchen! It's still not the top level (but already close to it), but it looks MUCH better than anything you did before, in quality. You see, experience and practise pays out. :-) I would also aim for smallest possible percentage if you already attempt the Kejardon-run, and thus I would definitely skip the Ice Beam. Good luck to find your way through the long pre X-Ray room. And regarding the death after the 1st save in Brinstar: I think you can't skip it in any case. You need it in order to copy your save file in the game-sram. IIRC Kej said you have to load that copy after saving in the last save station in Tourian, in order to allow Samus to skip Mother Brain at all.

Very entertaining TAS! From the new races I liked VL2 most in the Special Cup. Also very nice shortcuts in GV3 and RR. Once again, with good timing they can be used on console, which I never thought being possible the way you did them. This is of course a obvious YES vote from me, also because it's the first Super Mario Kart TAS ever, which is just a must to have in the TAS collection, being such a entertaining and classic racing game. Excellent job, Huffers!

That was pretty damned cool. Especially the Ken fight. I was wondering, would it be faster to start the "Break it!" stages with a Sonic Boom?
Thanks! There are also some other really well coming out fights, like the Chun Li one with the Flash Kick combo that saved me from a loss in first round for example. Ryu, Feilong or Sagat went also pretty successful IMO. About the "Break it" stages, a good idea, but I don't think it would save time. Sonic Boom does not as much damage like a hard hit there, and thus I still would have to hit the first part of the car/bricks with the same amount of hits to break them. Maybe using weaker but faster hits with the Sonic Boom combo would be a promising variation, but as far as I know, hard hits were always faster in this stages, even despite the slower animation scene.

Ok, the new version 1.5 is up now! It now contains, along the standard headered version, a headerless one as well, so you won't have problems to apply the patch having only the headerless ROM anymore. :) This version will definitely be the last one if no more bugs or glitches will be found. Check it!

Time to show some more stuff from my unassisted smv-archive: SSF2 - flawless Guile!!! Once again I managed to pass ALL 12 fights dominantly and clearly without a single loss! Guile (who also is one of my favourites) is the only fighter who has almost no cooldown after his shots (sonic booms), and this allows him to pull off some crazy hard-hit killer combos no other fighter is capable of. This combos got well executed plently of times in this run, and in rare cases allowed me to turn some apparently lost fights and still win them! A perfect Guile run, and a must see for SSF2 fans, or those who want to learn new tricks with Guile! Enjoy!

Wow, SMK-King duff is here. Welcome to TASvideos! About the 2nd controller suggestion: As long as the 2nd player isn't fully involved/used to drive in every race like in a 2-Player competition, but just there to let the 1st Player get a slight starting position advantage and nothing else, then I would strongly disagree to use it, as it would look just cheap and lame otherwise. It would not only look boring to see the 2nd player standing still in every race, but it would also destroy the originality of the SMK TAS. A standard "1-player aims for fastest time" TAS would be of much more value and it's racing records would be more recognized and stable as well.

I think I mentioned Phantoons exact acting patterns somewhere around a 3/4 year ago, but here again: Phantoon has straight patterns, but there are always like 4 different ones, and it gets decided which one to use from the very beginning already. The first set of patterns gets decided at the time you enter his room already, no matter what you do in the time before he appears the first time on screen. All the next ones get decided at the time you hit his eye. Sooner or later by 1 frame will already change his patterns. So yes, even if all his moves are fixed, they get still executed randomly depending on purely your acting. And since they all change in a unpredictable way during one single frame interval, there is basicly 0% chance for the player to force him to do exactly the pattern you wish without pure luck. I'm 99,9% sure that this patterns work same in both PAL and NTSC version, so it doesn't really matter which one you use.

But did you try turning off "sync sound"? Also, the same steps for getting rid of crackling in 1.43 on slow computers apply here (turn down the sound quality options then gradually increase the buffer length and mix interval until it stops). The system requirements for 1.51 are much higher (there were things that made emulation faster and less accurate that were turned off because it was felt the average computer nowadays can handle it).
Indeed, without Sync Sound the cracking is almost gone. Thank you for once again teaching me noob a lesson. :-) However I wonder, what does Sync Sound do actually? I always had it enabled in 1.43, so I worry if I turn it off, wouldn't it increase the chances of a desync in sound compared to the picture if I understand correctly? That would be a big disadvantage not using it then. :-( Would appreciate some information about it.

I think they're aware of that and are looking into it. I reported it before but it's hard to track down and the release had been delayed long enough already.
Thanks for clearing that up. Hopefully this gets fixed as soon as possible.

Actually, I sometimes noticed some crackling in the old version when I had a game movie going for long enough, so maybe it's not a new problem.
True, but it was very very small and almost not noticeable at lower sound loudness. In this one the cracking is MUCH louder (probably twice as loud as the sound itself) and very annoying for the ears to hear all the time. And Snes9x v1.43 never had loss of interpolation in sound as well. 1.51 had about 5-10 times during a 1:20 hour long movie. I used the windows version (in case it happens only on it). It sounds very sloppy and unstable that way, and I really want it to be fixed, since with such a bad sound emulation, I don't see myself switching over yet. But ONLY because of it. Everything else seems fine so far.

Also after watching moozooh's test run in Super Metroid recorded on this version, I noticed that the sound has always some crack/gnash noices especially noticeable through headphones. Also in rare cases it happened that the interpolation was gone for a short while, then returned back to normal, even though it was enabled all the time. After doing some test with AVI, I couldn't hear the same sound problems in it though. Seems like it's only emulation related. Did anybody noticed the same error as well? And if so, can it be fixed somehow? Otherwise v1.43 would be superior to this one in sound at least, as it never had this weird errors.

Would it be possible to make a converter from 1.43 to 1.51 ? Or the file are really that different so that it's impossible ?
It's most likely impossible. As said, it has a different timing, so even hex editing and matching the timing wouldn't help, as the luck routines of a game would be completely different because of that.

It worked for me with Snes9xv1.43 improvement9 and following sync settings enabled: - WIP1 timing - Fake Mute Desync Workaround - Sync Samples With Sound CPU If that still isn't helping, then maybe you use a different ROM version of Super Metroid? Otherwise I can't see a reason why this shouldn't be in sync.

New personal record for me again! Any% in 0:42 with 27% The tradition is continuing: Since 2005 (started with 0:44) I could improve my any% time by 1 min every new year. :-) This run is once again somewhat improved in skill-based techniques, and maybe slightly in boss fights. However it also has some flaws, like the need to repeat Zebetite skip trick 3 times in order to get it to work. But nevertheless it's a overall faster run to still hold 0:42 despite of that, and played with more knowledge and skill than the previous ones. Enjoy! PS: Only 10 min left till WR! Hotarubi, I come for you! :-P (joke)

Great news! Since v1.5x has different emulation timing compared to 1.43 (mostly longer in loading scenes), hex editing the input of 1.43 smv files into 1.5x ones won't work, I fear. I tried once and failed. Regarding this version, I really hope that it won't have any additional desync problems compared to 1.43 with WIP timing. If this version proves to be solid in that case, I think it should probably be used for further movies, since it also has some more features the older Snes9x didn't have (like load/save of watching memory adresses) that will make TASing more easy.

Incredible WIP indeed. Obviously and noticeably faster than anything we have seen around Super Metroid before (not counting my WIP), even when watching at 100% speed! Great Job on the typical moozooh-run, keep it up!

Damn, Huffers, I fear this won't work. Hex editing a completely different race into BC1 and then hoping that all luck will stay the same, especially after the many resets you did between the cups, I think the success rate is pretty close to 0%. :-( Good luck to try though, but even if it won't work, I hope you won't lose motivation to finish this TAS. As your very first one, it shouldn't be that bad if you have to let BC1 stay as it is, since as zodd already said, it isn't 100% optimized anyway, so it shouldn't matter that much for the 1st version. After gaining more knowledge you can still improve your own run anytime, especially if some other mistakes could be found, or maybe even new techniques geting discovered later.
